That... sure was an ending.

gonna write some thoughts down.

Ultimately I think the game tries to do too much. It's a game about mental illness, the death of rust belt america, a coming of age story, and a story of cosmic horror. It tries to wear too many hats and it really shows it in the last act. It's really the Cosmic Horror part that really comes in the weakest. It is sprung up super randomly in the end, there are no real clues outside of Maes dreams that this stuff even remotely exists.

It causes a lot of things to blend together. Like I was convinced that everything was a delusion brought on my mental Mae's mental breakdown...

...and I think it would have been better that way? The death cult, the complete lack of any clues within the town, no one seemingly horrified by the cosmic horror they were witnessing, it all seemed very odd and stilted.I think that if there was more of a decent into madness and bizarro town poo poo that the reveal would have been better earned. I'll have to read the thread for all the spoiler discussion that has happened so far.

I agree completely, the last act really put me off the game, not in the "the ending retroactively ruined it!" sense, just in the "was that really necessary? I'm thinking no" sense.

The last act is great but you got to keep in mind what is said before it about gods and constellations and metaphors and capitalist bullshit and remember, always remember, that the thing pulling everyone apart in the end isnt a bunch of old dudes making poo poo worse for the worse off while pretending they are making it better, it goes way beyond that and it doesnt care, there IS something real but we make it into stuff it isnt anywhere but our heads

I get that, but I think they could have set up the cosmic insignificance theme a little earlier in the story, perhaps in Mae's dream sequences. The conversation with the elder bird god-thing was cool, but for the rest of them I just felt like I was hitting switches on a platformer. Those bits kind of took me out of the story.

Picked up this game on a lark, since people were comparing it to Oxenfree & Undertale. I wasn't expecting much since it seemed like it was a game about cartoon animal teens with problems.

I ended up loving it though, probably my favorite game of 2017 so far, even having finished Automata. It sort of reminded me of (thematic spoilers) Deadly Premonition, but without the lovely parts.

On a replay, I enjoyed how much foreshadowing and layered metaphor is happening during the "boring" first half of the game.

Also the soundtrack is dope. Bully-level good. Pierogies in the Dark is loving great and you basically never hear the second half of that one if you just play the game normally.

It just came to mind that I have no clue why I thought to do that.

Q: On a scale of 1-10, how big of a deal are spoilers for this game?

1 being "The princess is in another castle in Super Mario Bros" and 10 being "I will not discuss Nier with you until you get at least to Ending B"

Errant Signal just posted a video on this game, and I want to watch it, but it's tagged for spoilers and I haven't played yet

I would say 'big enough deal that I'd play the game before watching the video'.

Like... 6? They won't ruin the game for you, but some spoilers provide context for the rest of the game that makes replays interesting.

It takes maybe 7-8 hours to complete so you should just probably power through the entire thing so that you can enjoy the story without prejudice.

I'm not really that far into the game, I think, but so far the only part I really don't care for is the lantern dream "puzzles". I don't know if they get more meaningful later on but so far it just seems like pointless busy work keeping me from the story.

There's a later dream sequence that contextualizes them a little better but yeah, they were definitely the weakest part of the game for me.

FreeKillB
May 13, 2009
Weird thing about the dream sequences is that on my second playthrough they just flew by. I think they work better when you're playing the game in short to moderate bursts, but if you're shotgunning the whole game in one sitting (like my first playthrough) they do break up the pacing in a way that feels frustrating.

You probably noticed this, but if you stand near a lit lantern it'll put a glow on the edge of the screen to lead you to the next musician. I didn't mind them so much because I enjoyed the music, but I could understand not enjoying that platforming when you just want to see what happens next.

Oh I actually didn't realize that glow thing, thanks. I started playing this again after a two or three week lull for some reason, and that was the only thing that stuck out at me as annoying. I can't say I grew up in a small dying town but this game definitely takes me back to my late teens. Having said that, I definitely feel pretty "how do you do, fellow kids?" when I talk about this with anyone :q:

But I love the presentation and the gameplay is really enjoyable despite its simplicity. This is the first game which isn't a shooter that I've actually been drawn into enough to keep playing in .. probably four or five years.

I have 17.5 hours for two playthroughs. Between the two playthroughs I did most of the optional content once (eg the dusk stars in the first playthrough, the miracle rats in the second), so it definitely depends if you're picking and choosing which optional content to do during the day vs going for everything (In my first playthrough I missed how to get to the rooftops on several screens, also).

I didn't see anyone else confirming this, so:

This is definitely just a bug. It happens if you jump off at the end, and then hold left so that Mae is underneath the fire escape when she falls out of frame. There must be some kind of error-handling logic that just puts you back at the start of the scene if you get Mae to a location where she shouldn't be. If you let her fall straight down, or go to the right, the scene ends normally.

I encountered a similar bug after I somehow ran under a pier in one of the dreams.

Repeatedly jumping while standing beside one makes it launch a helicopter thing. Any that you launch before going to Possum Jump are discovered by Mae and Angus.
