I've been hearing rumblings that Crunchyroll is decreasing quality? Got pointed to http://diff.pics/Tb0D8sX0IXXX/1 but it's the internet. I'd rather not trust it at face value considering the possibilities. If it's true, it kinda sucks cause I'd feel weird giving them money and such when they're not putting out the same quality for the same price.

I can't tell the difference between those diff pics. But yea Crunchyroll 1080p has always had issues. I've been watching it in 720p.

it's true that they're decreasing bitrate on their streams. it's up to you to decide whether this is a qualitative downgrade for you, or if its a small change that just barely impacts 1080p if you're two feet away from your screen and watch the pixels instead of the actual show with the characters and the voices and the moving. i'm a sane person so i don't notice an effective difference and yeah, it's not like 1080p is being dropped from a pedestal. the bitrate was never good enough to remain crisp during fast, dynamic scenes

yeah i read the reddit post that collected a bunch of examples and some were significant while others were so imperceptible i wondered if they were kidding. though i assume most tv anime is still upscaled to 1080p so there's no point in streaming or downloading anything at that resolution that isn't a bdrip/source. i feel like the bigger problem is that both the site and apps are regularly down for me on weekends.

Any kind of constant bit rate video like what Crunchyroll uses is gonna have some scenes where the compression isn't noticeable at all and others where it's REALLY noticeable. Doubly so because it's anime, which can compress way more before you get noticeable issues than regular video. It sucks but I can see why someone at CR made that choice. I'd love it if CR spent more money and we got really really good image quality but that's probably not happening anytime soon. The real solution would be variable bit rates, where action scenes are sent at a higher bit rate from scenes that can be compressed more, but since Crunchyroll can't buffer ahead more than like 30 seconds that would probably screw poo poo up.
