Some very interesting "lost" footage from D-Day here, with some computer magic added that makes it HD and 60FPS. :pcgaming:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LcggNe-SEXU

quote:

Four reels, discovered by researchers at the Eisenhower Library in 2014, were found to contain the first ever documentary of the D-Day landings. Intended as an initial report and produced in only days, the film was screened for military leadership and is mentioned in OSS reports as having been viewed by Winston Churchill, with copies 'flown to President Roosevelt and Mr. Stalin.'

Apparently forgotten in the climactic weeks and months that followed, the film was cataloged as separate, non-sequential reels rather than a single production. The film, lost and forgotten for decades, was digitized by the US National Archives and I have done my best to restore and enhance the footage.

More about the film and it's discovery can be read on the US National Archive's blog: https://unwritten-record.blogs.archives.gov/2014/09/09/the-first-d-day-documentary

At 23:38 or so, did one of those four guys get pulled under by the sinking tank? It cut away quickly and I could only really identify three swimmers in the water.

I think at the very end of that cut, you can make out the fourth guy swinging his arm right behind the guy on the left so I think he manage to get out. Unlike those two guys rushing up the beach in the scene right before that.

I'm pretty sure the Egyptian dude jumps out of the cab at the last second. Not sure if the cab could've survived that much weight but I'd sure as gently caress take my chances inside the reinforced roll cage than outside if a building is falling on me.

As far as the helicopter crash goes it looks like the helicopter is clear of the power lines? Looks like the tail rotor just up and fell off.

Those cabs aren't that reinforced unless you buy a wrecker one (I don't think that one was, they generally have larger arms and elbows to reach better spots and even then there isn't that much to reinforce. He's probably dead either way.

There is an amazing series of books called "D Day Through German Eyes" which go over about 20 individual German POWs that goes from about 24 hours before to up to when they get captured, with a separate story for each one.

If you haven't heard the story of the Widerstandsnest 62, and its infamous Butcher of Normandy, there's a German documentary about it, pretty sure it's either dubbed or has subtitles.

The documentary highlights how Severloh (probably) injured an American on the beach, and they became pen-pals after the war, and eventually met on the beaches below the Widerstandsnest and memorial obelisk during the big 60 year anniversary of the landing.

poo poo was pretty intense.

It's easy to see the rotor flying apart, but the line is completely invisible in the video. (And apparently was to the pilot too.)

Yeah you can see a line in the foreground and you can see the helicopter physically move a bit when it hits something but unless it's a trick of perspective and the line is so tight that it doesn't move I don't think it's hitting the visible line in the foreground.
