Being normie is the best thing about DSA. It's like the primary thing that makes it more likely to succeed than other leftist groups.

It's basically the same thing that happens with music. People whose identities are entirely wrapped up in one thing and in arguing about it online love nothing more than finding excuses to call other people posers. I guess 80's metal kitsch is sort of in now so every other week some pop star is spotted wearing a Slayer shirt and people who take being a metalhead online get super loving mad about it. There are plenty of legit criticisms to be made of DSA but 90% of the bitching about it I see on twitter seem like the socialist version of people who scream about Lady Gaga stealing their thrash metal valor or whatever. I get that it's a joke and comrade+memes make it a fun thing to be a part of, but you are scaring off people who may otherwise be interested in joining. My wife is pretty left and I had to talk her into ignoring that stuff and joining anyways. She couldn't be happier and is doing quite a bit of volunteering, but is still put off by some of it. Keep that poo poo to RocketChat. Anything public facing should consider the fact that you want to bring centerist Dems into the fold. If the only thing DSA is going after is people further left of them... uh... we have a problem.

Memes and comrade stuff is fun, you shouldnt use jargon heavy speak around anyone who wont understand it and you should develop a reading circle/group in your DSA designed to help educate libs and new ppl on socialist theory.

The occasional meme about 'fully-automated gay space luxury communism' may make you that guy, though. Also, here's a fun discussion item that I reliably raise eyebrows with: quote:Here's one data point worth remembering. When you measure the test scores of American schools with a child poverty rate of less than 20%, our kids not only outperform the Finns, they outperform every nation in the world. quote:the Southern Education Foundation reveals that nearly half of all U.S. public school students live in poverty. Poverty has risen in every state since President Clinton left office. Our 'public education crisis' is actually a poverty crisis. Public education is typically thought of in context of public education. It needs to be thought of in context of poverty. What can be done in that direction? Breakfast programs, improved lunches, more after-school programs, etc. A lot of the poorest students at my high school had bad grades and the bad grades kept them out of extra-curriculars. I wonder if that policy is common and targetable?

Oh I'm actually well aware of that and I think generally the left has a communication issue with respect to the rest of the political spectrum (real talk does anyone right of Trotsky even know what "praxis" is?). But in-jokes and acknowledgement of the fact that we really are socialists are not the real problem there.

I think the national org could do more to highlight the actual work its chapters do, which would probably help appeal to people who aren't online irony boys, but this complaint becoming so ubiquitous is kind of weird to me. When I tell normie friends about DSA I talk about the work my local is doing and how that ties into an overall criticism of centrist liberalism. I don't talk to them about, like, Larry Website, or YDSA chapters dunking on the Turning Point USA twitter account. Outside of Larry and some of the YDSA chapters on twitter, it seems like most of the official, public facing outlets for the organization ARE pretty normie? The DSA facebook page mostly shares articles from the website and my chapter's Facebook page primarily posts the various events and actions going on around here.

DSA should be fun and cool and full of people with a good sense of humor and not full of the standard activist type person that is super annoying and tiring to be around. think about how terrible and insufferable the centrist hillary supporters you've met are and ask yourself if they're going to help build a movement. politically active people are the exception to the norm and we should be shooting for people that want to be active, are good to be around, and are willing to be a little idealistic and rebellious. basically the opposite of anyone that would have been volunteering for centrist dem campaigns pre trump. i think an overly sanitized public face is boring and won't help us be distinctive from the dems or moveon.org or whatever lovely liberal groups already exist. socialists in the US are people willing to break out of the capitalist ideology that we're all raised under. it takes a little bit of a rebel personality-wise to get there and we don't want to lose what attracts those kinds of people to our org. if we scare off some centrist dem boomers who gives a poo poo, they were gonna ruin the happy hour anyway.

if we dilute our beliefs and ideas to cater to people who can just as easily be converted to believe in the holy doctrine of Marx then why dilute it in the first place. Here's your quick reminder that we cannot convert liberals or centrists without them already being disillusioned with liberalism or centrism in the first place. We are never gonna convert Sally Albright or whoever the gently caress whats next, we aren't gonna teach Marx or Lenin in the reading groups? Gonna drop anti-capitalism next? Yeah DSA are just socdems but compromising on your beliefs will just make you a poo poo dem in the end Like you're assuming people are stupid. We had our chapter's Political Officer teach the fundamentals of Marxism, including the basics and background of both Marxism and capitalism, in like 30 minutes in simple and easy terms. If you think people are stupid babies to be coddled not only will that dilute our message but turn people off harder than the strawman you build Phi230 has issued a correction as of 21:41 on Mar 15, 2017 |

The most recent DSA Facebook post is getting some lovely comments from men who don't want to read about feminism. I don't know that I have the rhetorical skills to right that ship, but it seems like a much worse problem than fighting over memes.
