Are Noodlers ink a legitimate concern for someone not using a pen daily? Will I have any issues (besides Baystate Blue which I understand dyes pens alot)? Also favorite brands of ink? I've got 2 iroshizuki (winter grey and blue green) and a diamine oxblood. Should I jump to Noodlers? J Herbin? Also jeezus this thread makes me want to buy things.

I've not had any issues, right now I have Noodler's Ottoman Rose and Bad Black Moccasin in pens that I let dry up on the regular because I keep too many inked and haven't had any trouble cleaning them out. I'm just using them in metros though, you might not want to risk it in more expensive pens. I haven't picked out any favorite ink brands, mostly I just chose inks based on color and am like a magpie just going after whatever new shiny thing catches my attention.

Lowness 72 posted:Are Noodlers ink a legitimate concern for someone not using a pen daily? Will I have any issues (besides Baystate Blue which I understand dyes pens alot)? Noodler's is fine for modern pens, biggest issue is cleaning a pen you let dry up because it's very dye dense. Flushing takes forever as the ink residue just keeps dissolving. That's not an issue exclusive to Noodler's, it shares that with other heavily pigmented inks like Private Reserve. My favorite brand is J. Herbin and I feel like they have a nice range of shades in most colors. Diamine and de Atramentis are nice too.

This is 100% spot on for noodler's, although unless the pen's pretty much empty, it's gonna take forever to actually dry up. See, all that nib creep is a reminder that there's still ink in the pen! Also +1 for Herbin. Not only is it lovely, it's pretty universally well-behaved, even on terrible paper. The only downside is that pretty much none of their line is even the slightest bit water-resistant, so be careful where you set down your coffee cup or whatever.

Lowness 72 posted:Are Noodlers ink a legitimate concern for someone not using a pen daily? Will I have any issues (besides Baystate Blue which I understand dyes pens alot)? Noodler's Blue-Black is what I use in my work pen, a Lamy Al-Star. It started up just fine after not using it for 2 weeks. (NB: I dilute my Blue-Black to 50%, but you should still be OK.) I find how well the pen cap seals to be the largest factor in whether I can leave a pen alone for while without use. Iroshizuku, Diamine, Noodler's, J. Herbin... can't go wrong with any of those. Don't buy the Noodler's Baystate series unless you have a pen to sacrifice to it. I have the most Noodler's ink, followed by Diamine. My favorite ink to use is Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo -- it's so well behaved! My favorite ink color is definitely Noodler's Blue-Black diluted to 50%. I love all of my inks for different reasons, and will gladly list them all to nobody's benefit. (Diamine Sapphire changes color as it dries! J. Herbin Poussiere de Lune reminds me of my grandmother! Pelikan 4001 Violet looks like Spring! etc...) I like to get ink sample packages from places like Goulet or Anderson Pens for a bit of variety. I'll then use whatever color strikes me. Everything Burrito posted:sometimes when I let a pen with a Noodler ink in it dry up I just fill it with clean water and keep on trucking I've done this. I think Nathan even said you can do this somewhere; that they're all easily reconstituted (if you can remember what the original volume should be). I guess if I wanted to put fountain pen ink in my bug-out bag, I'd dehydrate some Noodler's. I will say that La Reine Mauve is terrible to clean out of anything if you let it dry up completely. effika fucked around with this message at 04:18 on Mar 25, 2017 |

When you have the paranoia of a prepper but the motivation of a suburban teenager, you half-rear end it and decide you need to carry a tackle box full of poo poo to get groceries. Practically everyone who grows up in a hurricane-exposed coastal state or one that experiences natural disasters on a human-perceived frequency learns a few basic things: 1 - find a properly organized shelter and go directly there if possible 2 - shelter in place, fill the tub and any other clean containers with fresh water, and plan out your food with consumption of perishables first 3 - find the nearest properly organized shelter and go there as soon as it's safe These are going to be better "carry" than a whole suitcase full of lovely kukris and shoehorns.

EDC and minimalist communities have a lot of overlap I think because if you're trying to maximize your EDC you need to also have rad gadgets that take up a tiny amount of space. For example I know of a way to carry your keys using a small item that doubles as a pocketknife and also as a ballpoint pen. It even uses Cross refills for the pen.

If you pack some anti-coagulant in your bug out bag, you can make your FP ink from blood, which should be really handy in the apocalypse. I just realized my Asa Maya hasn't shipped yet. It was supposed to be done by the 18th

Did Massdrop used to be way better? These days a lot of the "deals" don't seem like very good deals at all. There are a few diamonds in the rough (thinking hard about that Diamine pack), but a lot of times it's just "Buy X for the same price as Amazon, only you have to jump through some extra hoops and then wait a month to get your poo poo."

