It’s illustrative of the though processes of rentacops.

You know, like why they might tussle with people over $5 worth of merchandise.

Also a sudden uptick 'up to six figures' worth of theft right during a week-long unpaid vacation is treated to a begging phone call or two and not outright dismissal of Loss Prevention and restaffing them with an outside party on a permanent basis. Or a possible police investigation since the storyteller smugly lies about his location during this time. "So sir, why are you not 'eight hours away' but still at home?"

It's amusing but the reality is if they were going to save money they wouldn't even bother with a week-long vacation, they would just fire them all outright and bring in a private security force that may or may not be there all the time.

I worked for a regional electronics chain for several years that didn't gently caress around when it came to shoplifters. They had about 6 guys and they detained everyone who left the store with merchandise, even following them to their cars sometimes. Anything over $600 was charged with a felony. Our biggest demographic was old guys stealing porn DVDs.

For some Schadenfreude content: one of our LP officers got fired for taking opened DVDs recovered from shoplifters, using the company computer to copy them using pirated DVD copying software and then burning them onto new DVDs.

One of the delivery guys also got fired for selling the old appliances they picked up from deliveries to an appliance shop.

I liked DA:O too, but mostly it was because I missed Infinity Engine games. Bioware took a dump all over the one thing that made DA:O decent when they released DA2.

I imagine it more EA's demonic touch than Bioware. Nine month development cycle, wtf.

Why on Earth would a Gryphon need a gun?

Look at his puny wings. No way they are big enough to lift that much meat, so he can't actually fly. Unless he has super light bird bones, in which case any human can pretty much break his wrists at will with their meaty monkey paws. If he can fly he's fragile as gently caress, but he probably can't fly.

The claws on his hands look pretty dangerous, but since he is capable of using tools like a monkey, they clearly have human musculature not raptor or lion musculature, and won't be that great in a fight -- more like brass knuckles than claws.

He needs the gun. He has to protect himself from all the people who want to harvest his body parts for magical components or trophies. The six shooter is a pretty dumb choice though. It's going to take him forever to reload that thing with his ridiculous fingers.

Yes, that's correct. They can apprehend you to prevent you from fleeing the scene or disposing of evidence, but only a cop can perform a search. The one exception is if they have reason to suspect you may have a weapon, in which case they are allowed to search for the weapon.

I'm in California, but I wouldn't be surprised if this standard applies to most states in the US.

I'll give them time over mine with retail management (I had maybe 5 years), but the way we handled shrink at our location was by cutting petty spending and trying to schedule more hours on "greeting clients." That means just a random employee standing at the front of the store greeting people. Obviously this cut down theft by 10000% because it worked in a control store in the suburbs for two weeks. Honestly, we looked at theft as a joke in my old store. We weren't allowed to actively stop it, and we weren't allowed to staff against it.

The best part was when our CEO visited Chicago and decided to swing in to our branch downtown and got greeted by one person with absolutely no one else even remotely around and then asked me why we had no one staffed at our "flag ship branch" and I got to say that we only had 30 hours of coverage slated for that day and I was taking up 15 of them. No response to that one, but I sure got an earful the next week.
