Nothing surprising about this at all. Just proves that there's no point in having a loving primary at all if the centrists are just going to have a tantrum when they lose.

We didn't.

That's correct. Europe has always found it inconceivable to allow a predominantly Muslim nation to join. Especially one they have a nasty history with.

Not that any of that matters now. EU is going down the shitter. Turkey joining the EU now would be like catching a falling knife.

Our history with Germany is wayyyy nastier than our history with Turkey.

Is this the comic Fillon had to apologise for? I read about in the papers yesterday but they (somewhat sensibly) chose not to publish the image itself.

Yup, that's the one. L'Express had the caricature in their article, as well as "antisemitic" in quotes, which is a bit classless (but understandable considering Macron isn't actually Jewish.)

Let's look at the other side of the Atlantic. What are American conservatives saying? Quote Patrick Buchanan:

quote:

Le Pen, the anti-EU populist who would lift sanctions on Putin’s Russia, is running even with 39-year-old Emmanuel Macron, a socialist running as the independent leader of a new movement.

Valls is saying that he won't endorse Hamon, which is merely petty obstructionism and not blatant sabotage as endorsing Macron would be (I should've thought that prank news was weird because of that, really...)

This is still a good reaction to most of what Manuel Valls says or does:

Turkey was never going to be allowed into the EU, it was nothing more than a show off when it started because there have always been veto threats over it, only when it became uncomfortable even supporting the (unrealistic) idea of them joining the eu did the support end.

Also, is France trying really hard to get le pen elected? why the gently caress is someone being indicted even running for president? are they trying to do a hillary clinton but worse?

Upon being hauled in front of the judges, Fillon refused to be interrogated and insisted on just reading out a prepared statement saying "I didn't do it nobody saw me do it you can't prove nuffin".***

None, he already went back on this promise some time ago. He justified this by saying "I'm the one who can make France great again, so only the french voters can tell me when to stop". After poking fun of Sarkozy being indicted, and his now famous quote "Can you even imagine General De Gaulle being indicted?".

That said, I don't believe he ever planned to pull back from the race. He just wanted to keep the "good candidate" pretense for a bit longer, until it's to late to replace him. There's been an attempt to replace him with Juppé, with Sarkozy pulling strings from the shadows. But it went to smoke when Juppé told Sarkozy to gently caress off because his support would only come if Juppé gave the prime minister and head of party jobs to Sarkozy's henchmen. This made for delicious drama because lots of people had already jumped off the Fillon ship, then came back when it turned out Fillon was staying captain even if it meant a sinking ship. It sure is more important to hold on the deputy seat than to show any moral or political consistency.
