facialimpediment posted:Right now, there's still a full-cloture requirement on Supreme Court nominees, so 60 votes are needed to break it (all Republicans +8 Democrats). Mitch McConnell (R-turtle) has basically suggested that he will kill that requirement if Democrats put up a roadblock and knock the cloture rule down to a majority-cloture requirement (just needs Republicans). It has already been done for Federal Judges, just not Supreme Court Justices. I don't know, it seems worthwhile to watch the current administration step on its own dick to death so that Dems don't have to deal with accusations of being obstructionist in 2/4 years. That matters too right?

So in the case that the Russia investigation does oust Trump, there's nothing to indicate at the moment that Pence would nominate someone different than Gorsuch. If Pence gets tossed out with Trump, we have President Ryan choosing Scalia's replacement.

The safest thing for the Dems to do regarding Gorsuch is delay until May. Between the budget, ACHCcaaaa or whatever the gently caress, and this the senate could be really busy for for the next few months.

Regarding Dems and the conundrum of Gorsuch not being a complete rubber stamp for the Trump administration, they should just let their coworkers across the aisle know that, independent of Gorsuch's qualifications, they're going to delay a vote on him for one year. The GOP has set the precedent, and, by their own actions, have shown that it is an acceptable tactic.

Turns out most people think the president is in charge of the economy and all laws, and everything for better or worse is the president's fault. The only people informed enough to recognize obstruction probably already have a political preference so they won't change their votes based on it. Well Obama was an Isis plant (or founded Isis, depending on semantics I guess). As right as you feel is as right as they feel. So any facts you may have 100% do not matter. Pretty sure Trump could bang his daughter in the White House front lawn and a good portion of his base would say they wish their daughters were that hot.

The damage he did to the image of politics in this country though, I'm partly convinced that's why we'll never the beancounters or intelligent seeming types back at the front of the Republican party. Bush 41 was the last I think. Bush 43 definitely changed his brand from when he was running for Texas compared to POTUS, a lot more Alfred E Newman in the latter. McGovern had to deal with the cognitive dissonance of being against a war his party started, it didn't go well for him. I mean gently caress, the funding cutoff he was threatening the military with probably fostered the "are troops" poo poo and gave ammo to the other side. Nixon and Bush Senior were the last non-big business Republicans. The EPA would have never flown under Reagan because it's bad for business' bottom lines. Trying to compare the parties of today to the parties of the LBJ/Nixon/Goldwater/McGovern era is like trying to compare Pink Floyd between the Syd Barrett/Roger Waters eras: They're entirely different animals with different focuses and lunatics in charge. Goldwater stirred up enough conservatism within the Republican party to make Nixon look liberal by comparison, and even Goldwater was appalled at how quickly the Republicans embraced the holy roller Jesus warriors and started waging culture wars. The failure of McGovern was the end of liberal politics in the Democratic party until the current era, because that was the catalyst that gave rise to the Democrats being Republican-lite.

It's also a pretty straightforward vote of confidence against the security systems in place at those airports.

They've done that before. I remember in 2012-ish, airports in the US had signs everywhere that any passengers from Venezuela (or some other South American country) had to be thoroughly rescreened in the US because they couldn't verify that people were being screened. This looks more like a routine "Welp, we can't verify their security systems" thing and I expect that any attempt to fight this in court will go nowhere.
