Talk to me about different types of clay for prop making etc. Is there a difference in the type of clay I would use to lets say sculpt a helmet vs small prop parts I want to attach to other things? The assumption is I'd be making a mold of these and I've heard that low sulfur is important for the silicone to set.

I've been using the cheapest earthen water-based clay I can get (which probably has sulfur in it) and spraying it with a clear coat of sealer spray paint before mold-making. Silicone has set perfectly with that technique! But obviously this could go wrong if you're not careful. Recommendations I got from the guy at the store were-- if you're sculpting something really big/intricate and it's going to take a long time, you might want to use an oil-based clay so it won't dry out over time. Oil based clays are more expensive though. I've been sculpting masks that take about a week and just spraying/bagging them each night and the cheapo earthen clay has worked fine for me. If your sculpt will take longer you might want to consider oil-based. But yes, make sure to buy sulfur-free or seal it with a clear lacquer before making the mold.

I figured I would cross post this from my first ever therpf thread. A little about me and what I am up to! I have been a cosplayer for a while know without knowing it, neat! Every year my little village in rural England holds a carnival. Thousands of people turn out and watch mainly drunken locals parade through the village dressed up! About 5 years ago my father decided to try a big float and we have gone from strength to strength. Having done "cotton eyed joey" (Australia) Harry Potter and Star Wars my small family decided to divert from the main big float (I still help build the big one) but make a small pull along float with our own theme. Last year we did Pokemon Go with home made costumes and had a ball. This year I am stepping it up! The carnival is the end of September but I am hoping to have some costumes done before London Comic Con. My first ever Con. I will be Aragorn, in his king costume as I really want to make foam armour! The mrs will be Legolas, complete with stupidly large bow. My son will be Frodo My daughter will be Gollum Mother in law will be sauromon Sister in law will be Gandalf the grey My brother in law will be witch king of angmar His son will be Gimli A friend will be Boromir and his son will be Sam. There is also the possibility of another friend and his wife but we need to decide who they will be. So thats a LOT of costumes. For Comic Con in May 26th I need Aragorn, Legolas, Frodo, Gimli and the witch king. So lets get on it! This will be a build log with any techniques I find added. I have a 3d printer I will be using for example I will print the wizards staff tops and attach to PVC pipe. This will enable speed and accuracy. Re: LOTR Multiple Costumes with Props WIP Ok so the first thing I have completed is the Witch King's helmet crown thing... I took a paper template and cut it out in cardboard, looked ok so moved up to the lid of an old PC I had laying about. Cut with an angle grinder (this was a pain! Use some sort of saw!) and welded together... I was at PAX East and somehow ended up winning a creepy mask one of the booths had been using to promote their game.  However, it does have a crack on the top (I assume that's the reason they gave it out).  It's pretty well constructed, and looks pretty cool, so I'll definitely be wearing it around Halloween or maybe other cons. What are my options for fixing that crack?

I'm contemplating making some of these glowing bottles for some stuff. The author goes into detail about using glowsticks for the actual glowing part, but only vaguely hints at embedding an LED into the cork for more fluid flexibility. Anyone have any experience with, or can point me to, a good set of pictures on how to get an LED, a battery, and some sort of switching mechanism(doesn't matter what type as long as it's on/off, and not visible) into a cork like that?

I'd make a fake cork. I'd build a plastic housing for the electronics and switches, then wrap it in something firm but squishy (maybe even cork) textured and painted to look like cork. It's not going to be as good as a real cork for doing cork things, but it'll be much, much easier to work with.

Yeah, get a super cheap led with a button (like one of those cheapie light up st Patrick's things bars give out) and either hollow out a cork or wrap it in a sheet of cork.

I actually went through my optometrist. He was really cool about it, very helpful, and very interested in finding contacts that would be comfortable while meeting my vision and costume needs. I can't recommend it enough, especially since going "the official route" reduces the chance of you loving up your eyeballs! The lenses I purchased cost $90. If you don't need a prescription I imagine you could get something cheaper from a reliable source.

You should still go to an optometrist, because the curve of your iris is a metric that goes into designing and wearing contacts. If they're mis fit, you may end up blinking then out or having an uncomfortable experience. I've got all my custom lenses through optometrists, and even places like LensCrafters have been cool about it.

Per fda all contacts sold in the USA, regardless of if they are theatrical or not, should have to have a prescription for them. You should see an optometrist.

There were a few years there where optometrists couldn't get 0-strength lenses for samples - too many were getting stolen from what I've heard - but I think they're able to get them again. They use them to let patients try out colors without cracking open a box of more expensive prescription color lenses. I doubt you could just walk in and ask an optometrist you don't have an existing relationship with, but it doesn't hurt to get your eyes checked for abnormalities every few years anyway. Look, you've gotta get your iris curve measured to wear contacts comfortably for any period of time. Eye appointments are also a good health indicator, so just make an appointment. It won't cost much and you'll have a much much much better time wearing the contacts you order.

I'm looking to make Ral Zarek from Magic The Gathering, and I'm asking: Is a reliable way I can cut equal sized strips for leather straps for his backpack, and for the gold trim on his tabard? I don't trust myself to cut this by hand

For the gold trim, I would recommend bias tape. It comes in a variety of widths in packs of a few yards at a time. Fold it around the edge, sew it down and poof, perfect decorative edges. You can get it in both satin colors (for a more cartoony look) and metallics. You may be able to find it in fake leather as well but I've personally never used that type.

Most places that sell leather and leather tools will also sell pre-cut pieces to use as straps or belts, as a lot of people may need to replace this sort of thing and don't want to deal with slicing it themselves (or getting a hide to work from, either). There are probably better options but Tandy is one. Alternatively, you can also hit up a thrift store and see if you can bag some old belts. I don't know if that will work, it would depend on how much you need and how much they need to match - most cheap modern belts aren't going to be real leather, but if you are fine with synthetic then you might be able to grab some at a discount outlet or something.

You could buy a leather strap cutter... https://www.tandyleather.com/en/product/craftool-strap-cutter But tbh if I wasn't going to use it a lot $40 seems like a bit much. I'd just use a yard stick and a knife and do it by hand. (Using the edge of the ruler as the guide).

Anyone know any good way to emulsify the fluid inside a glowstick? I made those bottle i posted about and they're nice, but the fluid just sits in the bottom, and I'd like to distribute it a bit more evenly.

Propylene glycol is pretty cheap for a small amount and is basically just a clear gel. Should be pretty non-reactive too, for what its worth. Otherwise I'd say pectin or gelatin, but those may give off a slightly yellow or brownish color.

I've been commissioned to make a Wonder woman costume from the new movies. Her armor looks to be leather but my client would prefer it be something else. I am just trying to decide if foam or vinyl would be easier/look cooler. What do you guys think?
