The Boy and The Beast is a movie that has a really strong first act, a decent second act, and then the third act is really dumb and overly childish. I don't regret watching it but it's def the weakest Hosoda film, no question.

They bring up that Ichirohiko had a lot of anger over being different from the beasts but for the most part they don't really address it much after that. No real attempt at speaking to him during the battle (which is what I'd rather see than an attempt to "absorb his darkness"). That combined with how he loses his memory of everything that happened once he was completely full of darkness made it a pretty unsatisfying resolution to me; in fact I find it outright odd that Ren and Ichirohiko don't really get to have an actual conversation in the second half of the movie! That's something that could have gone a long way for me. I guess at the end I wish the stuff about "darkness inside humans" was less literal. It's a shame since before that conflict was set up I was enjoying the movie a lot. It doesn't bring down the movie so much that I'd never tell someone to watch it, but I'd definitely point them towards the other Hosoda films first.

symphogear gx is definitely the most tokusatsu of the symphogear seasons, the problem is that they only have 13 episodes to execute on it and they waste half of those with just retreading fight scenes. the writer dude (who i refer to mentally as wild arms man so much that i forgot his real name) even pointed this out in an interview, the producers said 'well G was a big improvement sales-wise over S1, so write whatever you want' and the anime staff trusted him at this point, so he just crammed it full of everything he wanted to do because he wasn't sure if they'd get a S4/S5. Which is why the show has to force in dad subplots for both Hibiki and Tsubasa, they're lingering parts of their characters that need to be resolved.

Well, hopefully they're more willing to let things breathe now that they know they've got two cours coming up to fit all their stuff into.
