https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b7wNSIIXYY Eh Adolescence has more typical action choreography and I honestly prefer the series ( ex: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdfdog4Xemo ) with the shots through the side of the arena and the heavy use of alternating character closeups. I think the heavy use of close ups throughout most of the fight scenes really emphasizes how they're more about the different characters' inner turmoil than Utena being the best swordfighter or whatever. Outside of a few really suspenseful (and awesome) moments like Juri being defeated by the sword falling straight out of the sky (which pans past the girl she loves and the guy kissing as it falls, a shot that appears repeatedly with the girl covering Juri's eyes) the fighters clash for a while and then Utena autowins when the prince comes down, and in many of the fights the fighting is interspersed with cuts to the character conflict established earlier in the ep (juri with that one girl, miki and his sister etc.) In a Kurosawa movie the fights are about one party triumphing over the other in martial skill and the choreography is appropriately flashy to demonstrate that, in Utena they're there to explore the characters' emotions; like how in Miki's car fight (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2qdNAbCh6NM) he's starting to beat her, but gets distracted by his sister kissing Anthy (his jealousy over her being his reoccuring issue throughout the show) and then you get that cool car swerving still with the light trails and the crashing sound effect as his rose gets popped. And for stuff like the cars and the black rose desks I think the more theatrical rather than realistic fighting style helps integrate the really surreal elements into the scene, because all of it feels sort of unreal rather than having more realistic choreography clashing with the completely unrealistic environment. (Obviously the latter can be done well but what Utena does is already works) tldr:

I was seriously obsessed with the duel song lyrics in highschool for a while. All the one's that were like, weird impressions of ancient stuff really got my imagination going.Srice posted:I firmly believe that feeling that way means you did good I actually appreciate it a lot more after analyzing it like that, after not having really thought about it for a long long time. It's a lot smarter than I really noticed watching it the first time.

DisDisDis posted:The hosed up thing is You can have unique fights and still be theatrical. It's not mutually exclusive. The problem is that the show is so hamstrung by its obviously low budget when it could've been even better. Each battle is meant to be insight into their deeper desires and feelings, and it completely undercuts the emotional tension as a visual metaphor for a battle of wills; people meant to be special, composed of a unique sense of destiny- because the entire thing looks cheap. Came across an old writeup on Katanagatari that I really liked. Really helped me parse some of the character motivations at play during the finale and how they tied into the overall meaning of the story.http://wrongeverytime.com/2013/07/15/katanagatari-and-the-weight-of-legacy/

My god the Utena degeneracy has infected everyone. The downfall of anime has come twenty years late but has arrived. Seek shelter. I have yet to encounter an elf who becomes addicted to delicious fried food and needs my help to lose weight.
