Leivo could easily take Hyman's spot, even on LW. Hyman's already a RW playing on his off wing so why not give him a shot? Move Hyman to 4th line RW where he belongs and sit Soshnikov for a bit.

I'm not convinced that Leivo-Matthews-Marner and JVR-Bozak-Brown wouldn't work. Or hell, put Nylander with Bozak if they can't survive without a good skater/puckhandler. Kadri does fine stapled to Komarov anyway.

People mention that I went undrafted, sometimes, as shorthand for my underdog path to the NHL. But the truth is, a lot of guys go undrafted. That’s not even the full picture.

Here’s the full picture: When I got my shot with the Canucks in 2006 … I was still only a few years removed from calling my mom, crying — because I had just been traded to a team (in the hockey hotbed of Baton Rouge) that was literally going out of business. I was still only a couple of years removed from thinking seriously about returning to school — and just calling it quits altogether. And I was still only a single year removed from bouncing around between the AHL and ECHL — I even have my own “I had a plane ticket booked to head back down a level, before the coach liked what he saw and told me to stick around a few more days” story to prove it.

So, you have to understand: When I got called up to Vancouver, I wasn’t just undrafted. I was un-everything.

Yep, Stephane Auger. The NHL officially denied any wrongdoing on Auger's part but he mysteriously "retired" two seasons later for basically no reason (and about 10 years younger than most refs retire).

The Habs can totally trade this disrespectful player to the Leafs for the totally respectful Matt Hunwick.

Hyman is an actually ok PKer iirc, which is something. I don't think he should sit, just that he's over his head the way the team is currently constructed.

The elephant in the room when talking about the Leafs roster is always going to be Matt freakin Martin. Pretty crazy how a deal like that ripples through the entire team.

He scored a goal last game so he's immune to criticism for the rest of the season. Also hits. We know nothing's going to happen to him until a new, younger, smarter GM gets hired so whatever.

Actually, since Boyle came along, the 4th line has been running about ~60% CF%, so they're no longer a massive liability, although I assume they're still heavily sheltered.

The Habs have too many defensemen and are literally running a rotation to figure out who they want to play. Beaulieu should never have been press boxed, and it led to a return of quite possibly the worst 2nd pairing d-combo in the League in Petry-Emelin.

I wish I could I was joking, but the Habs lost largely on the back of goals where Emelin drifted over to Petry's side and let a man go free.

Boyle's been great all things considered, but just about anyone would have made an impact over Smith.

Point still stands, Martin's presence means someone better than him is sitting regardless of the situation, which has ramifications throughout every line when you've got guys like Hyman/Sosh and Komarov needing spots too.

I'm a little concerned about Lou, this is going to be a really important offseason for the team. Even if he can bring himself to part with Polak I'm not certain that he won't just replace him with some equivalent. Last summer was not encouraging, and I don't think he or Babs are going to quit with their insistence on role players until someone makes them.

A Typical Goon

Hymen has 22 even strength points which doesn't look good when you look at his linemates who have 55 points and 50 points respectively, but that starts to make more sense when you realize Matthews has only 37 even strength points and Nylander 27 at even strength. I don't think he's dragging that line down as much as people claim he is, his linemates are only outscoring him by so much because of the amazing powerplay production that they've gotten on the year

Koopa Kid
Aug 21, 2007

Hyman has 3 ES points total in his last 24 games, he's utterly dependent on Matthews making things happen for him and is a black hole when he fades, which is why we're talking about him now. Matthews wouldn't have a scoring drought if Hyman was a competent offensive player.

A Typical Goon
Feb 25, 2011
Matthews to me doesn't seem like the type of player that really requires anyone else to produce offense. Maybe it's from always being far and away the best player on the ice during his development years but his style really seem to be more 'selfish' than I was anticipating from the scouting reports.

I think he'll end up being a player like Crosby, who can drive a line by himself and only gets a slight boost by playing with players that on paper should be large upgrades.

Marner is kind of like the exact opposite, where I don't feel he'd produce much at all with scrubs on his line, but with talented linemates he can really bring the offence.

Koopa Kid
Aug 21, 2007

Don't get me wrong, the whole reason the Leafs are doing as well as they are this season is you can basically throw anyone half-decent on Matthews' line and have them look like a legitimate threat, or at the very least a plus-possession line.

But it's not apparent yet whether or not Hyman is above replacement in that scenario, they've literally never been apart at ES, and the team's recent struggles are leading me to lean against him.

I think it's likely that people were overrating Hyman, and while I don't think replacing him with someone else would jump Matthews 20 points I do think the line and team as a whole would benefit from someone more suited to playing offence in that slot.

I think talent with him would be a big upgrade, unlike your Crosby example. There's so many times I see him shift to the slot only to have no one be able to deliver to him.
