This week's downloadable bonus item for Dragon Quest 8 (3DS) is available in the USA now. At least I was able to grab it just a bit ago. It's Ye Olde Sword of Erdrick, which is just a plain ol' weapon with 20 attack. If you drop it into the Alchemy Pot with a Liquid Metal Sword and some Orichalcum, it upgrades to a version with 120 attack and the ability to cast (a surprisingly weak) Zap when used as an item.

Can anyone besides Hero equip it?

So a few weeks ago my wife asked me why I say I like Dragon Quest all the time (III in this case) but never asked her if she wanted to play it. So I told her she could try my copy of the Dragon Quest III remake, and told her it was okay if it was too old or grindy for her.

She's now a single item away from making the bridge to Zoma's Castle! I was pretty shocked to find how much easier it was for her to get into than Chrono Trigger, but I think it's because the game doesn't really assume a lot about what you know about RPGs, and also because she felt attached to the party she put together herself. It being purely turn based with no ATB elements probably helped too.

I was very happy to see DQ III is a lot more beginner friendly than I expected.

Well I thought it would feel too slow and subdued compared to how flashy and fast-paced Chrono Trigger is, but apparently that was not the case!

Hero can use it, of course, but it's still not as good as the Über Falcon Blade in most situations.

Angelo can't equip it.

A sword-skilled Red can equip it, making it her best blade, and her the best person to use it.

That probably means Jessica could use it too, but I can't test that, since I didn't put any points into her knife skill. (I keep her either unarmed for the dodge bonus in most fights, or holding a staff for the MP bonus if I expect I'll be using Magic Burst.)

Dragon Quest 7's silly accents are amazing. The entire game is not nessasrly any good for anyone who doesn't want 80 hours of saving villages and 60 hours of Maribel sniping at them (it's me, I wanted all of those things).

On the topic of accents, something interesting I found in the SFC version of DQ3 is that even though all the places in the first world are still obvious references to other countries and cultures (e.g. Baharata, Isis), they don't speak with difference accents as in the English version. However, the flea market salesmen who haggle with you in Isis do speak broken Japanese! I'm not really sure where those guys are supposed to be from in the DQ world, but I'm guessing they're a reference to small, immigrant-owned businesses in Japan that sell incredibly expensive merchandise you usually have to haggle down.

Whoever designed the dq8 boss rush dungeon is a piece of poo poo. I got all the way to Marcelo but he gets three attacks per round and pretty much always killls 2-3 people per turn, so it's hard to do anything except revive people and do no damage to him. He has every rear end in a top hat move: kathwack, disruptive wave, fizzle, and solo attacks that crit more often than not.

I'm in the high 70s for levels and the only solution is to grind more, so gently caress that.

Red with her final knife skill will generally melt them fast if she has something like the metal king sword equipped and something for speed up. Still probably need them to stay at least one turn through.

Ah I don't have Red yet. Just recently got to where I can do the quest with the twins fighting over inheritance, can I get her soon? Also is it worth it to go back and do a lot of the photography quests I missed?

I finished DQ5 for the first time a couple of months ago, and I... didn't really like it that much? I liked the flexibility in being able to use monsters in your party, but it seemed like it took less strategy to kill enemies than in previous games, it wasn't really until the final dungeon / boss that I had to actually strategize and buff characters / sap enemies and stuff like that rather than just making every character Attack and beat the enemy's face in.
I really didn't care for the story either, it's just pretty much The Story Of Your lovely Life From Birth because your dad becomes a hobo and travels the world looking for your mom, then his lovely dad skills lead to him being murdered in front of you and your growing up in slavery, then it's up to you to carry on your dad's lovely quest which leaves you as a living statue for 10 years while your own kids grow up without parents, then you finally find your mom only for her to be murdered in front of you too. Then you kill the bad guy and go home and have a dance.

I have yet to play 6, 7, or anything after 9, but my current personal favorite is 8, followed by 4, 3, and who cares about the rest. I do need to play Rocket Slime though, everything I've seen of it makes it look like I'm really missing out on something there.

I'm not sure how close you are to Red because the Baccarat twins are an optional quest, but she'll shove her way into your party eventually. Also you should probably do the photography quests. If you keep up with them as they open you can get some good weapons early, but even now there's a few Seeds of Skill, some alchemy stuff, part of a costume for Hero, and both of Red's best armours. the Pirate Armour boosts her steal rate (!) and her Kunoichi Armour raises her agility and I think her evasion.

