Which I'm guessing happens but obviously not a lot.

Pretty much, although clean and clear lenses, good bulbs, and proper aim go a long way. Meguiar's plasticx works really well for something you just rub on with a towel. After clearing the lenses, putting in sylvania xtravisions, and getting them pointed the right way I find the lights on my 98 Subaru acceptable. But an HID projector just puts out way more light in a much better pattern; it's something like 3x the light compared to a 55w halogen. Newer halogen projectors are pretty decent though. My mom's new forester just has halogens and they work very well.

My car previous to the 4 I mentioned above was a 2008 FJ Cruiser that definitely didn't have projectors or anything else fancy and its light output never bothered me. So I'm not totally sure if I just got used to better lights, or if regular Ford halogens are just exceptionally lovely. I suspect it's a bit of both. I remember there was a guy on a Mustang forum that I used to post on and he had the base lights on a ~2011 and it basically gave him mental illness. Multiple threads about how lovely the headlights were and then multiple threads about how he paid a dealership to upgrade his lights to the factory projectors/HIDs(?) and he was still having problems with them and yadda yadda yadda.

Huh, I have a 2015 F150 with the base halogens. I totally agree that the stock lights & bulbs are basically unsafe / dangerous. I have some 8000 lumen LED bulbs for them on the way. If I can get them aligned and aimed so that I'm not blinding oncoming traffic then I'll be incredibly happy. If not, might have to look into some aftermarket projector housings. Pictures and report incoming when the bulbs show up regardless.

I got stuck "closing" the bar tonight, but a local pub crawl stole all of our regulars and I got to leave 4 hours early. My girlfriend and almost all of my friends are in boystown dancing, and the rest of my friends are working still. The first St. Paddy's I've ever got out of work early enough to enjoy and I have no one other than 2 dogs to celebrate with. Certainly not DOT legal, but if the original housing had a clear lens, and you take the time to aim them properly, I can see that working well. Swap the originals back for inspection time, if your state does that. I'll admit to having considered such a swap strongly, the major tipping point is it would cost a bit more to add high beams (since my stock headlamps use a single bulb for both - I guess high beams on a single bulb setup involves a shutter or tilting the bulb itself?). If it's something with a dual filament single bulb, I fully agree. You make a lot of compromises designing those housings. My Saturn is this way, and the headlights go from "am I on the correct side of the road?" to "I can sort of see a lane marker 100 ft ahead". My 2001 Accord? "wow these are pretty decent, I can see pretty far with the high beams on when I'm on back r*deer runs into side of car*" (this really did happen  )Mom's Toyota Avalon? Size and shape of the beam is much more important than how many lumens you can throw at the road. After a certain point, all you do is increase the self blinding. Just invest in some good extra lights.

Trust me, if there was a good H4 or equivalent LED replacement for less than $100/bulb, I'd be on it like a monkey on a cupcake. I'm the bigclivedotcom of AI. I've spent (as in, money) my entire late childhood and young adult life on LED bulbs and drivers (stock, chinesium, and custom). I long for LED supremacy. Every single gift to my father was an LED flashlight, from before the days that even eBay sold them. I was making driver circuits from before my neice existed. From before Alibaba/AliExpress were even things. My cars, and motorcycles, are so old that converting the headlamp to LED would double the generator output availability. It's been a dream of mine. If you see a standard 7inch housing on eBay, "halo" ring or not, I've tried it. If you've seen an LED H4 (or equivalent) bulb, direct or sub-reflector, I've most likely tried it. I have my own standard of testing bulb pattern, at 10 feet and at 200 feet (work facility), that I compare with. In the "post your first Amazon purchase" thread, I saw that I'd bought $16,000 wortg of stuff from Amazon since 2005. I bet I've spent nearly that much on LED poo poo from eBay and Alibaba alone in the same timeframe. LED is life LED is love

I'm in Louisville till Tuesday. Celebrating my aniversary with my wife. Anyone have any good recommendations? Just did the Louisville slugger tour. Was awesome due to an amazing tour guide. Also this city feels tiny compared to Chicago but still a bigish city.
