Turns out the crown Vic has a tow rating? Probably swinging me right there. Sorry my plea for suggestions caused trouble. That said, I see no issue at all with the CR-V. Except I can't find one in my price range (that anybody will respond to :argh:)

I have a Class II hitch on my P71. Mostly haul a HF 4 x 8 trailer, and it does that beautifully.

Yu-Gi-Ho! posted:

Don't even look at a Trooper, they're nowhere near as reliable as anything else you listed. You know the CRV decently (and a 2000 will still be the B20 you're used to), the LS400 is a tank.

On the Crown Vic, look for weeping coolant around the thermostat housing, and check the ECU for lean codes (and if possible, look at the fuel trims). I don't know if they'd fixed the intake manifold issues by then, but the intake is prone to cracking on the mod motors. When it cracks you get coolant seepage and start getting lean codes (and some crazy fuel trims). Dorman makes a good replacement manifold that addresses all of those issues.

Personally, I'd probably go for the Vic, simply because the domestic depreciation curve means you get a much newer car for the same money. And if you're looking at former law enforcement cars, if you can find out the history, a detective or highway patrol car will be the best bet.

I think by 2008 all of the CVs had the aluminum coolant crossover. If not, steal an intake from a P71.

Um, the "cop" wheels are the same as the civvie wheels, as far as I know. Just no full wheel covers. They do com in 16" and 17", but I believe a 2008 will have the 17"
That said, I didn't try to get tires for my 16" steelies, and it had larger-than-stock tires on it already. I put 18x8 Mustang wheels on mine, and a tire calculated to be within 2% of stock, because calibrated speedo.

I've never actually bought anything from a yard before so I'm completely ignorant in generally how it works.

Around here, either I show up and it's a wepull/fullservice yard and they quote me $xxxx for the part, or I show up and it's a selfserve yard, I grab what I need and pull a half dozen other things while I'm there, the guy at the register asks me why I'm there for the second time that week then quotes me $xx for all of it. I don't haggle at yards, so the yards with already decent prices where I buy an assload of stuff and never haggle just give me poo poo for a great price right off the bat. Half the time they don't even charge me the $2 admission and they waved me out for free with wiring pigtails in my hands twice last week.

Basically, once you find a good yard that's got not-dickhead employees, treat em well and you'll get the same. That one yard, Sandbagger and I got $480 worth of stuff (at list prices) for $130 once because the register guy recognized me and was too lazy to ring up the whole cart worth of parts, and I got my LM7 with literally everything bolted to it still (and the ECU, and harness, and torque converter, and part of the exhaust, and all the cooling system hoses and AC parts...) for $340 including tax. It should have been well over $500.

A combo of pissed off customers who got junk motors and an rear end in a top hat office drone who jumped on me for relaying the story to someone else.

One dude had a LS1 pulled by them. The cylinder wall in one of the cylinders had a hole in it and was cracked top to bottom. They sold it as a good motor, told the guy to piss off when he brought it back to complain.

Another time an older lady bought a northstar they claimed to have verified was working properly. It had a vvt accuator that was broken on half. They refused to do anything about it or return it. That solenoid was over $400.

3rd guy got a used 5.7 hemi and had a shop redo the gaskets in it and swap it for his blown motor. Both heads were warped from lkq. Guess what lkqs response was? If you guessed "Get hosed", YOU'RE RIGHT!

While I was relaying the second story to a coworker a day or two later, an lkq office drone was in buying poo poo for his boat. After I said I'd never buy a motor from there or source one for a customer from there or anything else if I can avoid it, he lit into me about how its not their fault that they can't check every little sensor issue. He promptly was informed that this was a 2" diameter chunk of metal AND WAS SHEARED IN loving HALF, and had it been tested like they claimed, they would have known there was an issue. So in short, they'll lie to your face about the condition of the motor, then tell you that you're out of luck when it turns out its poo poo, despite offering a "warranty". In 2 years I've sourced a single part from them, and that was only because the customer was a personal friend in desperate need and it was from the crystal river location.

gently caress the non u-pull lkq yards in the Tampa/St. Pete/Clearwater areas. The U-Pull ones seem to be decent about honoring their offered warranty if the part turns out to be scrap.

So I normally try to stick close to the speed limit, and/or go with traffic.

I was running really late getting back to the warehouse from a delivery. I hopped into a TEXpress lane (normally I do everything possible to avoid tolls, but when I got on, traffic was at a standstill)

Most TEXpress lanes here have a 75 MPH limit. I was doing a little over 80 (NOBODY in the express lane) when..

He never went after me... and when I looked at the dashcam video tonight to pull that clip, I noticed I had passed a 65 mph express lane speed limit sign. So... blew past doing 15 over. :downsgun: I could have sworn those were binoculars he was holding, but a LEO friend assures me they now make LIDAR units that look exactly like binoculars. I was positive I was about to get a ticket. I guess he was in a good mood; traffic on the actual highway had just started to get moving again, but I saw him looking right at me briefly. Thankful I didn't get a ticket, and I'm definitely slowing down a bit.

Junkyard run coming up this afternoon. A coworker's 2009 Malibu (with 320k, that's pretty drat impressive for an 09.. moreso for a Malibu) needs that little rubber boot that goes between the final intake resonator and throttle body. Hers is torn. The only way to get it from GM is to order the entire loving air intake assembly - from the airbox to the throttle body - for well over $200. I'm going to go looking for a new clutch pedal for my car as well - my clutch has gotten to where I have to shut off the engine when the car is stopped so I can get it into first, then start it when I need to move again. The rod from the pedal to the master cylinder no longer moves until the pedal is almost to the firewall. :argh:

I looked up the dishwasher (lowest end 2016 GE model) that my landlord put in. MSRP on it was less than $300, and I'm sure they have some bulk price setup since this company owns a ton of properties. And I suspect the one it replaced (lowest end mid 90s Hotpoint model, so pretty much the same thing, except the new one uses a little less power and water) ran about the same.

Personally, I'm glad they put in a low end one. I would have prefered the low db version (which my last apartment had installed - so much quieter, but essentially the same model with a bit more sound proofing), but if it breaks, it'll be easy to fix.

Like the insurance and the police told me - it can take a long time to work out what you are missing - think carefully. I still find the odd tool that I don't have anymore that I clearly forgot about when writing it up.

I had very low expectations about my house insurance but in the end they were brilliant and made me good without any issues! - and replaced absolutely everything that I lost with the same or similar item. In many cases I got a better item back as they replaced my generic tool with a sealey/clarke equivalent, or I got a kit or similar item back! Not even any argument for the stuff that I didn't have copies of any purchase invoices for.

My house insurance is with with legal and General (and i am planning on staying with them indefinitely after how good they were), and they simply farm out their tool replacement to buck and hickman who seem to supply most brands. Their selection of replacement items was spot on.

Hope you have a similar good experience

Now I want to look up security reviews of my garage doors when I get home.

If you have an electric door with the manual release string hanging down, at the very least remove the handle off the string, if not the string entirely. it takes less than a minute with a coat hanger to poke through the gap at the top of the door and grab that handle.

i am sure that if Dave racks his memory carefully, he'll remember that he had a 3,000 piece Snap-on toolset in that garage as well, it's just that he can't find the receipt for it.

adding up the cost of the missing poo poo can be depressing, even when entirely honest. you don't realize you spend $5000 a year on tools until a year's worth of tools gets stolen.
