Mercury Ballistic posted:Any reviews in here on how their 5x responded to 7.1? I have the update taunting me but after getting burned on an older tablet I thought I would wait a bit. Bricked mine about a week after installation. Contacted Fi, they told me I could either pay my deductible or send it to LG. I opted to send it to LG (mid-Dec) because at the time they were doing refunds for the bootloop issue. By the time they got it they changed their policy and it sat in a TX facility for three weeks getting a new mainboard. It is currently being sent back to me (expect it tomorrow/Sat) - fixed at no charge. In the interim, Fi admitted that they should have replaced it with no deductible cost when I first contacted them, but since I didn't have the phone in hand there was nothing they could do (cross-shipping requires the original device back in 7 days, no exceptions, and if it doesn't get to them in 7 days they charge you the full price for the phone). So I was without a phone for almost a month, but didn't have to pay anything. We'll see if it holds up once I get it back and start using it.

Yuck, that's awful. I have also had some miscommunication with Fi support, and I've had to keep calling them and sending emails back to make sure they would do what they said. One time I had the rep say on the phone that they would replace my phone under warranty (buzzy earpiece speaker) but when she sent the follow-up email it said "your $70 deductible will be charged to payment method on file". So I email back and it turns out the rep was supposed to delete that part of the text before sending it off to me. And while that's one of the most Rube Goldberg explanations I've ever heard for an error, after mailing back and forth another time or two I finally got it squared away.

We only made one call (20 cents a minute) but the data and texts worked with no issues at all. FYI if you have cell data/wifi you can use the Google Hangouts dialer and pay much lower rates by making calls over VOIP. If you do a normal Hangouts call (as in, both people have it), the call quality is insanely good. That's what my girlfriend does when she goes to Canada with my data-only SIM. It doesn't use all that much data, either.

Anything else? withoutclass posted:Turn on airplane mode. Turn on wifi. Okay, I've been doing this ever since and here's what's been happening: - I've had to keep Gmail open in one tab on my PC so I can hear notifications of SMS or phone calls, because my phone often doesn't do anything then I later find I have a missed call/text/VM - When a call comes in, I often have to unlock my screen before it starts ringing - Sometimes I'll answer a wifi call and it immediately drops - Often I'll try making calls and they will fail to connect. Rebooting the phone usually fixes this - Today I rebooted my phone after failing to connect a call. Later I received a call and my phone did nothing even after I woke it up. Before I go to Google support, does anyone have any ideas about this? It's pretty frustrating when I'm trying to work from home.

Did a recent update on the 5X screw up the camera app for anyone else? The way mine used to work was, if I had the stock camera app open in total darkness and I tapped on the screen, the flash would come on for a moment and the phone would focus. Then I would hit the shutter button and the flash would go off and I'd get a nice in-focus picture. What happens now is, I tap the screen and it looks like it is trying to focus in darkness, and then when I tap the shutter button it pops the flash and takes a lovely blurry photo. This isn't a flash setting issue, as I've tried it multiple times both on auto-flash and always-on-flash. And I can't seem to find any setting in the camera app that controls this. It isn't the biggest deal, since I can still take legible photos for my purposes (a reminder photo of the car odometer that I can copy numbers from later, onto my required paper copy for work). But it sure is annoying to have a perfectly good bit of device functionality taken away with no warning or reason given

I think, but can't confirm on my end, that if you have a "home" location saved in Google Maps or whatever, it gets added as your default trusted location.

Don't know why I feel the need to post this: I've been using my fi sim in my iPhone and it works great. I don't get the advantage of switching networks as far as I can tell, but otherwise I have had no issues besides having to set the apn to h2g2. I only got fi to remote work in Europe while I was there over the holidays, so I didn't have to deal with getting a SIM card while over there, and it worked great. I sometimes had to force it to switch carriers to get the fastest speeds, as it often worked on 2-3 carriers but defaulted to using the slower one in both Germany and France. Other then $100 bill it was a great trip and afterwards I've switched over to using my google fi sim full time. The only other thing I miss is wifi calling but I can always use the hangouts iOS app to force a data call.

OP of this thread doesn't look terribly updated and scrolling through 3 pages of the thread seem to be focused on 5X problems. I've got 2 lines on 6 GB t-mobile, $112 a month. My wife and I have only been using <4 gigs a month combined and our phones are over 2 years old. Fi with 5" pixels seems like a no-brainer because our lack of data usage becomes subsidy towards the new phones. With $5 protection plans this comes to $155 base - $10 for every gig not used, plus $20 off the first bill with referal. Am I missing some totally obvious downside to switching? Is there some glaring problem that would make me stop and think about staying on t-mobile and buying new (cheaper) phones outright? Is my wife going to kick my rear end about something 5 months down the road because I "didn't know this was going to happen"?

Fi does get you Sprint coverage as well and faster international data, but that's about it? T-Mobile does offer $325 in bill credits over 24 months for each Pixel you have for postpaid customers. Probably going to ditch Fi soon. It's got a good features set, but with my corporate discount I can get 2 unlimited lines at tmo for $100 and my wife can get an iphone and stop bitching about her 5x selfie camera. I'm a little surprised they haven't tried to push down their data rates considering the phones they offer are supposed to sync with the cloud for everything.

Maneki Neko posted:Are you pre or post paid? Woah, that's a good deal for the bill credits, how do I get that added to my plan if I go into a T-Mobile store? Is it some special promo I need to mention? The other side of this is that Fi with low data usage can be $130 a month with the phones included, but I have to constantly watch data. TMobile would be closer to $150 before the credits but unlimited data is nice. The credits you mention would equal one free pixel though so that would push it over the top.
