COACH TOTORO SAY REFEREE CAN BANISH WHISTLE TO LAND OF WIND AND GHOSTS!
Was at monthly FP club meeting last night, topic was ground or modified nibs. Somebody had a Lamy 2000 that they ground all of the tipping material off of and turned in to a stub.

Meldonox posted:

I haven't bought a new pen or ink in a while. I've been writing more and more at work and could justify a fancier purchase. Anybody got anything you really like that would fall in a range maybe somewhere between my TWSBI and my Falcon?

Also I'm in the market for a pretty saturated bluish violet. I've been using hexcode #420DAD (god help me) in a project and I'm pretty partial to it. Any suggestions?

Private Reserve Tanzanite might work.

Is there a good listing of pens based on nib? Like, if I care more about the writing than the body, I can buy a Safari and know what a Lamy Logo writes like (which I did). I want to try different pen nibs out without dropping 40+ bucks on an expensive pen. Where do I look that poo poo up? I'm still on the lookout for something smooth yet fine, and not scratchy.

It might be easier to go to a pen store and write with all of them. A company's premier nib will usually be paired with their premier pens.

Edit: reading your post again, look up reviews. For example, pilot nibs usually give a smoother experience than a [insert name of company I can't think of] that gives more feedback.

The closest thing to what you're asking for is the Nib Nook on Goulet Pens, as far as I'm aware.

Man what a great resource. Should order something from them to see how it goes. Heard only good things and I need a ink that's backordered on wonderpens. Sherwood green by Diamine.

You guys are not joking about nib sizes. Comparing my future lamy 2000 fine to pilot metros in fine and med (both I own) the lamy 2000 fine is much wider than them wow. It's like clothing sizes!

Pilots write more like a ballpoint or a rollerball in terms of line width and Lamys write more like a fine felt tip sharpie. In my experience.

What cheapass pilot pen bracket can I look at that shares the same nibs as a higher pen bracket and what are those brackets? I have been hearing good stuff about Pilot pens everywhere but I thought the nib in the Metropolitan I used was good but not great.

edit: Maybe I should just get something that uses a #6

the #6 Goulet nibs are nice, I have a couple of the italic ones and they're quite smooth and you can jam them into an Ahab or Konrad and have something that writes way nicer than the Noodler's flex nib, and if you want to play around with different widths you only have to pay for more nibs vs getting a whole pen

you might look at the pens at Fountain Pen Revolution as well -- they're pretty inexpensive, like $20 or less, and come in a variety of nib sizes and styles so you can do the same thing -- get one pen and a bunch of nibs to swap into it to see what you like.

Pretty sure the Prera uses the same steel nib as the metro/kakunos. Except for the demos, those get italics I think? Either way, should be the same as whatever Pilot's cheap italic pen is. Plumix? Penmanship? One of those.

Either way, nib-wise it's the same as the metro. But the Prera is a pretty nice pen, especially at the JP price rather than the US MSRP.

If you want to play nib legos I think you can fit nibs from an m400 in a m2xx, and then the m600–1000 use the same nib unit? But that's a) Pelikan b) $$$$

I know Richard Binder's site used to have a compatibility chart, though. Donno if that's still up since he's retired, though.

The M60x, M80x, and M100x all use different nib units. Which makes sense because the pens have such different sizes. However, the M60x nib units will fit the 600/400/200.

Well I went and ordered the Copper Orange Lamy Al-Star based on the recommendations in this thread, it will sit in a box until my birthday in a few months, orange is my favorite color and I was worried it would sell out. I suspect in a few months that I will also end up ordering a leather pen case from my favorite leather worker to go along with it:

You ordered a pen and you're not going to use it literally as soon as it arrives? Are you... like, feeling okay? Is there something you want to talk about? Can it be solved by another fountain pen?

How unlucky, or dumb, am I? Had just inked the Lamy 2000 and loving dropped it.
Lucky (???) it seems the tines are .01 missaligned. I own a jewelers loupe and the right thine is yeah a tiny bit lower.

SO I rush ordered brass sheets from wonder pens and will delicately attempt to crrect this. The pen still writes it just got scratchy a lot. I am optimistic the nib has no cracks or damage just missaligned...

Still hate my guts wow.

edit: I WILL be practicing on my Jinhao's before attempting the Lamy. I'm dumb but not THAT dumb.. Or am I?

edit: sending off to a nibmeister or getting a replacement is out for the moment. With the Kaweko, shipping and duties I paid enough for this pen as is. I'm sure I can fix it. Or destroy the fucker trying.

Sorry Best Bale!!

edit2: surely this is pure madness on a gold nib? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8cuKrDmvrHQ

Eh, I'm planning on using it as a Beater Pen, and while I really like the bold color, I'm not excited enough for it that I'll need to rip it open as soon as it gets in.

