imo Bernie is a real and genuine leftist who really does care about the cause, doesn't have any particular ulterior motives, and is more concerned with getting good things done than engaging in ideological slapfights. he's a really good leftist! unfortunately, he's not really a superb politician or leader. he's always had his heart in exactly the right place, and he's always been willing to stand up and give a really good speech that basically no one will listen to, but he tends to have little to no impact on legislation even when he's in a position to play the swing vote, and he didn't heavily involve himself in organizing fellow leftists or pushing to get more leftists in office until fairly recently. there was the Congressional Progressive Caucus, but I wouldn't necessarily call that a success his transformation in 2016 into the unofficial leader of the left seems to be something that he's not really one hundred percent comfortable with, but he's doing it anyway because in twenty-five loving years in Congress no one else has even seriously tried to create a national general leftist movement and he'd really like to see the left make some actual progress before he dies. he seems like he'd really rather just sit in Congress helping a cadre of fellow leftists put together solid legislation and then pushing it through, but there are no fellow leftists and it seems like there weren't going to be any no matter how long he waited kind of a tragic hero sort of thing, really

He made the decision to do it when he started. His entire career is about doing the thing that must be done because no one else is doing it. Someone had to be the voice. It's why he made those speeches, even if he knew only a few would listen. He also knows that despite that, eventually more and more people will come as long as the voice is there. Him being an outreach leader is also something that must be done.

Yeah, Bernie gets a lot done in congress, he just does it by exploiting amendments and riders. Which lead to the truly eyerollworthy "the only thing Bernie has ever done was name a post office!!!" attack. At one point he was being attacked for being 'hard to work with' by allegedly jeapordizing a bill with his amendments (the bill passed with said additions in-tact).
