the stone age sucked poo poo but the white mans burden was a paper thin veneer for stealing peoples land and treating them like farm animals in 99% of cases and in the very few instances where eg missionaries were actually genuinely primarily concerned with the well being of indigenous populations it was mostly because they thought of them as children

colonialism didnt have exclusively negative outcomes for the exploited peoples but that is pretty much incidental to the actual goals of the vast vast majority of people doing the exploitation

Isolation from the crucible of European enlightenment and the cultural legacy of the Greeks/Romans doesn't make people from other cultures stupid, it makes them deprived by circumstance. Again, I'd suggest doing some reading on Australian Aboriginal life in particular before entertaining the claim that the modern descendants of native Australians would be better off if the British had never arrived. They skipped most of recorded history, and went from spears to the modern world in around two centuries.

You're missing my point here which is most of the people colonized by Europeans were not stone age aborigines. Advanced civilizations existed before Greece/Rome and they existed independent of Greece/Rome after they were already a thing as well. China, for example.

I'm otherwise aware that tribal groups meeting modern humans were rapidly advanced technologically.

what im saying is it wasn't a tough beginning because of the severe culture clash its been a tough 400 years for the aboriginals because white australians are racist as poo poo and treat them like crap. To this day. That's still the legacy of colonialism. Now instead of dying at 35 from rotted out teeth they get to die at 53 of cirrhosis of the liver. Thank God for the British Empire!

Even in the nations with terrible poverty things like infant mortality is down, life expectancy is up, literacy is higher, and people have access to things they never would have were it not for the global linking of markets and societies done during colonialism. You can point to small groups or individuals who are getting the shaft, but humans as a whole across the globe are benefitting from the systems colonialism put in place. Globalism itself is the evolved version of it, and the third world is undoubtedly currently benefitting in many ways from that system right now. The third world is actually out-populating the first world at a fast rate and it's totally because of the legacy of colonialism.

Counterexample: Japan. They managed to mostly resist the worst of colonialism by 1) being really far away 2) only being a couple hundred years behind technologically rather than a thousand 3) fighting back as much as possible and 4) having a much richer neighbor (China) to take the heat off them a bit. Sure they turned themselves into colonizers who were just as bad as the people they were imitating, but they did that themselves.

Japan has all those good things today. Humans all around the globe aren't benefiting from colonialism, they're benefiting from technology and modernity. Those things aren't a product of colonialism and you don't have to be a colony or ex-colony to get them. This isn't Civ, when people invent things you don't have to trade 1000 golds and 2 coastal cities to acquire the secrets of Pottery or Democracy.

(OTOH the very worst thing that generally gets put in the "colonialism = bad" bucket is the spread of diseases that killed millions, but that was gonna happen no matter what. The peoples of the Americas were gonna get hosed by smallpox, the only way that could have been prevented was for America to somehow remain undiscovered all the way up until semi-modern medicine. Not likely.)

There's a reason technology and modernity as we know it ascended along with colonialism. The combination of exploration and discovery buttressed by shitloads of exploited resources created a new class of people in Western society with more free time on their hands that enabled the enlightenment.

Most societies throughout history achieved their peak of achievement alongside some seriously lovely exploitation of their neighbors. Japan, China, Greece, Rome, England, the US. The list goes on and on. Hopefully we're working on a better way but for thousands of years conflict and exploitation was unfortunately the path to significant advancement.

I think that casual relationship is a lot less solid than you're making it. "It happened this way, therefore it could only have happened this way." What is it exactly about the steam engine is impossible to do without colonialism?

There's just a good a case for it to go in the opposite direction: cultures that are coming up with a lot of good & powerful new ideas use them to dominate their neighbors. Which sucks, and means that white people are not uniquely bad for doing all that colonialism. But it still isn't a great defense of colonialism itself.
