~My girlfriend~ and I decided we would beat Wonder Boy 3 on real hardware, since it was a childhood favorite of hers. After doing so, I can say that it is a very good game that holds up very well, even after all these years. This remake has a mode to switch between new and retro graphics/music because, if I understand correctly, the game's unchanged for the most part. If you're a fan of the genre, it's worth checking out for sure.

That cool and looking forward to that coming out next month. Never played WB3, but don't you spend most of the game as a monster so you rarely get to see Wonder Boy and Wonder Girl proper?

Here's some video/sound tests of GBA and gameboy games emulated on Wii to my Sony PVM with component cables if anyone is interested in seeing what the Wii is capable of as an emulation machine. Sorry for the low recording volume and abrupt ending but I thought some of you guys might like this. Considering how cheap the Wii is, it's great for this purpose. Especially if you already own one and some classic cons.

So, it looks like for space reasons I'm going to have to lose my retro gaming CRT sadly. What's the most economical way to not hate life when I'm playing my retro consoles on a modern LCD/LED? The thing that I usually find most problematic is the increased delay. Image quality is somewhat important but I'm willing to sacrifice a little in that regard.

I actually think that simply linedoubling a 240p signal to 480p is like, 90% of the Framemeister experience, as most modern TVs actually handle 480p scaling very nicely. I just don't know that anyone has marketed a very simple linedoubler yet. There are lots of old Extron units that you could probably do some custom cabling for that would do the trick, I wish someone would write a guide to cheap linedoubling.

The go-to PC indie shmups seem to be Tohou, Cho Ren Sha 68k, and Crimzon Clover. The latter was so good that it was powered-up into a full-fledged arcade game, which is what you get when you buy the Steam version. There are like, 20 Tohou games, and the series has a lot of fans, but I'm not one of them. CRS68k is a freeware windows 95 port of the Sharp X68k original, and may have compatibility issues with your current OS.

1. How big is your current CRT, and is it just a regular TV?
2. How many systems, games, accessories, and the like do you have and keep hooked up? A lot, a few? Permanently hooked up or as-needed?
3. What size of LCD/LED screen would you be looking at using?

If you're looking at a small LCD anyway, maybe the solution is to drop down to a smaller CRT (like a 14" PVM) , especially if you're looking at needing to buy some kind of scaler device anyway with its own space and power socket demands. It would be an option worth exploring for your situation, at least, and would mitigate the lag concerns while offering an option for better image quality over RGB to boot (so long as you get a model with it and some cables).

Food for thought, at least.

I went on a small road trip today and stopped at some retro stores. Finally found a copy of Shadow of Rome for a decent price and picked up Shadowgate on the cheap. Even my secret sources are now completely picked over, though. Sports games piled high and deep.

However, I wanted to mention some amusing pricing I saw because I know how much the thread loves that. Atari 5200 with four games: $200. No, it did not have the box or anything like that and the four games were some of the most common junk you'd expect. Also, a store had Japanese copies of the Persona 2 games: $120 each. Yes, you can import them for less than $10 and if you're in Japan you can buy them starting at 1 yen each.

The CRT is a 27" Trinitron. The LCD is an older one I've had that's 46". It used to be my primary entertainment center one till I got a new one and moved it to the retro game room. I've got 6 or 7 consoles hooked up at any given time that run the spectrum of old and new. For the less used ones they have spots on the shelves but no cables run unless I get the desire to play them.

I'd honestly be happiest being completely out of the business of keeping a CRT of any kind just for the sake of simplifying my setup. Potentially I'll have to look into something expensive eventually but I figured someone here might have been in a similar situation and found something in between the high and low end in terms of cost/effectiveness. I'm for sure not a total purist. I want the actual consoles and games but I'm not totally hell bent on maintaining the same A/V experience.

Then again I have a birthday in 3 months and a Framemeister via b-day money doesn't sound too bad :D

Edit: I was also keeping the CRT for lightgun games but the reality is that I never really play them except for a short while after I got the TV.

That is correct. In the old one, you pretty much play through the first 10 minutes in human form and that's about it. You can also cheat and become human again, if you want. I wonder if there will be any additional modes that would make this worthwhile in the remake.

EDIT: They also stated that they would NOT be changing the animal forms to reflect gender (for example, lion vs. lioness).

I have this sneaking suspicion that you're being sarcastic.

I got kind of curious about what in the first year of the PS2's lifespan was worth playing. 2000 is pretty much all terrible; when the only thing on the list where I go, "Oh yeah, I'd play that" is Super Bust-a-Move then it's a real load of stinkers. I'll concede Fantavision is distinctive, though.

I've got a Game Boy game based on the same show that the game in the lower left is. It is not good.

Is that the Master System Mark-III version of Ghouls 'n Ghosts?
