This gif reminds me of something my dad said happened to him and his friend Terry when they were in college. They both went to a small college in northern Michigan for Pharmacy. Terry owned a small cabin/cottage on a lake in south Michigan (sort of near Kalamazoo) that the two would use on the weekends and during the summer. Now Terry had a boat, but the property didn't have a dock, so what they would do is come in at speed, cut the engine at a certain point and then glide through a patch of lily pads until they came to a stop on shore. They would end up with enough of the boat beached to be secure, but not so much that it would be difficult to get the boat back in the water. It was the perfect system. Now the two had tried to fight the lily pads before. They would pull them occasionally and then grow frustrated when they'd quickly come back. However, one summer they decided they were going to get rid of the lily pads once and for all and they came up with a plan: they would cover the lily pads with a sheet of black plastic. After all, they were scientists and they knew that green plants needed sunlight to survive. So they covered the lily pads and then went out on the boat to drink and goof off. After some time, they headed back to the cabin and performed their standard beach approach. Unfortunately, they forgot about the black plastic and didn't notice it since it had taken on some water and was floating an inch or so below the surface. They hit the black plastic just after they cut the engine. Now I don't really believe my dad when he swears they sped up upon hitting the plastic, but I do believe that they didn't slow down. As they hit the beach at almost full speed, my dad says all he could see was a tree stump about halfway up the yard because they were aimed directly at it and he wasn't sure they were going to stop before hitting it. Luckily, they ended up a foot or two short of it, but the boat was completely beached. It wasn't until sometime later that they realized their plan never would have worked because lily pad root structures are weird and complex. A lily pad on one side of the lake can be connected to a lily pad a hundred yards away, so covering it in plastic does nothing to stop it from getting energy. I hope you all enjoyed the story about my dad's antics.
