having a population increase of 2% w a cohort entirely of starving, unskilled refugees would shake the foundations of an economy tho????

and as bad as it wounds, china nuking NK would actually be the best thing for them since it would severely cut down on the refugees they would get flooded with

Gringostar posted:

an influx of refugees would probably be a net good for china actually. food is not something that they struggle with overmuch any more and the expectations of refugees from loving north korea of all places would be such that they would be eminently exploitable

like seriously give them a literal handful of protein a day and enough rice to bring them up to 2k calories and the refugees would be so mind-boggled by the relative feasts they're getting that they would willingly submit to having liters of blood drawn in dirty, factory-style phlebotomy tents (which chinese officials sometimes set up to get blood to sell on the black market), and after they are literally bled white they would not bat a single eye at a forced relocation to whatever factory, farm, or factory farm bid the highest to have a new indentured servant class.

since china's not hugely concerned about things like 'human rights' and has a very opaque government they'd be pretty uniquely positioned to just eat the refugee swarm wholesale and turn it into slave labor.

China could cover the country of North Korea to a depth of several feet, just by dropping soldiers on them.

Nah, they can actually do things. China wouldn't want them because language and cultural issues but they could probably be integrated into the modern economy relatively easily given the manufacturing base in China.

quote:

Last July, Shondel Church was arrested in Kansas City for allegedly stealing a generator and tool box from his stepmother.

He was charged with misdemeanor theft and transferred to the Lafayette County, Missouri, jail. Forty days went by before he met with an attorney. The public defender appointed to represent him told Church he had a winnable case, but as the only public defender in Lafayette County he was laboring under a crushing workload.

Church, who was married and had four children, faced a choice: He could languish in jail for another six months while his attorney tried to prepare his case for trial or he could plead guilty to a misdemeanor and possibly get out of jail sooner.

He opted for the plea deal, but in the meantime his attorney quit the public defender’s office. By the time, Church entered his guilty plea and was sentenced to two years of probation, he had spent five months in pretrial detention.

http://mediad.publicbroadcasting.net/p/kcur/files/aclu_missouri_petition.pdf?_ga=1.251286789.2017358696.1489076727

quote:

But the constitutional right to counsel is not merely the right to a warm body licensed to practice law at one’s side once trial begins. The right attaches well before trial, because “certain pretrial events may so prejudice the outcome of the defendant’s prosecution that, as a practical matter, the defendant must be represented at those events in order to enjoy genuinely effective assistance at trial.” Rothgery v. Gillespie Cty., Tex., 554 U.S. 191, 217 (2008). And the right encompasses more than “counsel in name only,” see State ex rel. Missouri Pub. Def. Comm’n v. Waters, 370 S.W.3d 592, 597 (Mo. 2012), because unless a lawyer provides meaningful assistance, “there has been a denial of Sixth Amendment rights that makes the adversary process itself presumptively unreliable.” Cronic, 466 U.S. at 659.

quote:

The lack of funding for MSPD has created an environment in which no public defender in this State can provide constitutionally adequate representation for all of their clients, including Plaintiffs.

The State of Missouri faces an urgent constitutional crisis. As demonstrated by the cases of each of the named Plaintiffs, that crisis will only worsen until MSPD attorneys are equipped with the tools and resources they need to provide indigent defendants with the level of representation to which they are constitutionally entitled.
