Yeah the three quests sorta don't mesh well along with the last friend event ones. I wish they changed a bit more story-wise than with just after-text messages so things don't just come out of nowhere. On my first run I did the Bea and Angus events so when the miner ghost guy gets crossbowned by Gregg I was confused at first if he was like shot by a nearby hunter before the camera pans over. It was still pretty rad though because Gregg rulz ok

I can help
I know that they had to cut the animated mini-shorts to focus on finishing and delivering the core game. These were different than the two mini-games that preceded the main game.

I think we only got the Spring (part 1) "Gregg and Angus" short.

They did mention on an update that Scott will be able to finish this post-release and make them more substantial, so maybe they are coming as extra (free?) DLC?
The original plan was that there would be 4 of those in total, that would eventually be edited together into a teaser short that would have been released publicly before the game's official release; this would tell the story of an important past event (a few years before the game proper starts).
I think this probably refers to Mae attacking that kid?

But, I also see that there was supposed to be a "A super-secret prologue to Night In The Woods" supplemental-game for backers of a higher tier* (100$+) than mine. Was that done and did anyone get to play that?

*: huh, I either failed to notice this backer exclusive playable content, or maybe they said it would be timed-exclusive(?), because I backed the game anyway. It's more likely that I was very impressed by their trailer and was very interested to see the game implemented, that I overlooked that. Because I won't typically back projects that go for this short of thing.

Same but for Astral Alley

Also an interesting thing is that the next dream song is Astral Coal Train, kind of the left-over spirit of the industry that once powered the town. I wonder if there's other references to the coal train in the game. I remember there were a lot of mine carts and stuff in the woods before poo poo went down with the cult.
Edit: I can't read. Its Astral Coal town whups

I think I figured it out. Most of it anyway. This includes information revealed in Longest Night, so I'll spoiler tag.

If you played Longest Night, you may recall the constellation Ibon, the first singer. Depicted in the attic of the historical society, Ibon is a goat. Since it's a constellation, it's mostly black. According to the myth, Ibon wanted to teach the fish to sing. For this reason, Ibon took away the water.
At the park with Angus, he and Mae mention fossils of sea creatures found on land. Angus explains that long ago the entire area was underwater. It's mentioned elsewhere that Possum Springs is located in a valley so it's plausible that the area could've once been an ancient lake.
I'm not yet certain what Ibon is/was but if Ibon is/was a celestial body that fell to Earth and produced a big hole, that's probably where the water went. Air currents across and into(possibly out of) the hole would produce a sound not entirely unlike singing, which is mentioned several times throughout the game.

The parts I haven't figured out:
- The origin of the myths (I have little beyond speculation)
- The significance of the Janitor
- The dream animals
- Ibon's nature and relation to other constellations

I'm considering going through again, this time through a lens of Carl Sagan/Joseph Campbell.

To be fair, I'm familiar with the western PA/Western NY rust belt that is mirrored in the game and we have tourist-trap-like areas that are about geology and lay out the "This used to be ocean crust" sort of stuff.

Not that it couldn't be thematically important, but it could also just be a weird reference to some memory taught about the region.

I really wish you unlocked a chapter select after you beat the game as I wanted to get a good wallpaper of the bike ride with Mae & Gregg

Are you able to do the fourth friend event if you go Angus first? I went Bea and Gregg first and did their events immediately afterwards on my first two runs and always did Angus second. I did find out you get a bit more dialogue with Angus beforehand if you went the Gregg route.

Yep, I did Angus first in my second run and you still get the fourth friend event the next day.

Just a quick nonspoiler answer will be fine:

Is the only choice you have to make whether to hang out with Gregg or Bea? Meaning, you can see absolutely everything by playing the game twice because all the other characters you can hang out with don't lock you out of the Two Main Paths?

They have a complete playthrough of Bea's route, but I don't know if there's anywhere to just see Gregg's events without commentary. Honestly, though, just playing through the game a second time isn't a terrible idea--even a completionist run goes pretty quick once you know where everything is, and redoing the parts you've seen before isn't too bad if you do it one or two days at a time.

Other than maybe unlocking extra dialog, the fourth friend hangout has nothing to do with any of the ghost hunts. It just takes place between the first and second of them. So if you split up the first three friend hangouts, you just get whoever you hung out with twice for the fourth.

I noticed something odd. If you don't choose some dialogue options, the game still acts like you did. For instance, you can tell the rude neighbor that you're the new Mayor and your dad will call you Mayor later that night. If you choose the other option, your dad STILL calls you Mayor. The same thing happens with the (unavoidable, fyi; someone was asking about that earlier) fight with Mom. She quotes you saying college wasn't where you needed to be, even if you didn't choose that option.

Is Mae forgetting what she actually said? She forgot Bea's mom died for chrissakes. What if there's a true route through the game? I'd hope not ALL dialogue choices have a "correct" option in that case.
On that subject, has anyone datamined the game yet to see if there's secret stuff?

I think Bea's mom died off when Mae left for college so she wouldn't have known. I know some dataminers did find some unused cutscenes and a Germ friendship event they took out for explaining too much (we know it was originally going to be added due to his achievement talking about the trampoline)

IIrc the mom thing happened during Mae and Bea's senior year, when neither of them were talking to each other. So Mae could have just never heard about it, but she still knows they live in an apartment now instead of their house so who knows what the sequence of events are on her forgetting Bea's mom died.

She was also kind of a mess at that time so her memory is probably pretty foggy.

I hand-waved the first example as being either (A)something she was known for saying as a kid or (B)an example of Mae and her dad having similar senses of humor. The second example can be explained away as paraphrasing.

My first time through I had a lingering doubt for most of the game regarding whether or not the school burned down.

aaaaahhhhhhh loving same, I'm playing a second time to do Bea's story since the first time I went with Gregg, and over the last few hours got a handful of what would've been awesome wallpapers, but since I hardly ever take screenshots I didn't know you had to manually go into your steam settings and choose to save an uncompressed copy so they're all super poo poo quality and I threw them away

like really, it's cool, games are 6000 gigs now, I can handle default saving pics that are over 103 kb :/

anyway, don't be like me: steam > settings > in-game > "save an uncompressed copy"

It really says a lot that this game came out right in the middle of Yakuza 0 and Horizon consuming my soul and if hard pressed to pick a favorite, I'd legitimately call all three of them equally good. This is one of those rare "20 dollar indie games" where you should absolutely pay full price and not be a cheapass, there's a ton of content for a game of this type and the writing is fantastic. My wife is 22 and I'm 41 and we both really identify with the characters, it's crazy. Like when Germ started talking about "hanging out with Crusties" I was all "oh man yeah I remember the mid-00s".
