I meant alloy rims, but I suppose as long as they're not Chinese knockoffs, I they should be similar to steelies

Yeah fair enough. I probably wouldn't put alloys under a car to support the weight because they would probably crack easier, but if you had to work on one in a pinch, it's better than just a jack.

THIS IS WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU LET YOUR BEER FREEZE, DAMNIT
They don't put it in manuals anymore because the "proper" way to do it is with either wood blocks or rated jack stands. If someone were to get hurt because a lovely Chinese alloy wheel cracked, then whoever wrote down that that was acceptable could be held liable. That being said, anything is better than nothing.

Personally, as long as that one guy is directly under the front wheel like that, it's probably safe enough for everyone else.

Probably. I had a widowmaker drop my car on a (full sized steelie) spare, and it was fine. Always put your tire under there and never put yourself under.
It never actually hit the rim, just the tire, but this wasn't exactly a lowprofile tire.

I Want To Believe.
Putting a wheel under the car is simply a last-ditch safety method for when everything else fails. It probably won't do serious damage to the wheel, but even if it did, its job is to prevent the car dropping all the way and killing you. It's the bit of the floorpan that lands on the wheel that's likely to get damaged from the impact, to be honest.

I'd always do it if changing a wheel using a crap factory widowmaker type jack, or if stuck doing an emergency repair with nothing else to help.

In my experience thats 99% of all spares, since people never bother even checking the pressure in them until they're stranded out in bumfuck nowhere with a flat spare. Buying a new one when they buy new tyres, HA!

Shoot, I can pick from 3 flavors of ethanol at my gas station beyond the standard 10%. In Iowa I've never seen any ethanol-free fuel because that's akin to treason around here.

E85 is relatively easy to find here, but I've never seen E70. The new Murphy USA by my apartment has 3 hoses at the pump - one for the typical 3 grades of gasoline (which have up to 10% ethanol), one for E15 (yes, 15, not 85), and one for diesel.

The E15 there typically runs 20-30c/gallon cheaper than regular, and it's the only station I've ever seen it at (also I see zero difference in power or MPG when I run it in my car). E85 seems to follow the price of normal gasoline pretty closely.

Kwiktrip in Wisconsin has relatively legit food, they try to be a grocery store almost as much as they are a gas station.

Quiktrip (based in Oklahoma, mostly found in DFW, Tulsa, Atlanta, and Phoenix) has pretty decent food too. They've been remodeling older stores to add a small kitchen where you can order pizza, sandwiches, etc, and their hot dogs have always been pretty good. Their newer stores have the kitchens when built.

Their pizza is surprisingly decent.

We have a large number of gas stations with Subway's built in. The Lassus chain has Elmo's Pizza and Subs in almost every location and their food isn't terrible. And in a brilliant stroke the largest Shell franchise just inked a deal to bring Little Caesars Hot n Ready into every one of their locations.

LoL, brilliant.

There are a few Shell services stations here in Aus that have Hungry Jacks (our version of Burger King) built in, which isn't too bad for greasy road-trip food. And there's a 7-11 service station near me with a Domino's Pizza attached to it, which I assume is food of some sort but I've never eaten Domino's so I wouldn't know.

But Starbucks doesn't franchise. They'll sometimes do a license thing for airports and grocery stores, but they still retain ownership and most control over day to day operations.

Subway profits for individual stores are laughably terrible. They generally turn a profit, but it's really not much. Quiznos is even worse; DFW is down to less than a dozen locations, down from 40 or 50, and their wikipedia page claims up to 40% of stores operate at a loss.

One of my high school buddies currently owns a small empire of gas stations. About two years back they brought Subway into one of their more isolated locations, the first Subway in that town to boot. To hear him talk about it he regrets nothing more than that as his slide into the red gets bigger every quarter.

Yeah... the Shell down the street used to have a Subway inside it. The subway has been closed for a couple of years, but still shows up on Google Maps if you search for Subway.

I'm guessing the owner of the gas station owned it - all of the equipment was still there (including the $$$$$$$$$$$$ combination microwave/convection oven) up until a couple of months ago. They started tearing it out recently, owner told me he finally got the space leased out to someone to run a taco shop.

I don't see the taco place lasting long to be honest. It seems to be a very slow DIY renovation, and while it's on a busy highway (I-30), it's off of an exit that nobody uses unless they live around here. I'm on the outskirts of town, and the only things near there (outside of old apartments) are a 7-11, EZ Mart, Jack in the Box, and a Golden Chick. Every other business you'd want to get to from that exit was in a little strip mall that got destroyed in a tornado less than a year and a half ago.

Ugh, gas station subways are so terrible. I always see them at far-out remote stations when I'm fueling up after a backroads trip through the California desert. If you're hungry and out of food your options are: eat desert subway | buy a tiny $10 bag of beef jerky and a $3 water | continue ~45 miles to the in-n-out next to the indian casino. I am always briefly tempted by the thought of fresh vegetables dripping with oil and vinegar; then I walk by and look at the crusty tuna bin next to the wilted cucumber slices and realize men have made it across the desert without food before.

Scores at this time:
  • Desert Subway: 0
  • $10 Beef Jerky: 1
  • Reservation In-N-Out: spinning_counter.gif

Huh, that's weird, even google news doesn't display the $210 million lawsuit filed over the report in the first 3 categories for "canada subway chicken". It's only the reporting on the story, and then just subway denying the allegations, and then the original story, then the massive lawsuit.

http://nypost.com/2017/03/16/subway-sues-tv-network-over-soy-chicken-allegations/

The lab that performed the tests hasn't commented and the original story hasn't been retracted, as of last week anyway. I'm willing to chock it up to lovely franchisees ruining a perfectly subpar sandwich shop. I wouldn't order meat in a subway to begin with, but due to the original report, I'm free to disseminate possibly libelous statements about a crappy fast food chain as though they were verified facts
