Totally unrelated, What's the deal with 'Fast Startup"? Is it causing problems with anyone else's Windows 10 install? Perhaps I should clarify, its not the actual fast startup that's the problem (I like that), its shutting down that's the problem. 7 out of 10 shutdowns, my PC doesn't shut down, at least not right away. Windows says its shutting down, my monitor goes dark, but my PC stays on, sometimes for up to 15 minutes. 1 in 10 times, it doesn't actually even shut down, it turns back on again. I get what Windows is doing, its building some cache file for fast boot and not actually shutting down when "fast startup" is enabled, but I checked the event logs from when this last happened and they show my PC going to sleep before shutting down. What. For now, I've turned off fast startup, and that seems to have fixed my problem but I'd like to use the feature because I like the faster boot times. Other than fast startup, my PC is running fine with no oddness. I'll also mention I checked power settings and they're all set to balanced and the PC is not set to power back on after power failure. I'm running off a platter drive (Hurr....Found the problem!  ) and I do plan to upgrade to SSD but a cursory glance on Google says this can and does happen with SSDs (I do plan on getting an SSD in the very near future). Is "Fast Startup" just bugged? Is it any better in the dev-builds leading up to the "Creators Update"? I probably should just run chkdsk and sfc /scannow to see if anything's gibbled with my install.

In my experience fast startup is garbage and not worth messing with. Basically what it does is that it turns shutdown into a deep sleep option and that's how that next startup is faster. This can lead to a lot of weird issues since a lot of things don't work well with sleep anyways so I always have it turned off. If you want faster startup times invest in an SSD like you mentioned.

I hate fast startup. No matter what the benefits of fast startup are, I'd like it to die. It messes up my Bluetooth devices, and I don't see much, if any, startup benefits. Also, this is a fun thing I felt I'd point out to everyone here since adblock chat is going on: Adguard is the poo poo on Windows and you can buy a lifetime license for like $8 by buying it with foreign currency (I just did it with my paypal account). It'd even started loving up following graphic driver updates in that the first time I book after the upgrade I just get a corrupted pixel garbage screen until I fully power cycle.

Either way, it's not a real feature, it just makes it look like the machine booted fast so OEMs could keep slapping slow-rear end HDDs in their lovely laptops.

I'm still using windows 7, but am expecting to have to get windows 10 home for my new system since I want to get a skylake processor (I know you can still get windows 7 installed awkwardly with one, but I'm not familiar what other issues could come up down the line and I don't really want to deal with the uncertainty). The forced auto updates really bother me. I've read about methods to keep them from happening, but they were reported over a year ago and I don't know if system updates have since made them obsolete. What I want to do is get all the current updates and then decide what future updates to install going forward (and when), same as I can with windows 7 right now. Is there a simple way to do this?

Purchase Windows 10 Professional. Now you have total control over updates. You can put them off forever if that is your thing. Is there an easy way to remap a single key on my keyboard? The $ sign is ctrl+alt+4 in the keyboard language I otherwise prefer to have but I'd like to switch it to shift+4.

Just had to do a clean format and reinstalled Windows 10. I used powershell to rip out all of the retarded default apps including the store, renamed the Cortana folder to get rid of that crap, but still this piece of poo poo called "paradise beach" keeps reinstalling itself. I hate this. The app itself doesn't bother me, whatever it is, but I just don't want it to decide things by itself like that. What program or part of windows is it that can just install poo poo like that? And is there a way to get rid of the "try microsoft edge" nag messages on the startup screen? I didn't have those before my format but somehow they're there now.

No extra software needs to run as you use the new locale.

It gets better - manufacturers can even embed programs in the firmware that run at boot time (though that's not what's happening to you). You may have heard that Lenovo did it with their super-vulnerable crapware a couple years back.

It's really cool that Microsoft decided to discontinue Windows Movie Maker with no replacement and pulled all the download links from their site. (and it's really really cool how a .dll randomly disappeared from my installation and the only way to fix it is to reinstall the program) Is there somewhere I can safely download it from?

Windows Media Creation Tool failed with the same error on both my windows 10 PC trying to create a bootable USB AND on my windows 7 pro PC I'm trying to upgrade... It's been awhile since I've installed Windows 10, am I missing something obvious? Edit : is there a better way to install Windows 10 now? I haven't tried since upgrades were free...

Doesn't the tool also let you choose to download the ISO? I just used the tool myself a few days ago, and I seem to recall it asked if I wanted the tool to create the bootable USB stick, or just download an ISO. And if that is really the case, if it successfully lets you download an ISO, then you can pretty much narrow down the problem to the USB stick. EDIT: What brand/model is the USB stick? If your machine does UEFI boot, you can download the ISO and just extract all the files to the root of a USB. You may need to make sure it's FAT formatted, but otherwise nothing special required to make it UEFI bootable. That's a way around if the MCE fails/refuses to make a bootable USB stick.

It didn't let me download the ISO on either machine, which is the weirdest part. I wasn't using a USB stick at all on the windows 7 machine at all  . It actually gave me the same error message on both machines, regardless of whether I chose the "upgrade this machine" option or "create media to update a different machine" I'll have to check when I get home re: error code, I believe the USB is a SanDisk Cruzer.

I could use bits and pieces from other existing scripts (like reclaimWindows10, etc.) but for some other items, I'd have to research commands. Does anyone know if there's a command-line method for disabling Fast Startup? Looking at "powercfg", I don't see an option in there to disable it.

Just a rant but for the third time in recent memory Microsoft pushed a problematic update that hosed my little Plex server. I don't know how they've changed QA on this stuff but its getting really annoying. This time it was a double whammy with a network card driver and an MPEG2 library change. So between Plex and Windows itself it was just boot loops and hard locks, took a few hours to fix. I gently caress around with FreeBSD for work so I just wanted something where I could turn my brain off at home but no such luck apparently.

Windows doesn't update those that I have ever noticed. Sounds like your hardware hosed up.

Once I was rid of that I was able to apply the new update but it wasn't a fun time.