Trustworthy posted:Did Massdrop used to be way better? These days a lot of the "deals" don't seem like very good deals at all. Yeah, I recall getting a little tritium bar keychain so I don't have to turn on the lights in the foyer to grab them when I'm actually early for work once in a great while. It was cheaper than Amazon but the month long wait really was a turn-off. For most of the stuff they have it's really not enough of a discount to merit the wait unless it's unavailable anywhere else.

It's a fountain pen! It's a switchblade! It's a steampunk bottle opener! It's a Van Gogh-inspired LED flashlight! It's a Theon Greyjoy penis finial! I think it's just a matter of differing tastes. There's amazingly little crossover between FP and EDC even though they have similar sorts of philosophies. Fountain pen users on the whole tend to be more about the details of the individual instrument (compare the endless discussions about nib quality, nib swapping, screw tops vs. snap caps, and soforth) and the modularity of the pen itself vs. the EDC focus on the modularity of the entire kit and superfluous functionality. To summarize: fountain pens are "one pen can't do everything; I don't really need it to, but I would like it to, so that's why I own 12" while EDC is "my kit can do everything, even if I never use half of its functions." You don't have to go out of your way to find reasons to use a pen, but you do have to be in a specific sort of situation to use your tactical window-breaker pen. Fountain pens aren't water resistant or as reliable as one of those write-in-the-rain pens, so in the mind of an EDC survivalist sort, they're too much of a liability, or something. I kind of wish someone would make an EDC thread, just because I kind of love it and kind of find it ridiculous, which is how I feel about fountain pens. The Reddit is pretty great just because it's half stuff that might be legitimately useful and half, well, pistols. Heath fucked around with this message at 21:52 on Mar 25, 2017 |

I mean, the real problem is that once you stab something with a fountain pen, it isn't gonna work right. That kinda puts a damper on things, y'know? Like a bent penknife blade is an annoyance, but it more or less still works (until it snaps). I mean, there's also probably a useful difference between "i load my jorts with 25 knives and 7 flashlights powerful enough to blind a man from 1km" and "I put some useful tools in my car" kinda edc types anyway. But y'know, there's only so many times you can see someone jam some matches and birch into an altoids tin before it goes from "oh, neat" to "that's nice." I assume that's why they all seem nuts and have like 25 window-smashing hammer/campstove combination monstrosities.

There's absolutely a personality type that's associated with any given kit. One of the beautiful things about that subreddit is that everyone lists their occupation, age and sex. Aside from being overwhelmingly males in their 20s, you start to put together profiles of people. The people most likely to carry guns are (in reverse order) 3) military, 2) IT specialists and 1) retail managers. Seems to work the other way around with knives. And people carrying weaponry of some sort far, far outpace the occasional student (who are also disturbingly frequently armed) or graphic designer who posts their laptop and a pair of expensive headphones and a Moleskine with some Prismacolors. Sometimes you'll find a tech geek who carries around an entire library of books every day. One of my favorite threads on this very dead gay forum was an EDC about a decade ago where goons were apparently utterly baffled that a man would carry a bag around on a daily basis, and the several page derail that happened because someone posted their dugout and people flipped poo poo that someone would carry weed around on them. Back to fountain pens: I got a bottle of KWZ Honey last night and I'm absolutely in love with it. It's probably the prettiest gold ink I've used, and it's like a mix between Apache Sunset and J. Herbin Lie de Thé. I don't know how I will feel about the smell of it after a while, but it's subtle without being too perfumey and seems to last a while.

I received a Lamy dialogue broad nib at a steal ,for around $18. I put it in my Lamy ABC and it's a dream. It writes fantasticly. It creates a very distinctive profile and glides across the paper very well .Its a nice everyday nib if you are ok with a slightly larger script. The contact point is quite large so it lays down a lot of ink. I can chew through a cartridge in a week. I sent out another batch of goon orders today. I hope you guys enjoy your new diaries! We've retired some patterns and added some others (the new wool with the rainbow weft is a particularly crazy fabric). I also received very rare clearance to use a photo of our artisans at work, so I've updated the craftsmanship section to include more details about how we make our books and the disability organisation we work with. You can read about it at http://musu.bi Final pricing on the diaries is now more or less set. I'm glad to say we've been able to pin the default price down very close to our presale price, at around 67 USD instead of 62. The seasonal fabrics and exotics will cost a little more.
