Almost everything on the Mini has been replaced except the trunk and hood, usually with something custom fabricated except for the body panels. The whole point of it seems to be just showing off their fabrication skills, which are pretty impressive.

If it handles direct combustion pressure like that I wonder if it is any good at being a cylinder liner. JB Weld is toolable, right? Making-of video for the plastic piston: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mKNn59qL43I

A couple of interesting alternate engine technologies that are actually functional and may see the light of day someday: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c19kn3drdFU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v5fxoEisKxo The Liquid Piston design seems to be a geometric inverse of the Wankel rotary, while I like the Duke because it's very similar to an engine design I came up with as a teenager - so it's nice to see that it actually works.

Does it actually work though?

The duke design needs two rotating surfaces to seal against each other - the head with the ports and spark plugs against the rotating cylinder block (barely visible in the video at all). This is one of the major problems that killed off sleeve valves and rotary valves for anything but very niche applications. And the liquid piston design looks like it would have all the problems a rotary would have, plus the intake is through the crank which has to be hollow and thus much weaker.

The duke engine has been around for 20+ years and has no applications I am aware of.

CarForumPoster posted:Yep. The duke engine has been around for 20+ years and has no applications I am aware of. Actually, they're still in the prototyping stage. They apparently ran out of funding a couple years ago so its development has slowed way down. The NZ government may be throwing them some money soon. You may be thinking of the Dyna-Cam engine (another axial design), which has roots going back to the 1920s and was certified by the FAA in the 1980s. They've had a big legal fight which included being taken over by Axial Vector Engine Corp. back in 2006. They may have some actual commercial business starting for their diesel version. Ed: Nope, Axial Vector Engines changed its name to Axial Vector Energy in 2008, then went out of business in 2014. So they're dead. All these things make good compressors, but poor internal combustion motors. You see all sorts of poo poo like this in refrigeration so they go somewhere. But no one has advanced over the regular piston engine in $ for performance since the rotary and orbital, which have been evolutionary dead ends e: and money pits. There's nowhere to go for them now since electric is the way to go. Fo3 fucked around with this message at 11:14 on Mar 29, 2017 |
