All the "moderate" Republicans have already jumped ship from the burning garbage fire. Nobody wants a Republican-lite party. The Democrats going further to the right in an idiotic quest for non-existent moderate Republicans is just going to lose 10x more people who actually want left leaning policies.

Bull. Where are they going to go? If the Democratic Party isn't left-enough for them, they're not going to vote Trump in 2020. At worst, they stay home (again, in the case of Berniebros). But the Democrats do not have a broad enough base. They have to expand, and the only people available are the moderate conservatives who think the GOP is off its rocker. They're out there...but Hillary pushed them away because she didn't think she needed them.

She was dead loving wrong. She absolutely needed them, and so does the Democratic Party. Pretending we're in Europe and that the Dems aren't really left is a bullshit non-argument. The center in THIS country is what matters, and feigning otherwise is a waste of time. It's a bad wall to keep bashing your head against.

Hillary's entire campaign strategy was about getting moderate republicans in the suburbs to cross over. That's why the convention was an America feel good exhibition with lots of military people and why Hillary went all in on Trump's personal odiousness rather than politics. It didn't work.

You already got the pivot to the center Democrat and you hated her.

Contrast her with Obama, who governed center but ran both times on leftist policy aims, and won handily.

Yep, still lots of time for those "no" votes to get turned into yes. I just don't see how.

Earmarks are gone, Donnie and Pence have already pitched the House GOP, Republican big-money groups are lobbying against the bill, House Republicans have no reputation of being good vote-counters, the CBO score is garbage, the bill actually does worse with insurance numbers than straight repeal, and literally nobody likes the bill.

Could be wrong though!

That's cool, so replace "left" with "center", and "center" with "the demographic formerly known as 'center'"?

No one is really pretending you're in Europe, it's just that YOUR political spectrum has been moving to the right almost in its entirety, with a few exceptions.

Not even trying to be cute here.

Also, what she absolutely needed was the people that voted in 2008 and 2012, but sat it out in 2016...I don't really think those people fall in some thus-far-unexplored demographic. The center is what she only would have needed to make up for the absence of those people.

There was a great article, by the way, that Foreign Policy literally just published about Trump supporting women.

a pretty common refrain is "oversensitive", "politically correct," et cetera.

Honestly I say run on a leftist economic message, ditch some of the more annoying social justice-y types, ditch gun control and boom you have a recipe for Democratic electoral success.

Hillary had a great economic platform that was way more comprehensive than anyone else's, in either primary and obviously in the general.

But she sure as hell didn't run on it.

That still leaves us holding the bag of thoughts and prayers every time there's a mass shooting. Besides which perception is a lot more important than facts in todays world. So many people crying about Obama taking their guns away despite not being able to point to anything concrete. People got it into their heads that Hilldawg was a gun grabber and that was all that mattered despite any published policy position.

I get all the legalistic arguments for it but people were loving pissed for good reason and the view from below was nothing but assholes opening wide to rain down even more poo poo and it wasn't the first time.

Dems as a whole, for decades, have been either silent or complicit in organized labor getting thoroughly and completely rear end hosed in this country and they've been abandoned in droves for it and all the other outcomes of that kind of policy. Union membership used ti be basically guaranteed votes, now unions are a god drat joke and have been practically outlawed if they do anything that hurts the money. They coasted for years on the civil rights victories and forgot about pretty much anything else. Whether through incompetence or malice benefiting their donors is a matter of opinion.

WaPo on the Laptop ban, bold my own

quote:

They note that the United States has not been forthcoming about whether the ban is based on recent intelligence or long-standing concerns. There is also no explanation for why electronic devices in the cabin are a concern, and electronic devices in the baggage hold are not.

There is an alternative explanation

It may not be about security. Three of the airlines that have been targeted for these measures — Emirates, Etihad Airways and Qatar Airways — have long been accused by their U.S. competitors of receiving massive effective subsidies from their governments. These airlines have been quietly worried for months that President Trump was going to retaliate. This may be the retaliation.

These three airlines, as well as the other airlines targeted in the order, are likely to lose a major amount of business from their most lucrative customers — people who travel in business class and first class. Business travelers are disproportionately likely to want to work on the plane — the reason they are prepared to pay business-class or first-class fares is because it allows them to work in comfort. These travelers are unlikely to appreciate having to do all their work on smartphones, or not being able to work at all. The likely result is that many of them will stop flying on Gulf airlines, and start traveling on U.S. airlines instead.

As the Financial Times notes, the order doesn’t affect only the airlines’ direct flights to and from the United States — it attacks the “hub” airports that are at the core of their business models. These airlines not only fly passengers directly from the Gulf region to the United States — they also fly passengers from many other destinations, transferring them from one plane to another in the hubs. This “hub and spoke” approach is a standard economic model for long-haul airlines, offering them large savings. However, it also creates big vulnerabilities. If competitors or unfriendly states can undermine or degrade the hub, they can inflict heavy economic damage.