Been playing the GBC DQIII and oof just got wiped out by Baramos in like 4 rounds. My characters are around 25 and looking at the spell list it seems like you need to be around 32 to have better spells. My team is Fighter / Warrior / Hero / Cleric, I guess if I'm going to be grinding levels for a while I should also finally switch the Cleric to a Sage?

Try the Sleep Staff/Sleep spell (Priest), as well as StopSpell (Hero/Priest). Believe it or not, they actually do work on Baramos.

Thanks for the tips, I actually ended up only leveling to about 27 but got lucky with my spells. StopSpell worked in round 1, then Sleep worked in round 2 and lasted like 5 rounds before he woke up. So even though it took like 15 rounds, I had Surround and Sap and StopSpell on him and the only actual hits the party took were one Explodet, one fire breath, and one physical blow. Most of the rounds he missed with a physical hit.

Pretty close - the Baccarat twins open up post-Dhoulmagus and Red is right before you get the ability to fly so he's like two hours of story away tops.

Personally I think it was amazing. The story was intriguing and enjoyable, it has one of the better class systems I've played (Admittedly I haven't played 5 or 6), and the characters were pretty good.

It's like twice the length of DQ8 and that's not a bad thing. The only part of the game I can honestly say is poo poo is the fact that you have to collect puzzle-piece shards as you progress through the game to unlock the next area, and if you miss a shard you have to go back to previous areas and hunt for it - but of course every previous area has a 'past' and 'present' so you have to hunt the entire world twiceover. The further in the game you get the more areas you have unlocked to hunt for shards and it becomes absolutely godawful. I normally avoid walkthroughs and poo poo but I 100% advocate using a walkthrough to avoid missing any shards.

I have heard people gripe that two party members join you way too late in the game, and by the time you get them it's hard to get them caught up in classes to the others that have been with you almost from the start, and that's a legitimate gripe but I didn't find it hampered me much at all.

The good thing about the 3DS remake is that it added a little hint thing that told you where any shards you could pick up were.

It would have to be during the day because the the twins lock up at night. I have a similar photo (no Jessica :v: ) but I never bothered taking the photo until I was rear end-deep in the postgame, so I don't know when this pose change happens.

Right, that's what I meant by "time within day" - I did try standing outside in their courtyard and time didn't seem to pass there, was hoping I could get locked in with them but no, that's not a thing.

I finally got tired of waiting for Sqeenix to release a PS2 to PS4 version of DQ8 so I broke down and bought a used PS2 from a goon even though I won't get around to playing it for a couple of months. It seems like it's never coming to PS4 and I don't know why. Why don't they want my money? Now that the remake's out, do they have some kind of exclusivity contract or something?

Anyway, I don't remember a character named Red. All I remember is Hero, Yangus, Angelo, and Jessica. I'm guessing she's a new addition to the DS version? Are there any other new characters?

One nice touch I remember is that the Hero's curse imperviousness isn't just a plot element but actually carries over into combat. Enemies can try and try to curse the Hero all day long and it won't do a drat thing.

Edit: One thing I love about this game is that, thanks to the cel-shaded graphics, it still looks amazing on my giant TV. It's also one of the extremely small number of PS2 games that natively support both 480p and widescreen, which is a huge deal. Nearly every other PS2 game has you stuck in 480i and 4:3.

I'm sure there are probably more but the only other PS2 games that I'm aware of that do those things are Shadow of the Colossus and Resident Evil 4. There are a couple of PS2 games that can actually do 1080i but they're EXTREMELY simple games. I think the Atari 2600 collection can do that.

Red was actually in the PS2 game, but she was just a thief from Yangus' past who appeared twice in the plot, first stealing the horse in the thief town and late in the game when dealing with a navigation chart.

Trodain has Liquid Metal Slimes, if you can find a place you like to stand in and rotate the camera to scum spawns. I did actually grind a few levels for the boss at the end of it.

(without spoiling too much, that boss has two phases, with no healing in between, but if you wipe on phase two you start from that phase again the next time you come back and also there's a healing pond right before the boss)
