The 2014 Suns and the 2008 Warriors with their 48-34 records might have a thing or two to say about that. The Suns that year would've been tied for third seed in the east but were number 9 in the west and the Warriors also would've had home court in the first round if they were in the east. Not that those teams had realistic chances of going far even if they'd gotten in, but they were absolutely robbed of playoff spots precisely because of how the NBA is structured. To make the NBA playoffs more mathematically pleasing they should do the following: 1. Add two expansion teams to get to 32 and keep the current number of playoff teams, so exactly half the teams get in. 2. Remove the conferences for the purposes of playoff seeding. 1 plays against 16, 2 against 15, etc. There are logistical barriers here, but it would be the most fair system by far, and would have the greatest chance of making the finals as competitive as possible. Ultimately it doesn't really matter because basketball is a fairly predictable sport where the best team wins the vast majority of the time. The team with the better regular season record wins their playoff series almost 80% of the time (part of which is precisely because of home court advantage, mind you).
