oh if you liked abyss you'll adore berseria, it hits on some similar themes (though from a different perspective) and the lead guy on berseria even mentioned that he thought abyss was a highpoint for the series. it isn't really a retread or anything but you can feel some of the similarities.

That's depressing as gently caress. Krem was a cool side character who was trans and it was a part of their character. This is just pathetic and feels like a lazy way of patting themselves on the back for being progressive.

berseria has a pretty different tone/theme from other tales games, not in that it's Dark and Edgy but the characters are pretty flawed and hosed up and there's a lot of internal party conflict about what exactly is the right/wrong thing to do and the characters aren't really interested in being heroes or saving the world or anything they're mostly just trying to be slightly less hosed up than they are, which is neat. if you've strongly hated every tales game you've ever played iunno if it'll make you do a complete 180 tho, it'd depend on why you disliked them.

yggdra union is cool btw. play the psp version. and be sure to get the secret mission to get the tactician lady because she makes the midgame a lot easier (yggdra union has a hosed balance curve where the first half is pretty hard and the second half is on the easier side. this is intentional to get across its themes but means the early going can be kinda rough, especially since the mechanics are weird)

Previous Tales of games I've disliked due to character writing primarily. The characters are frequently little more than archetypes I've seen too many times before but with dumber outfits and hairstyles than last time I saw them. The interactions don't feel genuine or plausible as a result and then I don't give a poo poo what happens to anyone. Notable exception being Vesperia I guess? It had some moments where it shone.

I think it's kinda interesting that they did a roundtable thing last week and of all the people there, the guy who ended up doing this review is the only one who wasn't dunking on it, and he came across as rather apologetic as a whole.

Yeah I feel Berseria is really strong on the character writing front. There's a lot of actually pretty sincere feeling dialogue between characters and they all have different views on morality/their situation/etc, which makes them feel less like they're just archetypes pushed together into a party.

Nah, you don't need silly things like actual well written minority characters. Just give them a token representation. That will be enough to show how woke we are.

First, any conversation about the subject had to come up naturally in-game. A minor character like a shopkeeper would have no reason to explain that she is trans, so either the conversation would never come up or it would come up because her voice was clearly masculine, at which point it would look like a joke to most players, no matter how we tried to write it. Second, the character had to serve a purpose beyond “being there to be a genderqueer person.”

i mean the male party members are on the emotion side of things too, and there are female antagonists that obviously fall on the logical side. it's less about 'women have feelings!!!' and more about people who are stuck in their ways and holding themselves back being unable to grow or empathize with other people, which naturally is a good theme for the first game in the series with a female protagonist and a sort of 'reset' button after a game with a very mixed reception, so it kind of just wound up that way.

in a universe where you can have gay sex with a crag-faced alien dude and still command the entire galactic resistance, i'm not sure anyone actually gives a gently caress you used to be a dude. you don't have to leave the galaxy to change who you are.

just think of all the different checks in development that had to pass - writer, head writer, director, producers, qa, voice director, voice actor, animator... so many people saw that and thought "this. this is good"

The 2 male party members are the ones that are always overreacting and avoiding logic. Velvet is ironically the one that always falls back on logic, whether the outcome is good or bad. Its one of the best written JRPGs I have ever played.

Now that Im done it I look forward to playing as a space rear end in a top hat again. :toot:

To keep bringing up my superior Nippon game, Nier handles the gays very well.

Yoko Tano was quoted saying something along the lines of it shouldn't be what defines them, you shouldn't know it's there unless you really look because they are just people too.

Like half or more of Automata's cast is gay and only one character is overt about it.

So go buy Nier Automata on steam for the low price of $59.99, A Yoko Tano production, developed by Platinum Games and distributed by Square Enix.

Edit: Actually now that I think about it, pretty much everyone is gay, and it's a kinda big deal when you find out when one of them ISN'T. And it's a pretty big realization and made me feel really bad for the character.
