It's pretty bare bones but I think it has potential. It either needs a pre-war period so you can get a design tree going or random starting technology so you can try out the clown car of doom.

I've spent far more on shittier games.

I just fought a full war. 50 cities, 4 factions.

Took me 3 hours.

Seems like every country has boiler plate units which can be countered. Like RED had a 2 tank/2 inf mix with a super light tank. And Yellow had a ton of infantry but like no tanks. Green had a ton of infantry and artillery and super armored tanks but small guns etc...

I went through several designs.

1. Warlord tank: 60 ton monster with 100mm AT gun and 130/100/80 armor. Was all around decent but still took a lot of casualties relative to production. Had my whole country geared toward making Warlords and was churning out like 30/month. All around ok tank.

2. Mjolnir: My siege tank. 100mm infantry gun and 150/120/105 armor. Walked on 4 legs. Through that guy into an all infantry Battalion to siege cities down. Broke through defenses like butter.

3. T-34-85: Literally tried to recreate the T-34-85. 80mm gun, like 100/80/60 armor with a V10 engine. Literally the best tank I made the whole game. Took less than 100 losses I'd wager, but killed hundreds of enemy tanks while maintaining excellent speed and by endgame was popping out something like 50/month. Probably wiped out over 20 divisions, and I only had like 4 full strength Battalions of these guys by endgame.

Ended up being 15 in-game years, taking something like 10k tank casualties and 50k infantry casualties to 50k enemy tank casualties and 100k enemy infantry.

Dudes,

I'm getting my rear end kicked on mission 3 of CMANO:NI, "The Fast and the Furious".

I'm trying to be a good NATO commander and keep a chopper out there spotting Osa boats, but my dudes are outranged by the Styx missile (by like 10 nm?!) and basically I lose a shitload of my boats if I try to deal with the missile ships first. If I try to go for the amphibious landing ships first, they manage to make it to the cover of the missile boats by the time my 'fleet' is assembled, then the Soviets just dump missiles into my poo poo until everyone is dead. Also somehow a Hind always shows up and vomits missiles into my torpedo boats with impunity? Basically I don't know what the gently caress I'm doing.

How do I get my torpedo boats in range of the transports without them getting vaporized?
What role are the aircraft supposed to play in this mission? Should I save them entirely for striking the landing ships?
Why won't my frigates do...anything? Should I authorize them to use SAMs in an ASuW role?

It's one thing to dunk on Soviet subs with 20 kT nukes, but this? This is a nightmare.

It's been awhile since I played this, but if I recall correctly you should use your planes against the Osas, as they don't have poo poo for anti-air weaponry. Then use your torpedo boats to attack to larger enemy escorts (you will lose most of your guys) while simultaneously closing with your frigates guns blasting. By microing your planes and flying at min altitude, you can stay low enough to avoid enemy SAMs, popping up long enough to drop bombs on the transports then immediately hitting the deck again.

Don't be afraid to use your speed to run from the enemy and engage at the time and place of your choosing. That also gives time for your planes to rearm.

I just did this mission a few days ago.

I used my PT boats to clear the Soviet PT boats. Almost all of my PT boats died, but so did most of the Soviets. Then I kept my chopper close enough to get visual on the invasion fleet, but not close enough to eat AA rounds. At that point I filled missions with my aircraft and just bombed the landing craft. My frigates didn't do gently caress all.

Now I'm stuck in the next scenario trying to hunt the Soviet nuke subs. This is driving me crazy. I've been at it for three days and I haven't killed a single one.

edit : Just beat it, kind of felt cheap. I went active sonar for a minute and pinged a Delta. A minute later we had a nuclear torp on top of it.

Am I supposed to go active on occasion? I kind of expected it to be all silent running.

edit 2 : Sweet Jesus. Beware of the Badger is loving crazy. It's all the cold war awesomeness I've been craving.

Ultimate General taught me that there wouldn't have been a Civil War had I been in charge because: A I smoked the South at Bull Run and B: there were over 30,000 combined casualties. My takeaway is that the engine is fun but still seems way more geared to just Gettysburg. A few hours of Bull Run hitting 30k seems way, way off.

That's wargames in general, though. It's way way easier to engage the enemy in Ultimate General than in real life. A lot of the troops at the battle never really got to do anything. Nobody had an overview of the battle where they could immediately see a weakness in the enemy line.

Either way, it starts to break down by the mid-war battles. I've watched LPs of Antietam and Gettysburg where the Confederate player inflicts 90k+ losses on the Union, which is 1) absurdly ahistorical in terms of casualty figures and, relatedly 2) would have probably immediately ended the war/gotten Lincoln impeached/triggered foreign intervention

Happens in wargames without carefully thought out limits on force concentration. Like in WITP the concentration of force and operational tempo is far beyond what was possible in real life because if you split your forces you stand a good chance of the other player bushwhacking your carriers or some other irreplaceable asset so it's nearly always the correct play to keep them together 100% of the time. Also everyone knows what happened at Midway...

Also the player represents the single undivided will of what in reality was a plethora of agents with their own agendas, also the player is far more willing to accept casualties and a high rate of attrition in exchange for a greater victory because it's not real people.

The only operational/tactical level wargame I've played with realistic casualty figures is Pike and Shot and even then it sorta cheats by instantly ending battles after an arbitrary routing unit limit and then simulating casualties for retreating units still on the field.

NWO2 is a valiant attempt to extend the game beyond the time period that it was really designed for, but IIRC the actual WW2 gameplay isn't changed or improved all that noticeably. Kaiserreich is fun, of course, but I've not tried TRP. Might give it a shot.

I'll be trying out the Yankee Team and Good Morning Malvinas scenarios in real time over Easter holidays, streaming both as I did my real-time Silent Hunter 3 playthrough. It'll be an interesting stress test of both me and the game! CMANO and Command Ops are the only games that I feel really get me in the shoes of a commander, not "The Country" or "The Military" or "The Ship", and both in very different and interesting ways. Are there any other good 12-24hr scenarios that I should try out too?
