From the very last page, and there are plenty of public officials that like using DOD as the "perfect target" for budget cuts. We've seen it since 1992, and at some point we go too far, but the defense budget is still the big target because it's a huge amount of money and barring a major war when it's too late, there's almost no way to prove that we've gone too far.TBeats posted:does anyone have a decent list of government spending that should get curbed without loving people? defense is the obvious one, but what else? You could also save a ton of money in DoD by auditing it but lol at any of the defense establishment / retired generals doing lobbying / fox news talking heads ever tolerating that.

Or draw back from being the lone superpower and let Russia and China continue to push themselves forward and take over that vacuum. If you want to address corruption in military spending, via acquisitions and contracts, etc, that's one thing. But ignoring that, the military budget is barely barely sufficient for the requirements that we as a nation have set for the DOD. They finally used the word "austerity" in this press conference. Finally.

https://twitter.com/lydiadepillis/status/842465666452054016 Also having personally participated in Meals on Wheels, not so much the the budget cut proposal itself (which is beyond awful), but the reasoning given me some real pause. I've seen the program work. I met many new people, and I've seen the appreciation and joy. There is the fiscal side of things of course, but saying "they don't work" and "they don't show results" is just wrong on so many levels. It's wrong, it's mean, and it's un-American. Yeah you're always going to see people who appear to just take and don't give whatsoever, but that's just life. So what? The real value comes from giving people a chance or compassion or just plain helping them out because you can. Any social programs whatsoever start to look like enabling handouts if you look at them like a shitbag. To some people even the most minor whiff of someone getting "something for nothing" is like an intolerable, personal affront. A vile, bilious insult that invalidates any possible good that might be accomplished.

It's like the Laffer Curve. Yes, theoretically there is a tax rate at which raising taxes will decrease revenue, but every developed country in the world and especially the US are so far from that point that it's barely worth discussing. And yes, theoretically there is a level of defense spending cuts that could leave the United States unable to meet its defense needs and foreign policy commitments. But that point is far below the current standard of "spending as much of the rest of the world combined", so maybe let's shelve that argument for now?

Seeing this rat in a suit making an attempt at Irish flair, reminding me that my father's side of the family worked everywhere from coal mines to the military to get by in life just to have this weedy little poo poo gloat about starving people domestic and abroad to death, inspired the most murderous feelings I have ever held in my life. Except it is not "far below the current standard." We're there. There's not enough money in the budget to recapitalize the neglected nuclear force, refresh the Navy's surface fleet and bring the average age of surface ships below 70% of their design lives (2015), recapitalize an Air Force that has been actively involved in combat operations since 1990 (and in some communities, stretching back to the early 80s) and has an average aircraft age of 27 years old (2015) but includes dozens of front-line planes designed and/or built in the 1950s and 60s, entice qualified, trained, and intelligent people to stay in uniform (ie stop the "brain drain" especially in the officer corps), and replace the 25% or more of high-end training that has been siphoned off for the past decade+. There were several consecutive years where we saw a 10% cut in flying hour funding, for example. There are roughly half the aggressor squadrons across the DOD compared to 20 years ago and far fewer real exercises, for another. Cuts have outstripped commitments. Look what a problem it was 10 years ago. We didn't have the personnel or materiel to sustain two low-intensity wars in the same part of the world; enlistment requirements were basically wiped away to let any elbow licker through the door, and we effectively dropped Afghanistan to maintain minimum numbers in Iraq. And the military is hardly in better condition today. Godholio fucked around with this message at 22:02 on Mar 16, 2017 |

The problem is not lack of funding, but how it is spent, and where it is spent. They don't need more funding. And eventually, it will cost us dearly to keep up this insane pace of military spending.

That's a whole other can of worms I was trying to avoid, though I completely agree. And it's probably the most difficult problem to solve in our government, because the people making the decisions on whether/how to do so are among those profiting. Based on the assumption that we're never going to cut that rot out, our options are to spend money or to keep cutting. If we want to cut, we have to make corresponding changes to requirements/commitments. Edit: We shot down an Amazon-purchased drone with a Patriot this week ffs.
