Ovechkin is also playing 2 minutes less a night as a result of both an intentional strategy to try to save him for the postseason more than in years past and because the team needs him less than it ever has with solid contributions from the other lines, especially the third.

is designing a bigger net harder than adjusting goalie equipment? because it's going to take them until next season, at earliest, to complete a change in goaltending equipment that was supposed to be accomplished this summer. according to the nhl, there's too much goalie, not enough net to shoot at. goalies are already bitching about the new pants being less protective, imagine how butthurt they'll be over new chest protectors (and having to wear smaller jerseys but those don't protect anything except their sv%) so hey, let them keep their protection, just use it to keep pucks out of a bigger net then.

The Pens could actually catch Washington which wasn't something I would have expected a few weeks ago. That would be nice because gently caress playing Washington or Columbus in the first round. An even more comedic possibility is Columbus winning the division and Wsh/Pitt being a first round series which would show what a complete travesty this playoff format is.

Flames jump to 2nd in the pacific with 9 wins in a row. what a wacky world. Oilers down to the wildcard, but with a game in hand could and only 1 point down could leapfrog back to second putting the battle of alberta back into round 1. With 15 games left, they could go 9-3-3 for their first 100 point season since gretsky. Just need a couple 6 million dollar players to wake the gently caress up.

Gardiner got the assist while on the bench too, Willie really likes to drag the puck around. Matthews is going through probably his worst stretch of the year and I'm worried he's finally hit the wall instead of this just being a typical slump. Luckily cool heads are prevailing right now, but if the Leafs miss I shudder to think of the takes. It's to be expected though, he's never played a schedule even close to this before.

I'm amazed at what a logjam the battle for the Metro crown has become. Again. Washington was gone not even a week ago, but Pittsburgh is closing with a chunk of their NHL roster dead (because they're the Pens) and Columbus is within striking distance with a largely favorable schedule they've handled mostly as they should to this point the rest of the season. I think the only "hard" games Columbus has left are one each against Washington, Pittsburgh, and Chicago. e- Remaining CBJ schedule (slash indicates back-to-back): @PHI, FLA, @NYI/@NJD, TOR/@WSH, PHI, BUF, @CAR/@CHI, WSH, @PIT, WPG, @PHI/@TOR. Four games against current playoff locks (WSH x2, PIT, CHI), six playoff bubble team games (PHIx3, TORx2, NYI), and the rest ranging from out of it to Bad (WPG, NJD, BUF, CAR, FLA), though Buffalo gave them fits the last two nights. Worth noting that as a Habs fan I wasn't paying attention to it at this point and was instead under my desk with a collection of strong alcohol. It's not just the Metro though. In the Pacific you've got that delicious potential Battle of Alberta first round meeting. In the Atlantic you've got a musical chairs with 5 contestants and only 3 or 4 spots. In the Central there's the "can the Blackhawks reel in the Wild?". Then there's all the wildcard spots (although that's definitely more of an Eastern conference thing... lol Iginla got traded to a team that's probably not even making the playoffs this year). Then there's all the player storylines. This year is pretty batshit.

Many of those fun stories I might have paid attention to in other years have been lost on me because I've been too fixated on "Columbus will probably clinch a playoff spot before April". On that note, how far away are the top three in the Metro from clinching? All three are north of 90 points and it has to be in the next couple weeks, right?
