Many of the midsized and under crossovers don't feel big while driving and have a smaller footprint than a midsized sedan.

Then you get into compact and subcompact crossovers and size is even less of an issue

Our 2011 Edge has considerably more space in the front and rear seats than my '08 Maxima had previously. The maxima was substantially larger externally (except in height). A lot of these CUVs are brilliantly packaged.

With Ford's Cyclone V6 it's actually got a little power, too.

Yeah it's a really cool idea and I certainly don't want it to be a failure but I keep thinking about all the other well-intentioned but horribly executed engine technologies like the Cadillac V8-6-4 in the '80s that OEMs duped consumers into paying money to be beta testers.

Yeah, this sounds real reassuring:

We've come a long, long way since then--it's much more feasible to use this technology now because CAD is a million times better than it was back then (if they even used it on that terrible engine).

http://www.motortrend.com/cars/alfa...s60-comparison/

quote:

9TH PLACE: INFINITI Q50 2.0T

Big on value and interior space, the Infiniti left our judges with nothing else nice to say.

8TH PLACE: VOLVO S60 T6

Stylish and safe, the Volvo can’t escape its long-past sell-by date. It’s an old car in a hyper-competitive class, and it just can’t keep up anymore.

7TH PLACE: BMW 330I

How the mighty have fallen. The reigning winner and standard-bearer of the class suffers from old age, dulled dynamics, and a lack of personality.

6TH PLACE: JAGUAR XE 25T

A new standard in the sporty-handling versus refined-ride equation, the Jaguar was undone by its tiny back seat, boring interior styling, and buggy infotainment system.

5TH PLACE: CADILLAC ATS 2.0T

The best sport sedan chassis in the class is let down by a useless back seat and barely acceptable infotainment system.

4TH PLACE: LEXUS IS 200T F SPORT

A good all-around performer, the weighty Lexus is underserved by its overstressed engine, unintuitive infotainment system, and polarizing styling.

3RD PLACE: MERCEDES-BENZ C300

The most luxurious of the field, the Mercedes needs to improve its ride quality and improve the value proposition of its pricing.

2ND PLACE: AUDI A4 2.0T QUATTRO

Smart, practical, sophisticated, and something of a Q-ship, the Audi quietly crawled its way up the podium but lacked the personality to take the top spot.

1ST PLACE: ALFA ROMEO GIULIA

Efficient, economical, quick, safe, and without question the most fun to drive, the Giulia is a car we’re willing to gamble on despite its reliability legacy and lack of cost-of -ownership data.

True, and if I recall that's one of the reasons why I-3 engines are coming back.

But the point already brought up about more moving parts located in the deepest recessions of the motor is something that seems indisputable. Look at the consequences from widespread implementation of automotive technologies that despite being used for decades in other applications like direct injection and CVT transmissions still encountered plenty of issues initially for certain manufacturers.

I do hope it becomes a viable technology based upon the potential it brings to the table of course, but I would personally be wary if I cared to purchase a new INFINITI that had this engine...and would certainly accept the possibility of being stuck in a loaner for a month or more while the dealer goes back and forth with Nissan USA.

It's possible that I'm just biased and cynical from having to deal with far too many goatfuck BMW PUMA cases for one lifetime. Very likely in fact, thankfully those days are long over.

Chances are you'd be in a nicer loaner since the Q50 is a base model and most luxury Japanese car dealers offer a choice from their whole model lineup as free loaners during service. The German brands around here tend to use Toyotas, Porsche uses base Cayennes and the Jeep dealers are like 'lol, loaners?' which is disappointing but not surprising.

My dad always gets a new E class loaner for his previous gen E class and a similar situation when he had a 5 series. But the luxury car market is pretty competitive in north Chicagoland so maybe that's the reason why.

Since prices have gone up so much, it's a little easy to lose track of this whole segment being compact entry luxury. They're not supposed to be really nice cars, despite costing almost $50k now. The only one of these that looks to have a nice interior is the C-class, which in the latest refresh got a big step up in interior materials.

If you want the actually nice Audi interior, look at the A7. Same for all the other makes.

I think Audi and VW are basically dancing around the question of which of their names the inevitable combined brand in North America is going to operate under at the moment.

Occasionally one of the VW engineers burps out a good car like the Golf R in the hopes of saving his employer's hate heritage when the bean counters take their quarterly look at shuttering VWOA, and Audi's engineers crap out some slumrod like the S3 sedan to try and prove that they can make high-margin leasebait too.

The Trump administration is probably the best thing that could happen to VWOA, though. Now their core demographic can be more out about their affilitations, which means a bigger spend on trim packages.

It's funny you mentioned the Golf R & S3, since they're the same car under the skin. I haven't driven a Golf R, but I have driven a few S3's, and they are enormously entertaining. As soon as my kids are out of giant fuckoff car seats, I'll get an S3. As much as I'm a wagon & hatch guy, the S3 sedan looks loads better than the S3 Sportback, so I'm not heartbroken that we don't get it. Plus, I just couldn't spend $40k for a Golf. However, if VW were to bring the Golf R wagon to the US, I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Yeah, but like they said. One car isn't impacting the reliability rating. I know it's fun to poke fun at Alfa / FIAT rust / unreliability (just look at the comment in that video blaming FIAT for Chryslers bad quality), but then you look at actual statistics and it becomes clear that what you don't want to buy is anything in the VAG group.

It could very well turn out that the Giulia is below average in reliability as well, but unless there is some catastrophical failure points it won't stop me getting one. I mean people keep buying BMWs even though it's said that you should never own one out of warranty. I'd say the big hurdle for Alfa is to get past the rotten dealers. At least the UK has amazing indie specialists though.

Dude when the loving headliner wobbles when you press it more than it does on my friend's base model Micra from the late 80s I feel it's fair to say the interior feels below budget.

When the door pockets are made of plastic that isn't exactly stiff and therefore flexes more than your average meathead in the gym despite there being gently caress all in the door pocket I feel it's fair to say the interior feels below budget.

When the centre console has no sound deadening and creaks when you touch it I feel it's fair to say the interior feels low budget.

When the grip you use to close the door has material that sloughs around when you touch it more than an old lady's skin I feel it's fair to say the interior feels below budget.

...and this is me sat in the car for the first 2 minutes. If I'd spunked £45k on this car and got this level of bullshit I'd not be impressed. And if you're suggesting that competitor vehicles are about on par with this then I honestly have no idea what the gently caress went wrong with manufacturing processes. Just loving

*edit: actually to add to the interior gripes, the loving glove box. On a normal glove box there's a little catch you press with one hand and open it. XC90? It has a button on the centre console which tells a little motor to open it instead BECAUSE FUTURE AND WE DON'T WANT TO SEE THINGS. It then drops it on your kneecap. So you need to use 2 hands to open the loving glovebox. Like how did that get past user experience/ergonomics??
