If you can leave what happens at work, at work, then there are so many cool opportunities to make friends and have a great time in Korea. Also it's a prime location for jumping off to other locations in Asian. My wife and I are expecting, and thus will have to put our plans on hold for a year or two, but we can't wait to go back to Korea and see how our old haunts have changed. My wife and I are expecting, and thus will have to put our plans on hold for a year or two, but we can't wait to go back to Korea and see how our old haunts have changed. I think a lot of the anecdotes in this thread speak for themselves, but they are just anecdotes. If you go back to my posts in one of the long archived Korea threads, the one thing I usually said to people coming over (aside from: "don't") is that Korea is impossible to recommend because the conditions are different for every person that comes over. You could have an amazing school, a lovely school, a great apartment, a lovely apartment, get on well with the locals, or be a total pariah. It might be your fault, or you may have just inherited a lovely situation because the guy you replaced soured everything. The other issue and where I argued with some of the people in Korea at the time is that work makes up such a huge chunk of life that it can be tough to compartmentalize it, especially if you had a commute like mine that affected the whole rest of the day, from when you had to get up to when you had to be in bed. I may have lived in Dongducheon, but I worked in the last village in Yeoncheon county. It was misery. It's a great jumping off point I agree, but there's a reason why the people in Bangkok and Taipei I've met who did time in Korea discuss it like veterans talk about tours of duty. I have nothing but glowing things to say about Cambodia and Japan, but I've only ever been there as a tourist. Maybe I'd feel the same about Korea if I had only ever visited. Of course, I'm older, wiser, and a bit more world-weary these days, so maybe if Korea is where I went second or third instead of first I would have felt differently about it. I just received an email from my dad though. "After spending an afternoon on layover in Seoul, I have to say that your [drunken, sexist] Korean friend is the nicest Korean I've ever met."

Why is there no GBS Korea thread? It seems more people went there and Japan than ever went to China. Also, the Japan thread sucks and has people very comfortable with anime.

Haier posted:Why is there no GBS Korea thread? It seems more people went there and Japan than ever went to China. Also, the Japan thread sucks and has people very comfortable with anime. The Female Rasputin thread is basically the default GBS Korea thread, though obviously it's ultimately focused on the presidential impeachment at the moment. But at the end of the day, there just isn't enough insane news that comes out of Korea to really keep the momentum going. In that sense, it's a pretty humdrum modern nation with corrupt politicians and corporate executives, but the government is functional enough to depose and charge them. I think this thread works fine as the catchall "insane stories from Asia" thread even if the primary focus is on China. ladron posted:lol and pretty much. like there is one women who post(ed) in the korea thread about how great it was and how much of a good time she was having all the time, but she was an unemployed military spouse who lived in a free "Lotte Castle" apartment, got awesome american food off base all the time, and would just do tourist poo poo like making kimchi classes. she would refuse to even consider her experience might be different from the norm...meantime, I have day-drinking middle aged men yelling at me on the subway because I am talking to a (female) former student that I happened to see... I'm glad I went to Korea, it's where I met my future wife and mother of my son, but saying that I kind of feel like those guys in Starship Troopers saying that the Mobile Infantry made them the men they are today, complete with missing eyes and limbs.

runny eggs had me flashing back so im retelling a story here but it entertained me: a while ago i was on vacation in england and staying at some guest houses. since the key to tripadvisor reviews is a robust breakfast buffet, these places would go all-out and have a bunch of condiments/juices/yogurts/whatever to go with the breakfast foods. At one place I saw a big bottle of soy sauce, so I asked the owner of the guest house "Soy sauce for breakfast, is that for the Chinese guests?" He laughed and confirmed it was was for them, since the only food Chinese guests would eat were: Fried eggs with soy sauce or Scrambled eggs with ketchup or Porridge (though english porridge not as satisfying as rice porridge) or Fruit it's England, have some cumberland sausage and baked beans you babies

Also in the no male Korean friends department. One of my friends has a husband who is cool and pleasant enough but we're not really friends, that's the closest I have. For me I couldn't deal with how they treated their girlfriends. Invariably they'd seem cool and we'd have a good time but eventually I'd see them interacting with women and not want to be around people like that anymore. I agree Korea isn't interesting enough for its own thread. It's the midwest of Asia. Very nice place to live if you don't have a Korean job or have one of the rare good bosses.

