Good lord the Toronto media culture is toxic. Leafs lose badly, is it because they went fishing 2 days ago?

At least Mirtle considers the possibility that it isn't literally sunshine that makes the Leafs bad. It could be a "scarier proposition": maybe the Leafs aren't that good yet.

It's toxic, but is it toxic enough to chase a guy off of twitter just for liking a few bigoted tweets and being away so the team could start winning again?

quote:

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/bobby-ryan-deletes-twitter-taking-controversial-tweets-with-him-210516089.html

What didn’t make the TSN story, either because Ryan didn’t address it or because it wasn’t on writer Ian Mendes’s radar, were some questionable decisions by Ryan to support Islamophobic rhetoric and other controversial messages.

Ryan’s prejudiced behaviour on twitter goes beyond his tweets. His “likes” are a dumpster fire of racism. They reveal a penchant for agreeing with the worst racists active in American politics right now. He’s liked tweets about Donald Trump preventing Muslims from entering the United States and racists tweets about Barack Obama. There are more examples. This is a pattern, this is prejudice. Like everyone, he’s entitled to his opinions. Like everyone, he’s not above criticism.

His deletion of Twitter coincided with some hockey fans taking a run at him for the team playing well in his absence.

There are three clubs that have never finished below the Blue Jackets in the NHL's overall standings: Boston, the New York Rangers, and San Jose.

That's both impressive given how bad the CBJ have been through the bulk of their history and the fact it's almost certain to change this year.

I would've thought Detroit would've been on the list but if I remember right, the Wings were WC2 the year the CBJ took on the Pens as WC1.

Probably mad at Crawford for going down like a sack of flour.

When toftbo eats a puck he finishes the shift and probably blocks four more shots on his way to the bench.

Yep. OBJ and some receivers went to Miami and took a cruise with Trey Songz on a day off. They then lost the ensuing playoff game. Hot taeks abounded.

The real question, who will win a playoff series first? Columbus, Winnipeg, or Las Vegas?

(The Devils franchise didn't win a playoff series until their 14th season). Winnipeg is going to hit 17. Columbus is on 16. That's incredible.

Barring some tomfoolery, Columbus should get home ice and a pretty favorable opponent for round 1 so I'd be surprised if they didn't finally break through this year.

It's not exactly set in stone that any of Pittsburgh, Washington, or Columbus will be able to count on having home ice either given how close they all are in the standings.

It's funny to make jokes about the Capitals winning another Presidents Trophy, but this year seems like a really nice year to win the Presidents Trophy. A home series against like the Islanders or Leafs seems a whole lot better than the Penguins or Jackets in the first round. Though I'd be terrified if the Lightning get the WC2 spot, even though it would be nice for me since I live near Tampa and could go to all of the games.

I wish it wasn't too late to be smart like the Rangers and tank our way into the first WC spot.

This is true even with a healthy Stamkos. Only way I see them getting out of the first round is if Boston falls off and they sneak their way to the 3 spot in the Atlantic and face Ottawa. Or if Washington goes full Washington in the first round.

As long as they don't completely forget how to play as they have all season between now and raising the Cup getting bounced, it's quite possible Columbus does it this year. Home ice and the 1 seed would help that.

Don't get me wrong, there is no good draw if they wind up 2 or 3 as Washington and even banged up Pittsburgh are scary (Metro 2/3 matchup is a gauntlet no matter who's in it), but I feel much better about their chances this year than I did in 2013-14, when even the optimist in me went "Well...maybe? Probably not, but...I...guess there's a shot?".

It would be ungoddamnbelievable.

e- I'm not sure the CBJ would get a "favorable" game under the old system depending on where they land either. Assuming 1 and 2 are the Division winners, if it started today, it'd look like this:
WSH/NYI
MTL/BOS
PIT/OTT
CBJ/NYR

...and they'd get either NYR (prone to third period comebacks vs. CBJ), OTT (given them trouble this year), BOS (REALLY have given them trouble this year), or NYI (eh)/TBL (surging Bolts+return of Stamkos makes this interesting)/TOR (eh).

Ideally yeah, as much as opinions are divided a guy like Shattenkirk would be a big boon. Ultimately the biggest strides on the roster are going to come from the development and graduation of all the young guys though, imo.

What I'd hate to see is the team lose out on the marquee FA signings and settle for giving medium contracts to middle pairing guys. The bottom pair can be improved for basically no money and it's diminishing returns otherwise.

Whatever Alzner gets this offseason is going to be way too much. He can play okay defense and block some shots but he very much was propped up by playing alongside Matt Niskanen for a few years (and Holtby being very good), and now that he isn't partners with Niskanen, surprise he stinks! He's also coming off major groin surgery last year and his mobility is much worse. He's going to get $5M+ and whoever gives it to him will immediately regret it IMO.

I mean this with all honesty: I'm not sure Alzner is better than Brooks Orpik. And he certainly shouldn't be mentioned in the same breath as good defensive D like Hjalmarsson, Vlasic, Braun, Tanev, etc. He doesn't make catastrophic blunders but he has a dramatic negative impact on the Capitals offense.

I don't think Alzner is as terrible as a lot of Caps fans do, but he definitely compares unfavorably to almost everyone else on the Caps defense. Hard to say if he'd do better somewhere else. He's kind of slow and he doesn't score for poo poo, but he's not necessarily a liability either. Overall he's probably a perfectly fine second pairing guy, especially if you can pair him with someone to make up for his deficiencies like the Caps did with Carlson and Niskanen . Either way, my guess is that someone will give him way too much money this offseason - especially if the Caps actually go on a decent run this year. Some of the things he's actually good at is stuff people hype in the playoffs like blocking shots, killing penalties, etc.
