The gyro bridges the gap pretty well, actually. You'll still be more capable with a mouse but the gyro makes it pretty 1:1 and it is nice to have a console's flexibility on top of it.

There are more useful descriptors than sort-of applicable ones like "open world."

"First person RPG" does a lot more to explain what makes Deus Ex different from Ultima VII than "open world."

I agree on that point, but the discussion wasn't "how to best describe this game," it was "how to best describe the kind of world layout a game has."

I'm just saying that there are different ways to describe the different ways games handle worlds. I'd call Half-Life a "linear shooter" while a slightly more open design like in Thief 2 or the original Deus Ex would be "linear arenas," on up to hub and spoke games, then onto open world. It basically boils down to how many physical spaces each game is divided into and how free you are within each space in terms of how much you can do, what order you can do those things in, and how many of the game's other areas you can access from each section.

Sure it's a dumb and pedantic discussion on one particular bit of minutia about video games, but it still can be useful info, especially considering that a game's world can really dictate what the gameplay will be like.

It's a proper port. Metal Slug games get pretty intense with the sprites and can cause slowdowns. Just like the arcade version.

Wasn't Metal Slug 3 the one that had massive slowdown issues to the point that they re-released the entire game under the same name with a different subtitle, and it was identical to 3 but without the slowdown?

Gyro feels more natural than mouse or stick.

Mouse feels... easy? cheap-o. Unengaging. Yup, there it is, click. Got it. It doesn't feel like you are connected or like physical skill is involved. I know it's more reliable and top-tier competitive and whatnot, but I'm talking about feel and fun, and it's very subjective and experiential.

I want my exciting game box plugged into my bigass TV and with a different input device from doing taxes.

Splatoon felt perfectly natural and like I was actually engaged in what was happening much more than clicking a mouse ever could for me.

actually this segues into a question: how many people just had a really poo poo time with the gyro controls in botw

it felt like a step backwards from how well it worked on the 3DS zelda remakes and I'm not sure if it's "smaller, less sensitive gyro because joycon size" or if the right joycon with my system was also hosed, just not in the same way as the left

But Japan has multiple retail peaks throughout the year, unlike USA's Christmas-or-bust seasonality.

In Japan, NCL released in March to catch the final month of their 2017 fiscal year but also to tap into the spring break before a new business year and a new school year.
New school year means tons of kids get gifts to celebrate them enrolling in kindergarten, primary school, etc., on up. I imagine Nintendo's aim is to get portable units in the hands of early-adopter end-user targets and get them primed for socializing with more of their ilk.

The next big title is Mario Kart 8D, and that's slated for April 28, the start of Golden Week holidays that goes for around a week. Families visit grandparents and vice-versa, resulting in more gifting to kids.

The summer holidays should see Splatoon 2 and there's also that Zelda DLC pack coming in the early August obon holiday week in which families visit...you get the idea.

And, there's Mario for the year-end.
They also have Arms coming soon, too. Xenoblade 2's in the pipeline. One has to wonder when they'll spring Pokemon and Animal Crossing on us.
I think Nintendo actually has it figured out as far what to do with Japan.

Gyro depends on what position your con is in when the motors kick in, right? My problem is tht I play with the controller in weird positions sometimes and so I get messed up and have to use the joystick while i reorient my JoyCon to be facing straight ahead, THEN when gyro starts up it works super great.

It should just be relative to whatever direction it's facing when you enter the aiming.

It's objectively less precise, as evidenced by how every console shooter without motion controls requires some degree of aim assist and/or auto aim.
