I tethered my netbook to my feature phone via a USB Bluetooth dongle, dialing up like an old fashioned modem, to access my online banking, in order to transfer the money when I bought my car in 2012. It felt so futuristic to me. Now I just have an app on my phone for that.

KozmoNaut posted:I loved my netbook, it was so awesome and tiny and portable. Asus EEEPCs were the hottest thing when they came out. The modding community to make them better was great. Mod in a touchscreen overlay, a USB hub for multiple USB sticks of NAND memory to escape the 8GB internal storage. I dearly loved that thing. Then I too got a smartphone and a proper laptop. I still have an MSI Wind netbook for light duties when I can't be arsed dragging around my Toughbook (sometimes literally dragging).

I worked at an electronics recycling/reclamation facility for a bit in college and those stupid Toughbooks always seemed like they were every bit as fragile and damage-prone as a regular laptop except 3 times the weight

The CF19 was a beast. We had them for years as charting computers, and I've accidentally flung one across a parking lot before and had them come out unscathed.

We deployed them for home health nurses. If they can survive that, they drat sure live up to the name. They did have different flavors though, from fully rugged to "meh."

Frozen Pizza Party posted:I wish it was a story worth telling I got in on the first batch of US Tiko's. While the printer does have its flaws, I still got a working printer FWIW. Lubed it with some lithium grease (used the spray, bad idea don't do this even though it works) and have the weight mounts printed for the last .01% of slop the motors have in their gearbox, but for the most part the thing prints rather OK now. I just have to figure out the settings to make it print it's best depending on what I am printing and with what filament. For $175 I can't complain too much since it does work and any printer at the time I KS'ed it the cheapest 3D printers were in the $499+ realm that I can remember, and also weren't very good. Now there are a ton for $299 or so that are actually quite good and I may pick one of them up. The only big issue I have with the Tiko currently is its too bloody small (especially when I prints its stupid raft, I have to figure out how to get this thing to use Simplify3D or Cura or something). One of my recent prints was a Business Card holder. Turned out ok and just needs a little sanding. Man this thread is right up my ally otherwise... I have so much relic tech crap from my first PDA and Windows Mobile phones to Nintendo Virtual Boy hah. On the talk of Netbooks which brings us to Atom processors, would anyone be interested in a barebones Atom powered HTPC? I have 2 atom boards, (One Intel board with a Atom 270 I bet, 4G ram and not much else, would make a great Nas board. Another Zotac with a D510 Dual Core Atom with Nvidia Ion and Wifi/BT, 4G Ram, etc which makes a capable HTPC) I need to find them good homes as they work great, but take up space I need to start cleaning out. I could part with the Boards+Ram alone or build it into a tiny case and an SSD for a little more. EdEddnEddy has a new favorite as of 23:42 on Mar 14, 2017 |

Frozen Pizza Party posted:Cool that you got one that works, I'm just bitter because like 11k other people, I'm out $250. Yea I can understand that completely. The one major backing I did on KS was for Touch VR which turned out to be a great project with one bad dude that handled the money. Left all the devs high and dry and bought a house or something. That $600 I will never see again. Luckily the only other fails were a few $15-20 games. The rest so far has come through. I still hold a little hope with Tiko since they have a lot of good IP/Assets and a setup manufacture process so I would think if they can get some investors or another 3D printing company that wanted to get into building Delta printers, would make them an attractive buy. Guess we will have to wait and see.

EdEddnEddy posted:Yea I can understand that completely. Yeah, I'd be ecstatic if they found an investor to take over the project or something, but I'm not putting my eggs in that basket. It really is appealing, as a DIY delta owner, the frustration and tribulation that I've gone through to get this printer working the way I want it, and working well has been a ton, but that's all part of the game. I really wanted the Tiko to just churn out simple poo poo for my etsy shop, which it would have been great at doing. So all in all, it's just the money that's got the bad taste in my mouth, and I'm pretty bummed about the project not being fulfilled as planned.
