For the record, this isn't a "I HATE THE LEAFS BECAUSE THEY ARE TORONTO AND I HATE TORONTO", and - as noted the last time this came up - I don't read the Montreal Gazette and it's brethren, passing it over in favour of TSN, SN and the NHL website (the latter of which likes large market teams and superstars, fancy that).

Every sport has that team who eventually does well enough to the point where you're going to see a bandwagon the size of the moon ("They've been my second team this whole time, I swear" and reporters who usually seem pretty non-biased come out of the woodwork to fellate their team (and reporters who are biased to other teams will usually hop in on the love-in). And when it falls apart the media is going to hellfire and brimstone it down to try and reclaim their "unbiased values". Either way, this massive love-fest and bad poetry recital ends up generating a ridiculous and insulting amount of noise for the team that does it.

It's rarely the most successful teams because they tend to generate their own horrible, incestuous, shitfest of a media culture (see: Canadiens, Montreal; Yankees, New York; et al)

Hell, the Oilers are having a breakout year, but by comparison to all the "MATTHEWS FOR CALDER" and "LEAFS CAN MAKE THE PLAYOFFS IF..." talk, they're a loving submarine. Same for the storylines on the Flames and Islanders (who recovered from impressively bad starts), Wild and Blue Jackets (who seem to finally be overachieving/delivering on all that promise after years of underachievement and disappointment).

I don't have an opinion on Matthew Tkachuk. I just thought it was funny when, after scrapping with Alexander Wennberg earlier, he briefly considered getting physical at the end of the Jackets/Flames game in Calgary with slightly tougher potential opponents Scott Hartnell and Brandon Dubinsky.

Actually that was a kick rear end intense regular season game between two teams fighting for playoff positioning. They haven't had any regular season games like that since the "can the offence be better than Raycroft/Toskala is bad" era.

I honestly didn't think it was anything special. It was a bit chippier than usual and the goaltending was above average. It was a good game, but "best game of the year" is laughable.

The best game so far was Caps-Penguins that ended like 8-7 or something, in OT, with fuckin 9 goals in the second period. The second best is when the Caps took a big dump on Columbus' winning streak.

I get irritated when I see a team that is like 30-30-10 say they're a 500 team. No, you lost 40 times motha fucka. OT may be a gimmick but it's part of the game now. Deal with it.

I will never understand how people can look at old hockey, and how if the game ended tied, both teams got a point. And then look at new hockey, which works literally the exact same way except now there's a tiebreaker for an extra point. And based on that say the extra point goes to the team that loses the tiebreaker.

Oh wait yes I can, it's entirely fans of teams who have generally been good to great since it was introduced.

Edit: recognizing of course that my opinion is probably shaped for the same reason but in reverse.
