Ok that is just consistent art direction. ME was always a very smooth white 1970s future vision, or at least the Citadel species and their technology had that aesthetic to them.

Like all good stories, the second act begins with a call to action and the building of a robot.

Got 6 hours in on the SP this morning, presumably getting close to the trial block. Playing on Ultra at 1440p with a 980ti, i5 6600K, 16 gig of RAM. Might have to knock it down to 1080p, because I've definitely gotten some frame drops here and there.

Eyes and face animations are indeed not good. Not as hilariously awful and noticeable as you'd expect based on the various .gifs going around. Maybe 70-80% of the time, they look passable in motion. Not notably good, just good enough. But then you hit a bad one, and boy howdy is it :stare: It obviously suffers in comparison to Witcher 3, but also Horizon: Zero Dawn and even DAI. As others have mentioned, it's mostly the Asari and humans, Krogan/Turians/Salarians have all been fine.

It wouldn't be too hard to overlook that, if the first six hours of plot, missions, characters, dialogue/VA etc. didn't all feel like a tepid ME1 knockoff. I feel hooked into none of it. I wouldn't call it actively bad, per se, it's just bland as gently caress. It's notable in its blandness. Despite the range in quality overall, every ME and DA game has had something within the first six hours that hooked my attention.

The only bit that has piqued my interest at all so far was meeting Vetra -- she seems like she might be an interesting character. Liam is aggressively boring. Cora's not shown much one way or another. Just met Peebee. She was... okay. Still early to judge, but her first impression wasn't half as bad as Sera's in DAI.

I don't mind the Pathfinder thing that some people were complaining about. It's not exactly nepotism, and it's not exactly "Chosen One" poo poo (yet), and it's also made clear early on that Pathfinders are important and not just some Joe Schmo due to the level of integration with an AI. It's not a fresh, unique story or anything, but so far those complaints don't feel quite accurate.

Can't decide whether the various UIs/menus are just standard level bad or actual garbage. Leaning toward the latter.

Combat is fun and better than ME3, but not as smooth as I'd hoped. Jump jets and soft cover both feel like two steps forward, one step back. Not sure whether it'll smooth out with more time to adjust or not. Also, I rebound two powers to my side mouse buttons during a bit of downtime, and then couldn't shoot guns in the next fight. Died three times before I figured out that the rebinding broke shooting, somehow. That was cool.

Anyway, game mediocre. I'd call it a 6.5 - 7 so far. It's not a NMS-level trainwreck, but there's a whole lot of valid criticism of this. It should be much better after five years of development and releasing in TYOOL 2017. Most or all of it also isn't stuff fixable by a day 1 patch or DLC -- I don't even think an extra 6 - 12 months would have helped, really. This just feels like a mediocre sequel where no one on the development team had any passion for this project whatsoever. Some of it is bad, most is passable, but nothing about it shines.

Edit:

Berious posted:

True. On the other hand, every John Walker review I've ever read has been exceptionally bad and/or wrong, so it was worth a little skepticism.

this is about where i'd put it, but i am way more favorable of the combat than you, so i'd prolly be closer to 7.5. i found it a little tricky at first, but once i got going in multiplayer i was having a blast. dashing everywhere, jumping around to shotgun/melee dudes to death. getting kills by jumping, hovering, and headshotting a dude across the map.

the actual combat gameplay is the most important thing for me in bioware games and i like what they did so far. granted, my experiences so far are exclusively multiplayer, so maybe the maps and game types influence the fun factor.

Important question: does this game do the annoying OT thing where occasionally you'll accidentally pick a dialogue option when trying to click and speed up lines, or is it like DA2/3 where the dialogue wheel doesn't show up until the person's done talking

PurplieNurplie

To add on to this post, since it pretty much sums up my thoughts on the single player, the multiplayer is basically just the ME3 stuff bolted onto the new system. Some it it works (more mobility + faster pace is a refreshing change) and some of it is kind of wonky (ability cooldowns feel a bit long, at least with starting kits and not much gear, the FoV is way too close unless you zoom it out in the options, it's hard to get a sense of what's killing you/what you're killing since there's not much bullet/force impact both ways, kind of tepid melee)

The Pathfinder poo poo is really souring me on the whole game. Like, on the first real planet past the tutorial, you find a failed settlement and they're like, "oh, if only they had a PATHFINDER." It's dumb as gently caress and makes it seem like everyone else is hyper incompetent.

i made a post that has my impressions, probably on the last page. i only played me3 mp for a couple weeks when the game came out, but i played inquisition's a whole bunch so i get the overall pace and style. i really really like it so far, most of my actual complaints about it are the ui both in and out of mp games.

Thank christ for that then. It's crazy that it was still that way even in ME3. At least in that one it was sort of band-aided by getting rid of most of the middle personality choices, so there was nothing there to accidentally click, but still

Okay I take it back, in the DA:I thread lots of people who were declaring the game bad didn't go away, they instead continued to declare the game as bad while also playing the poo poo out of the game and asking for tips as to how they could get the most out of their game-playing experience.

I remember more than one case of "Hahaha boy this game sure is bad, right fellow goons? Now I'm trying to romance the templar but it requires I collect some doohickeys from the hinterlands (a bad zone btw) can anyone point me in the right direction? Boy what a bad game"

Jun 12, 2003

After playing around some in MP and in the single player with different builds, I'm really disappointed with how the adept turned out. Removing warp really fucks the class (spec) over. Adept may have been overpowered in ME3 as I beat the entire game on insanity on my first play through, but not having a primer that can attach to everything really fucks the class over. Pull and singularity require the target to lose their shields/not be armored to actually prime anything for a biotic combo, throw's only use is still for combos, and lance is a lovely warp that doesn't act as a primer, only a detonator. Adept is also going to have a lot of trouble with armor, shockwave can be anti-armor but it has always been a bad ability. RIP space mage.

There is a ten hour demo of the game out there right now that you can play. The game is a turd, considering its heritage, budget, and development time. Five years and god knows how many millions of dollars should absolutely deliver better than what we're seeing.
