I had similar results with that mission when i first did it. After a complete campaign restart and did it again I realised its better to never turn around and just keep hounding the inquisitors ship since if it goes too far foward it means the chaos ships focus fire it to death. Also second time through i was much more skilled at ramming so everything ended up dying a lot faster.

It is, and there are several clues that the game was made primarily in French, before being translated to English. The translation's a good 'un, no mistake, but they do slip up a little- the most egregious is the 'High Energy Turn' which is what 'Come to New Heading' is known as in the regular English version.

I thought high-energy turn was on purpose, but I was probably in Star Trek mode.

To be fair, "High Energy Turn" sounds a lot more bad-rear end than "Come to New Heading".

I would also like to suggest the Starkly Coruscant, captain Kimball Kinnison, for a dedicated Lance ship.

We take revenge on the Orks, fight the Eldar, and then the 12th Black Crusade officially begins.

You won that Breakthrough mission because a battle with that amount of points means that the Attacker needs to destroy the defensive platforms and reach the edge of the map with two line ships. By killing all but one, it was impossible for the Orks to complete the ultimate objective.
Also you can set up your ships (and escort) auto-cast orders, skills and AI behaviours while in Port Maw by tweaking the Settings of each ship.

edit:
that was some instant karma with those Eldar :v:

I did that a few episodes back but I guess it unset the presets or I forgot to do it for the Taciturn Cogitator and His Divine Overcompensation. And thanks for clarifying on the Breakthrough mission, though I'm still bitter that I didn't get the chance to kill that last Ork ship for sweet sweet renown.

Honestly, if you're doing one of those data missions, it might be best to deactivate boarding autocast and keep your ships close together. That way, if you lose the data, you should have a much easier time getting it back.

Yup, Data Recovery missions are ones where you absolutely want to 100% control when a ship performs a boarding action.
That said the Eldar AI played pretty well by sending the lighter line ships as distractions and then having the flagship sneak in, grab the data and boost away.

In fairness, the Eldar were pretty weak but that's because they specialize in the one thing that lets them excel at this specific mission type.

It's because those missions do stack the deck against you somewhat since losing the artefacts is what happened in the canonical 12th crusade.

The other thing to remember is holofields don't block lightning strikes. So, against Eldar you can, providing you have range, always steal back the data.

Herp mocking the Eldar then getting punked by them was beautiful though.
