isnt the allergy thing an even better reason to trust science to fix alcoholism over some higher power bullshit? also, through god everything is possible so why not ask him to fix your allergy so you can drink normal? unless your higher power's power limit runs out just short of being able to fix allergies

I'm an not addict, but I have the potential to be one because I do have an addictive personality and I'm entirely open to using drugs in a recreational fashion to lessen the pain of existence and the endless spiritual suffering. Today after I go home after work I'll find myself agonizingly bored -- so bored that I could just stay in bed. There's always this gnawing sense of dissatisfaction, of something missing, to which alcohol/etc seem like a perfect solution. Maybe there's just too much stimulation going on all the time -- too much porn, gaming, netfix etc such that I need to get comfortable with less stimulation so that mild stimulation can make my day --- a decently cooked meal, an episode of this or that, a job well done at work etc. It seems like there has to be a deeper cause to addiction issues beyond self-control. Maybe it's because life kind of sucks.

There is a heritable component to addiction - exactly how much of it is nature versus nurture is not entirely known. Genetics play some role, though. If you look at family history it is often a pretty clear generational line - I can easily trace alcohol back up my family tree on my dad's side.

I realized that one of my tells for going really off the rails was when I started talking to myself in the second person. "You this" and "you that." Was a bit of an epiphany at the time. I still talk to myself a lot, though. Probably too much. The cats seem to appreciate it, at least.
