I didn't really feel anything (except love for the game) up until the second Emil boss fight. But then that wrecked me. And it confirmed exactly what I thought was the case with A2 too :(

I don't really like Ending E. It's not a happy ending. To be honest, ending C is probably Yoko Taro's happy ending. Although you can also claim that ending D is pretty happy as well.

For me: A2 is suicidal and bringing her back to life doesn't actually do anything to make her any more content, rather, the deactivation of the machine network actually removes a means of coping that she had, even if that means was pretty much not cool. Bringing her back to life is pretty cruel, as a whole.

All of the YoRHa androids are programmed with an innate need for humans, to the point where 9S considers destroying the moon server to make it stop. Knowing that humanity is dead, 9S will also have to share this with 2B as well. A2 already knows. The three protagonists are the only YoRHa directly stated to have been re-constructed but that doesn't mean that the Pods don't carry on to re-construct the other YoRHa units (who were largely passive, like the S type in the Forest or the ones in the Desert), but considering that the machine network returns and begins re-constructing units, it's not impossible that the 15th Machine War begins, but using the information gathered, the Machines would eventually create machines purposely made to be able to kill 2B, 9S and A2.

Basically, maybe nothing comes to pass and they all live happily, 2B certainly makes it at least 500 years past ending E, but even in a best case scenario, this is a hopeful good ending, rather than legitimately directly happy. It's probably the best you're getting from Yoko Taro, though.

Though I actually feel that the ending does actually allow for at least 2B to accomplish her personal goals, because that goal is to basically escape a cycle where she has to kill 9S over and over. 9S's happy end coming out of E is pretty up in the air. 2B is back, but that boy is damaged.

It doesn't really make me feel fulfilled either. All those side characters are still dead or suffering and I care about them way more than the main characters

I just marathoned through the latter half of B and all of route C today and I'm watching the credits roll now. It's rare that you get such an excellent blending of gameplay and storytelling. It really has been a treat so far. Playing this back to back with Breath of the Wild has been one of the best series of weeks in all my decades of gaming. Even my wife (an avowed scoffer-at-games) has gotten engaged in the story. Looking forward to wrapping up the rest of the endings.

I'm still right at the beginning of the game (I just finished the amusement park and discovered the goofy robot village), and I just got hit by a gigantic influx of sidequests. Will the main plot give me some kind of heads-up if I'm about to start a quest that will fail unfinished sidequests, or should I take a session and make a point of finishing all of 'em off before I move on with the story?

wrt endings chat, spoilers for everything

I'm pretty sure that between Adam's statement that the aliens were "plantlike and simple", Eve's giant Watcher tattoo, and the machines/infected units manifesting red eyes, Ending D is not a hopeful ending. The network is just another manifestation of The Flower or something like it and they are unwittingly wandering off to spread the Watcher's influence to another world. Ending E is the most hopeful as the machines have hosed off regardless and 2B, 9S, and A2 have opportunities to learn from their mistakes. The cycle of false progress is broken and the androids have a chance to build a reason to live that doesn't rely on external motivations.

I think opposite actually the way I see it the machines only manifest properties related to the Watchers because they assimilated data on humanity's downfall thanks to the Queen. They try to be like humans so in the process they also integrated vestiges of Watcher corruption. In the long run it might be dangerous but it's just another destructive thing they inherited from humans rather than something that inherently exists in their network.

There is a point in the story where all of those sidequests will fail, and it comes kinda out of nowhere. However, due to how the game is structured, you will have another chance to do (most) of those sidequests later on, and it should be pretty obvious when they fail for the second and last time. At the very end you get a chapter select so you can do anything you missed, however.

I'm just going to say it even though I reckon people will disagree. I don't think the main characters are very interesting. 9S is the only one who even gets a character arc and development. A lot of the side characters are fantastic and in the end I cared deeply for characters like Pascal and D&P but a lot of the time the main characters just felt like devices to keep the story going until 9S' character went somewhere and even then he was the only one.

I haven't finished route C yet, but I agree so far. Route A,B, and some C spoilers:

2B had few lines and most of them were her just being all "emotions aren't allowed :geno:" I didn't even care about 9S until route B. Though , I did start to like them both by the start of C. 2B dying did surprisingly upset me a bit though. Granted, I may change my opinion if the other routes change things.

I am curious though, what relationship is 2B and 9S supposed to have? I was getting a sibling-like vibe from them, but uh a line towards the end of route B made me think its a bit different.

I haven't been reading the thread, so sorry if this has been asked a million times already, but I'm curious about side quests and the new game + system.

I'm level 21, and some side quests seem clearly meant for much higher level characters (like The mad robot kungfu monk, who gets 10 levels more powerful each time you beat him) . Should I be aiming to clear all the side quests before ending the game, or are some of them meant to be done in NG+?

You can't miss any quests so you can come back when you want to do them in the grand scheme. You'll lose progress of some quests between play throughs, but not others.

Rather than worry too much about doing them all before story progresses, just move on with the story when you're ready to do so.

It will make a bonus boss show up if you go back down as 9S and open a chest he puts there after you speak to him after having stolen the mask, so you are safe to take it.

There's an elevator close to your end location that will send you back near the surface and another where you come out of that which you initially took when you started your trip to your end destination.
