Storing poo poo remotely is always going to bring about some risk, and nobody recently has been saying poo poo about cloud storage aside from "yeah maybe someone will get into Dropbox but it'll take 100 years to crack your password vault."

xzzy posted:

I'm not saying to not use Dropbox syncing, I sure as heck do because I don't want to carry a usb drive with me everywhere. Just be aware that there are risks (there are always risks).

But yes, the "safest" option is to only store the vault on hardware you control 100%.

If this is what a privacy subreddit looks like, they're both correct and reasonable.

So is there a functionally equivalent to LastPass replacement (including cloud syncing) that doesn't require local installation privileges on Windows (Chrome extension from the Chrome web store only)?

Dashlane, True Key, RoboForm, and 1password do require local installs. The only one I'm seeing on the web store that I've even heard of is bitwarden. Is that any good? It's open source, but seems to not have that many users, so I'm a little gunshy on it. There's also keeper which I've never heard anyone ever mention.

KeepASS has a "portable" zip file download. You put it on a USB key and no install required. Of course this assumes you're allowed to use the usb ports. Browser integration is a tire fire too, odds are you're gonna be c&p-ing passwords from the keepass app to log in to anything.

So it's not great software.. but it does technically do the thing you're asking for.

Keepass is 100% out, I'm not at all willing to put up with the level of hassle it requires.

The Chrome extension I use works about as well as LastPass other than not automatically detecting password fields.

iOS Safari is not nearly as good, though.

But yeah, if you're not willing to deal with like 20% more hassle, you're not gonna have a good time.

If you're talking about ChromeIPass, it relies on KeePassHTTP which has some weaknesses: https://github.com/pfn/keepasshttp/issues/258

Even worse the author is saying they don't want to maintain keepasshttp anymore which is never good for security related software.

Nah, I'm using CKP. I think I tried ChromeIPass and didn't like it for some reason I don't recall.

At least we now live in a world where we can argue about which password manager is not the worst.

The argument before this argument was whether to use a password manager to have unique, strong passwords versus reusing the same 1-3 password over and over again for everything.

I'm sorry for making GBS threads up the thread with more 1password talk but I'd appreciate your help.

I'm on the 30-day trial period to see if I can speed my workflow up. So far everything's fine with my computers at home, but what's the best way of having my passwords avaiable on my work computer? I'm not able to install the 1password program there, but browser extensions are no problem. Apparently 1passwordanywhere is done for (?) and there doesn't seem to be a proper solution afaik. Which is bad news, because I don't want to have to use my phone and manually enter every login whenever I'm at work. LastPass doesn't have this problem (which could potentially be a security problem for all I know...) since the browser extensions have your logins.

Great if Apple lets Workflow access deeper integration features with iOS, so let's all keep our fingers crossed!

I tried MiniKeePass for awhile until it decided it didn't want to be able to access my Dropbox share anymore. I then switched to KyPass, which works fine. The former is free, so try it out. You have to manually resync it in Dropbox (if you're using that to store your vault), but it's just a couple taps. KyPass does it automatically.

The only way they were ever bros was Google mapping data in (Apple) Maps, and support for Push in Gmail.

On the former, Gmail, Inbox, and Google Maps work just fine as standalone Apps, especially now that one could delete Mail.app and Maps.app if they wanted. Also, blame Apple directly for not supporting IMAP-IDLE for Gmail push support.

IMAP Idle requires a constant connection to the server, which isn't really ideal on a mobile device.

The idle process can run on a server which isn't mobile, though, and just use APNS to trigger the notification push.

I don't understand why I can't harass people online. Seriously, somebody please explain why I shouldn't be allowed to stalk others on social media!
Fastmail supports true push in mail.app so if they can do it I have to think that google just doesn't want to bother. They'd rather you use their gmail app anyway so they can literally track every single finger tap location and how many ms you waste looking at emails so they can make money off of you.

e: Dropbox: unless something is changed the major privacy issue is that while Dropbox data is encrypted, everybody has the same key, and employees can, and occasionally have, access any users data and see/read/copy it. For 1Password this doesn't matter because 1Password is smart and encrypts the files before sending it off to Dropbox, but this does mean that a random dropbox tech can see all your tiny dick pics.

Any recommendations?
