Now the internet just makes it even easier.

And here is where we converge back to the thread topic: Holy gently caress the modern internet makes everything easier than it was in the 90s.

If I want some obscure anime? I can torrent it at whatever quality I want from whatever torrent site, and I can pick between releases from different subtitle groups. Before, I ask around whatever nerd circles I could find, and hope for the best, which is usually a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of an already lousy VHS tape.

If I want a ROM of a game I've never played before? There's a pile of websites with everything ever released individually downloadable, or GoodX torrents, etc. Back in the day, I'd scour whatever "DELETE IN 90 DAYS!!!" geocities pages which might have a dozen or so games, or I'd poke around on mIRC, but who knows if anyone would have what I was after. Plus the state of emulation back then, blah.

SNES9x is supposed to combine split roms, but I know personally that
it doesn't always work properly. Here is a way you can do it yourself
without hassling with a program.

At a dos prompt type: copy /b rom.1+rom.2+rom.3 rom.smc

Where rom.1=filename of rom plus extention. Note: this works best with
files with the number extensions. The last part(rom.smc) is the filename
you want it to be. Try .smc first, and if that doesn't work try .fig

Whoa, I totally forgot about the concept of split roms.

Oh the arcades and game rooms in the Navy early 90s to mid 90s when I got out? loving MAGICAL. Linked cabinets of Virtua Racing, Daytona, Outrunners, Super Street Fighter 2. Classics like environmental Disks of Tron, Star Wars Atari, Time Pilot. 6 player 2 Screen X Men, Mortal Kombats. Infamous Kusoges like the Gal's Panic anime porno Qix, Time Killers, that Hologram Cowboy Sega game. Pinballs. Go around the base or on some of the larger ships like mine and you WERE finding arcade machines Go do some laundry on base because the one on ship basically meant your day was spent in that tiny laundry room praying for death? Throw some coin in the jukebox to hear November Rain then play a couple games of Killer Instinct and some SHMUPs or maybe NBA Jam.

Base theater? Make it a double feature and play some Virtua Fighter or Tekken or Bust a Move! (Or get irritated by some rear end in a top hat who kept hopping in your Street Fighter Alpha game when you were just about to beat an AI and THEN he hops in with Guy that you own, then you go back and the AI owns you. Repeat for a HALF GODDAMNED HOUR. :doom: )

When I was up in Illinois it was just a cheap train ride down to Chicago. Go down to North Pier Mall. Register for some BATTLETECH CENTER and walk to the other side and play some Virtuality stuff or GI Joe or BOTS or even a Laser Tag thing while you wait. Hell, going IN the service the processing center had Konami Aliens which actually made going to it for paperwork not entirely awful. (Except for having to do the DUCK WALK. That was some loving dumb poo poo. My recruiter joked when I told him about it that he and some other recruiters tried to do it and the results were... comical.)

I probably picked the best time to be in the Navy as it was like the last golden age of arcades. Or if we consider the early 80s to be the actual would it make the early mid 90s the silver age? Does it matter?

There is one third person kinda rendered rally car game we had on ship I wished I knew the name of. It was loving fun as poo poo even though it was hard. I think it might have been by Atari but I am not too sure. The car was loving huge on screen though.

Boot camp circa 2005 had a pretty good arcade setup. You had your usual Namco gun games and poo poo but also a row of Neo Geo cabinets and older Capcom machines. My berthing had a Raiden machine for some reason and it's one of the few shooters I can 1-credit.

I guess it was sometime in 93, I happened to notice a half-hour show at 6am on Saturday in our local TV guide (not the national magazine, a newspaper-like booklet that came with sunday's paper) that just said "Dragon" in the limited space for that slot. I was really into the Dragon Warrior games on NES and I had heard there was an anime of it, so I was excited that it could be it. For whatever reason I actually got up at 5:45 to watch it live instead of taping. I was disappointed at first to find that it was Dragon Ball instead (not Z, the original), but I watched the episode and found it hilarious. They completely butchered the 4th wall and that was an extremely rare thing to see in a kid's cartoon, so I thought it was really clever and liked it a lot.

It wasn't worth waking up at the asscrack of dawn on a Saturday, though. And the next time I thought to set the VCR to tape it, it was no longer in the TV guide. I've still never seen the Dragon Quest anime or the rest of Dragon Ball.

Dragon Ball is still pretty good. It's lighthearted action comedy and switches between monster of the week and story arcs but never becomes overbearing or drawn out. It avoids the DBZ stereotype of people screaming for 40 episodes before something exciting happens. And since the power level is pretty low the stakes are always high and one-off characters end up being far more interesting when they can't sneeze and blow up the planet.

Yes. CAGE is what I called Comics and Gaming Exchange which became Past Present Future sometime in the late 90's and moved locations about twice.

If it's obscure enough you can probably watch it on YouTube without having to hunt through awful torrent sites.

Ohh ok I remember that place, used to get magic cards and manga back when manga was released in comic book like volumes. And yeah Tate's was ok for getting good anime before digital fansubs but once those became prevalent the place became completely worthless, though the atmosphere is way less "comic book guy" and more "tumblr geek chic" these days, where it feels like whatever the modern version of a hot topic is. they have nothing interesting.

The earliest one I can think of that's at least decent is the the Ghost in the Shell PS1 game but there's got to be a better, earlier example. The SNES DBZ RPG with the card-based battle system isn't what you'd call "good," but high school me was a big fan and even now I have to admit that it's kind of fun just for all of the opportunities the game gives you to break with canon.

Natsume's Mitsume ga Tooru game for Famicom is quite good.

I see a lot of reverence for the Hokuto no Ken Mark-III game in Japan (the one we got for Master System as Black Belt) but I don't see the appeal.

The half-translated Pokemon Gold rom that was floating around online got passed around my gradeschool class on a floppy disc a ton, I think that was how everyone in my school learned that emulators were a thing. For some reason nobody ever made extra discs with it on them so there were a few fights that broke out when someone refused to give it to somebody else to take home and copy onto their computer.

Yeah, this sounds about right. And then there was me, who just wanted to trade some loving Pokemon on the actual Game Boy but nooo, everyone's just going to play on emulators because it's free and you're stupid if you buy things (except Pokemon cards, which I never gave a single poo poo about).

I'd like to see a write up for this. Take a journey down Popular Anime XYZ's line of games.

Golgo 13 isn't a great game but it has a special place in a lot of people's hearts I think.

And Macross Scrambled Valkyrie is the best shooter on SFC, Comcept games be damned.

Also the Ackman games on SFC and Konami's work on Madara were pretty good although arguably those are based on their respective manga, and not anime.

On Japanese PCs there was a lot of crossover between manga and anime artists so you'd get these beautifully illustrated games that looked like licensed titles but weren't.

And if you really stretch the definition, Super Robot Taisen is a crossover of anime that's really long running.

And to sorta combine the two recent topics, back when I was in high school my mom worked at the library of my old middle school so I'd just dick around in there when I got out. I ended up installing a torrent client to a computer and using that to download a ton of anime in the background since they never turned them off. Every day after school I would slowly load as much of it as I could onto a couple of Zip disks, then bring them home and copy them onto my computer. Eventually one of them broke and got a corrupted episode of Chobits stuck on it forever, which made me extra mad cause that show ended up being garbo. Even with the one disk all of this was still faster and more efficient than doing it at home on my connection.
