Competition Bureau on Bell buying MTS: "This would be terrible for consumers. Approved!" http://www.competitionbureau.gc.ca/eic/site/cb-bc.nsf/eng/04200.html quote:OTTAWA, February 15, 2017 After a nine‑month investigation of BCE Inc.s (Bell) acquisition of Manitoba Telecom Services (MTS), the Commissioner of Competition, Bell and Xplornet Communications Inc., (Xplornet) reached a Consent Agreement that addresses the Commissioners concerns regarding the mergers effect on mobile wireless services in Manitoba.

less than three posted:Competition Bureau on Bell buying MTS: "This would be terrible for consumers. Approved!" I mean, to be fair, the point was more "this would be terrible for consumers for these reasons, but we'll let you do it if you address these reasons by enabling someone else to replace the competitive carrier you are buying out." The ACTUAL problem is that Xplornet will do a terrible job of this, as anyone familiar with their Internet service would tell you. Were Shaw not interested in expanding Wind/Freedom to MB?

What the gently caress - give some of your stuff to Telus (a big three) and Xplornet (a non-player) and we'll approve this industry consolidation that we just mentioned will be terrible for consumers

I am looking for the best way to have a cell phone number that forwards to my work cell phone. I have been paying $20 a month (used to be 11) to rogers to have a 0 minute 0 text plan with call forwarding. My flip phone from 2004 died, so now I need both a phone (it was the only spare phone in the house) and something for it to connect to. It would be nice if I could get text messages too. There is probably a voip thing that does this now? We don't have the best internet at home, but its probably fine to just use that if need be.

Shaw has no incentive to cater to rural Manitoba because they can't bundle cable with cell phone out there. They could however bundle cell phone/wireless internet/satellite TV together so who the gently caress knows.

I have my Canadian cell number going to voip, which connects to my smartphone in the US. It does texts too, but that's $3/mo I think. Seems to work well enough?

I set up an account with Voip.ms, they had a local cell-looking number, it was literally a couple bucks setup fee. 80c/mo per number, 1c/minute I think. Voicemail to email, SMS support, more bells than I thought. Apparently most Android dialers have a built-in SIP client, I have a Samsung where they crippled the feature so I use CSipSimple. Fine integration with the phone, a little hassle to set up properly but it's cheap as gently caress, and great to slap on craigslist ads or slip sketchy tinder dates.

Seems like either will work. Ill have to get a some sort of soft phone or something for the house, but i think that will be fine. More junk to buy on amazon/ebay I guess. e: Read about voip.ms and it does everything I need, .85 a month per phone number and free sms. Can transfer phone number from my cellphone. Sounds great, and will one day set up some voip phones at the house. blindjoe fucked around with this message at 22:24 on Mar 15, 2017 |

For any Quebekistanians out there, if you're lacking mobile data and want a decent deal, looks like the Biggie Smalls has unlimited canada-wide calls and 6gb data for $50. Not bad. Better than going with the main carriers.