I emailed Lamy and asked about any future orange pens, they said they have no plans to add the color to their regular line up, which didn't really answer my question but

Wow! After watching more videos and reading up on it I decided what the hell let's ruin the nib!
Well I went at it and straightened the tines pretty quickly. The material is very soft and it takes only the tiniest of force to make changes. Basically I started making changes very softly looking thru my loupe between each times. First few times had no changes which was a good thing it meant I was not close at all to "breaks stuff force". Kept going and eventually overshot and the tine was too high. Redid and they got to within 0.005 in level. Not perfect but tons better. 1/10 of the original distance. But now the tines were touching. Not having the brass sheets yet I just took the plastic ones that come with my parallel pens and flossed once and now it's ok.

It writes very well once again. Is a little scratchy in one direction only instead of pretty much all of them.

Very happy! Holy poo poo ! One day I'll bring it to a pen show or a store and I'm sure some pro will tune it to perfection.

I did not disassemble the pen to do this but when I get my brass sheets I might and really get those tines aligned. Frankly it's not difficult you just have to have a very soft touch. Not steady surgeon hands but be able to do small movements.

Indeed! But hey just played around a little bit with it and looking at it with the loupe I can see it's not perfect. But to the use it feels pretty much as good as it was. Just wrote a whole page and had no problems except the occasional skip or hard start because of hand rolling. I get this with also all my pens I roll bad.

I went from happy to sad and back up to happy so it was worth every risk.

I've noticed that with every single one of my Iroshizuku inks. The ink in the feed will dry out just the tiniest bit, no matter how well sealed the pen. When you pick it up after leaving it alone for a couple of days the first few lines will be darker and richer but take a bit longer to dry because they're more dye heavy, then it'll fade back to what you expect.

Part of the entire appeal of the Lamy 2000 is the classic design; there's a reason why it's part of MOMA's collection. Being able to replace the nib yourself would require a different design and that would spoil the pen.

It's worth contacting Lamy directly - they're very good about warranty repairs and will either fix the nib and send it back or just replace the pen outright.

Yes, we're still honoring that price (give or take a couple bucks due to exchange rate issues). You can order at http://musu.bi whenever you're ready.

Custom fabric as in, you supply a fabric and we make it? Or we do a custom print with our makers for a run of diaries? Both are possible though complicated, and in the case of the latter it would have to be a pretty drat sizeable run.

And yes, I'm thankful for your offer. We're focusing this year on stabilising our production and ironing out the kinks but intend to market hard as we go into the holiday season. I'll contact you when we've got our ducks in a row.

Sounds good. I am interested in pitching this as something that we could offer our guests as a "hey you're cool have a sweet-rear end diary" so a themed run of books would be something, but knowing my CFO we'd need a discount that probably wouldn't make it worth it for you unless you want to run a sweatshop. And don't do that! I am primarily interested in just ways to increase traffic to help the disabled. For the custom fabric, maybe we make it and you use it? Or we could possibly source it anyway. I don't know how much of your pricing is based on materials and how much is based on labor though.

Do your books have any kind of special postcard or something in them that explains why it's a good cause, in case someone orders one as a gift? And if I did order it as a gift, I don't know if there's some kind of sweet special Japanese gift wrapping available, but that would increase the coolness of the gift, even if most of the people I'd give the books to would be ignorant of its significance. Like myself, for example, I don't know poo poo about giving gifts in Japan except never give in quantities of 4, and if you take PTO to go on vacation you are obligated to get everyone in your office something roughly equivalent to a fun-size snickers bar.

Kessel
Mar 6, 2007

We absolutely do do corporate order-style runs where clients come to us for a custom run of books, but we have a very limited production capacity of only up to 200 diaries per month. I think we'll be hard pressed to meet your festival-scale needs at that level. As to your question about percentage costs, I can tell you that while we do use pretty expensive fabric and paper - that sweet, sweet Tomoe River is not cheap - a huge percentage of our price goes towards labour.

We currently deliver the diaries as is, with a small handwritten note and shop card, while we prototype our branding and packaging. Our final packaging is scheduled to come online around May, and will include a special envelope/postcard explaining the cause behind our work. I can also safely say that we'll pour the same obsessive level of quality into our packaging as we do our diaries - it's clear to me that people are buying these as gifts and so our diaries will be delivered in a presentation box with all the bells and whistles you'd expect.

It's a lot of words about what is essentially a disposable product, but by god my artisans and I are committed to delivering the craziest, most beautiful book you'll ever own. We know full well that anything less than perfect will only reinforce the stereotypes people hold of the physically disabled.

Indeed it was! Got lucky too I could of ruined the nib I stopped the fall and juggled with it in the end it hit from half a foot high. Still a ton for this nib but it looks a little weird still but feels completely fine now. A nibmeister would probably make short work of it but I have almost all the tools so I'll probably "fix it" for good one day when I get more experienced. As is it works fine so I won't risk ruining it.

Anyways when I get the brass sheets I should get it even a nice that might just get it back to perfect.