Just chiming in to say lol at the idea of someone who won't like Korean food because they were raised on white bread and mayo. I mean sure, Korean cuisine like kimbap and barbecue is out of the question, but this is also a country where you can buy sweet potato and mayo pizza, or a pogo with sugar on it.

You are probably used to your local strain, which is why you can eat McD's in America with cow bowels minced into it. After a while in any particular Asian region, your stomach will adjust, and things that would have given you terrible shits when you arrived are just processed normally. Dheli Belly is temporary. Uh, I buy most of my meat at Walmart, and there's nothing local about it. I'm not sure if it's even Canadian, much less 'local'. Wasn't there some talk a couple years ago about shipping dead chickens to China for cheap processing, and then shipping the meat back to the US? A glorious melange of E. coli strains.

I'm a very picky eater myself but I think it's down to texture of the food more than anything. The only food I really dislike the actual taste of is seafood, because most of it just leaves a horrid aftertaste in my mouth, even if it tastes nice initially. My tastebuds are supremely hosed up. The reason there isn't a Korea thread is that for some reason Korea attracts a lot of low quality posters proportionally. It's hard to say exactly what it is but like all the people who got a bio degree and are going to do exactly one year abroad before returning to Canada to try to make Youtube videos for a living go to Korea. So not only is the country kind of generic a lot of the expats there are too.

A few years ago at work, we had a visiting specialist from, unsurprisingly, China who tried to pull that poo poo. However, all our elevators have buttons on both sides of the door. So you could still press your floor's button while he just stood there like an idiot, glaring at you. He never stopped doing it the entire time he was here either. He'd press his button then practically hump the control panel while everyone just shrugged and used the other one. Best moment was when the two of us were having an argument while waiting for an elevator. Because it arrived first, I got into the freight lift which no one else at my work ever seems to want to use. He walks in, spies that there's only one set of buttons on either side of the doors and plants himself in the corner in front of the buttons to stop me pressing them and starts back up with whatever stupid poo poo he was saying. So I walk over to the other doors and press the open button there and, completely ignoring him, proceed to walk out into the corridor to the warehouse area while he stood there, refusing to move.

Considering they are usually only 1st generation rich and the little emperor has no education, I cant imagine very long. I think I posted this scenario before, but this is how I imagined it going on for your typical "smash and grab" Chinese family moving to Vancouver. The family manages to get $20 million dollars CDN out of China on top of the money they already spent to buy their $3-4 million dollar Vancouver mansion (2,500 square feet home) as well as a 1.5 million dollar apartment/condo. They have a single male son who is 19 and is going to start his BA at some West coast university. The wife doesn't work, and the husband has cut his ties with China and any hope of making additional money because he can't risk going back and getting caught for fraud. $15,000 a year in Property taxes $20,000 a year in Home/Apartment Insurance $15,000 a year in Auto insurance $25,000 a year in Tuition/School expenses (for 4-5 years) which then turns into $100,000 a year to support their son who never gets a job. $10,000 a year in random municipal and building fees $10,000 a year in food $200,000 a year in luxury products and trips $80,000 a year in new car expenses (assuming one of their three cars is being replaced each year) $10,000 a year gold/country club membership $10,000 on whores +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ~$275,000 a year. (spending any less, or living a less extravagant lifestyle would mean losing much face) They have about 50-60 years of living like absolute useless pigs without any manner of income before they would have to sell off a property and buy themselves another 10 years or so of worry-free living. Having a son that actually gets a job and manages to support himself would move them from that 50-60 years to 60-70 years. Now families who try and do the same without a 20 million dollar pillow are going to find that they're running out of money much faster because they still have to maintain that façade lifestyle. For the super-rich, their kids are likely never going to have to work a day in their lives, or worry about the money taps turning off, but for the ones that were not lucky enough to have parents packing 20 million plus, they're likely going to have to roll up their sleeves or tighten their belts. This is all assuming that they don't go broke instantly due to a criminal/civil suit resulting from one of them running over someone with their car.
