My bets on spoilers: 1: You died in the first mission and uploading SAM into you or whatever kept your brain functions going, but really it's SAM who thinks it's you, a sort of fourth-wall breaking reference to the fact that Ryder is controlled by the player 2: The ancient alien civilisation is actually you, and at the end of the game you'll go back in time, fulfilling a time loop and sending arc ships back to the Milky Way and it turns out that all the humans and aliens are the descendants of the characters in this game 3: Actually wait the evil aliens are you from the future, and they're trying to stop you doing whatever they did to become monsters 4: SAM is Reaper Tech, and the reason it can access the ruins is because they're Reaper sleeper cells 5: Dad Ryder survived and is evil

Didn't most people loving hate Geralt and want to deal with him as little as possible?

The guy in that game is visibly a mutant monster fucker, while this game stars some brain damaged kid. The sidequests were also good in that game and revolved around you (or another Witcher) doing an established job. No one goes "thanks god, it's THE WITCHER".

Actually, a major feature of the witcher setting is that you're treated with mistrust and suspicion by random people constantly. Somebody might say thanks or whatever after you kill a monster for them but you're basically a useful freak who is often strongly encouraged to mosey along after all the butchery is done. The witcher is probably the single worst example you could have picked out of modern RPGs for this reason

Geralt is the most famous member with world-wide renown of a select group of superhuman individuals who are very good at their job, namely killing things. John Shepard is an all-round badass who is basically a human celebrity who can break the law with no real oversight. Ryder is... some dude, I guess, who gets a shiny Chief Explorer badge.

monster on a stick posted:ME1 was the first modern RPG I played, and I remember walking out of Spectre induction and wondering why everyone was saying "COMMANDER SHEPARD, I NEED YOUR HELP" and "SPECTRE, THIS WAY" and whatever. You've got the Indian guy who wants his wife's body back, the crime boss lady who wants to take out the competition, Emily Wong waves you down multiple times, that's not to mention all the people who are all but yelling "GOSH I SURE NEED HELP TOO BAD THERE'S NOBODY AROUND" like Admiral Kahoku, the Elcor ambassador who has issues with the Consort, the maintenance people on Feros, etc. You are conflating two different things. I expect to get fetch quests because it's an RPG. What I don't expect is everyone squirting at me and begging to suck my dick because I'm the PATHFINDER. It's a completely stupid turn of events and holy poo poo you think out of 100,000 people specially selected for the initiative there might be a few people who know what they're doing. Instead, you find the Nexus and it's got the lights off and everyone sitting around with their thumbs in their asses waiting for the magical player character to teach them how to tie their shoes. It's by far the dumbest conceit I've ever seen in a Bioware game and I can't imagine why they thought it was a good idea. The only way Mass Effect is saved at this point is if there's a post credits scene where the Normandy emerges from dark space and a Haggard Shepard appears to tell Ryder "we have to go back... To the Milky Way!"

My prediction is that Sara Ryder got brain damage from the cryosleep and the game all takes place in her head.

The sliding-into-view bit for "you're looking at him" is still hilariously dumb.
