MysticalMachineGun posted:The nerd boner for nuclear power mystifies me. Chatting to some guys at work about nuclear vs renewables, I raised an article I read ages ago that it would take 20 years for nuclear to be viable in Australia, but renewables are ready now. And they kept saying that nuclear would improve its technology but "there's no guarantee that renewables will get more efficient" and it's like, gently caress, engineers are working on both, what's the difference? It is also going to be twenty years until a large scale renewable projects is politically viable. I don't think time is a good argument when this thread (and John Howard) were arguing about nuclear and renewable projects a decade ago. A better argument is money, but the government makes terrible funding decisions all of the time. I don't think they will be able to convince the public to spend 10+bn on it though. At this point in time I prefer any action that will transition us away from coal, over no action. As long as it is new scientific funding, a nuclear program is not the worst way to spend money. The major capital investments are a decade into the future, and you don't even need to commit yourself to building the reactors. It is an insurance policy. The larger benefit is that you are creating work in a field where there is not a lot of work to go around. Again, I would prefer them to invest a billion dollars into a large scale renewables project, but that is not even on the cards. In an ideal world the government would already be making sufficient investments into renewables, science, engineering, and infrastructure. Schlesische posted:And then you have all the neckbeards who will go BUT IN 20 YEARS CHINA WILL HAVE (testing stage) FUSION. Not even an argument worth considering. It is more like twenty years to know how commercialisable the technology even is. The reactors that are currently being planned are an experiment. How well it will translate to a commercial power generator remains to be seen.

freebooter posted:I think it's because a lot of people who are traditionally against nuclear power were against it for the same idiotic ideological reasons that our current mob are now ideologically devoted to coal. Chernobyl, radioactive waste, etc. Also because if you actually are pro-science and pro-facts then, yeah, on the face of it it seems insane for nuclear to be ruled out in the age of climate change when we desperately need to stop using fossil fuels. France is like 85% carbon neutral because they use so much nuclear. I think this is fairly on the money. I remember as an undergraduate engineering student I was pretty hostile towards what I perceived then as anti-science hippies, which is where much of the anti-nuclear stuff felt like it was coming from. Now, I'd have no problem with some money going towards the development of nuclear technology, but honestly if you've got even a moderate depth of knowledge on the topic it is really clearly not going to solve the current problem, and is an inferior approach to renewables. There are simply not enough foundries capable of forging reactor housings, not enough people with the requisite knowledge and training, etc etc, for nuclear to play anything but a cameo role in addressing power supply issues. Renewables face almost none of these barriers; distributed manufacturing is possible, the required knowledge base is easier to acquire, there are no issues with waste storage/transport, etc. So I think it's accurate to think that part of the support for nuclear comes out of a sort of knee-jerk reaction to the fact that the strongest anti-nuclear people are often broadly perceived as anti-science, coupled with the tendency of people to think that they're more informed than they actually are: I felt (fifteen years ago) that my better understanding of the physical world meant I understood the cost-benefit of nuclear power better than the people opposed to it. It's a case of a little knowledge being a dangerous thing, as I actually new far less about the total problem than I thought I did.

Wasn't there a row a few years ago from some NIMBYs who found out that spent nuclear fuel was going to be transported by road nearby? Unless they plan on storing spent fuel in country they'll need to get it to a port somehow which will undoubtedly piss the same dinguses off.

The row was in regards to spent fuel from France that was returning. It had been enriched in Australia at Lucas Heights and part of the sale condition was that we would store it.

The current government doesn't give a poo poo about either and renewables have labor/greens/a reasonable proportion of the public behind them. It isn't. The reason why the issue got bought up is because some members of the LNP are agitating for it, and was remarked upon by Turnbull. Public opinion on the matter isn't insurmountable, and having an up to date study on all of the facets of building and operating a plant would go a long way to secure that support. It is the sort of thing the government should be funding anyway. Money is the real issue, and even that can be overcome under certain conditions. One of which is not having the peaking gas/storage to cover intermittent supply/demand.
