its funny that for all the bitching about the coyotes that goes on here and on other forums, the diamondbacks managed to bring in 14k in a 50k stadium last year and supposedly we're on their side for a new ballpark

I get your point but to be a little fair that was a 4th of july weekend game against the equally junk Padres. I cannot imagine the desire to go to that game was very high.

Going to baseball games is more about just having fun and not so much who's playing or how good the game is (imo, but that certainly can make it better) but the last part is a fair point :shobon:

Plus holiday weekend games like that are always a toss-up. Baseball games seem either completely packed for them or almost totally empty, depending on the area.

I'm not going to look it up but it's probably the afternoon game after the big fireworks show so sure, attendance is going to be down, but the coyotes arena was more full going to see florida on a monday night than that game was

Well yeah but Gila River Arena only seats like 18,500. Chase Field's just under 50k if memory serves.

14,000 asses in seats in the first is going to look a lot better than 14,000 asses in the latter.

Landover is like the worst possible location for a football stadium in the DC area. They may as well have built it in West Virginia.

it's barely accessible by public transportation, to point where it's not even worth it to try and ride the metro out there, which means that everyone has to drive in and it takes hours to park or leave. And to top it off the Redskins loving suck at football.

I've been there for concerts before and even that is terrible despite being like 20% as many people as you'd get for a game.

Their attendance is crap so the only way to get attendance up is to build a new stadium, you see.

FedEx was designed to be inaccessible so the team could gouge fans parking out there, but now they see that's not a great idea. Even in isolation the stadium is hot trash, too. Who is going to trek out there for eight games of that walking disaster?

Think that's their preferred alignment, though there are tons of politics involved in that (not the least of which is the team name). Northern Virginia is another possibility, since their fanbase is increasingly centered there.

I'm not even joking as of today they (AEG & OAG) are literally touting the loving Monorail as a viable transit option which would instantly make it a double transfer for everyone getting to/from games in a place that has historically had garbage traffic and public transpo.

The fact that the city is even considering the Key shows me that none of them have ever been near Seattle Center when a Sonics game gets out. Total gridlock, and that was before Amazon moved between the Key and I-5.

And to tout the goddamn monorail as a partial solution? The Alaskan Way Viaduct would be more effective and it's half demolished.

It would be like San Francisco citing the cable car as a regular way to leave Giants games.

If they build the next one over at National Harbor, I'm going to piss fire and rage. Maryland's side of the river is ugly as hell. Why does the casino need a video screen so massive I can see what's on it from my side of the river?

They had a good 6 month run of being the only major pro team in town. Hope the Creator gets used to being a small byline in the sports section, like most other NHL teams get in multi sport cities.

On a good note I was in Vegas 2 weeks ago and picked up a Golden Knights hat on the strip. The logo looks way better in person with the gold thread then it does online. Really pops and embodies the money aspect of Vegas. Also when I was getting the hat two guys walked up next to me and had this exchange.

Dude 1: "Golden Knights?"
Dude 2: "Oh I think it's a local sports team or something."
Dude 1 sees shirt that says Vegas Hockey.
Dude 1: "Hockey here? Heh"

Ya, good luck with fans now that the NFL is moving in. I still think they'll do well since they have MGM backing the venue.

The talk about streetcars was interesting. For record, here's the variant of that where I live.

Trams/Streetcars are great at a similar job to busses. Larger-capacity light rail or just a standard metro rail setup is better at moving large numbers of people in a shorter time, but I am enjoying all the "gently caress IT LETS BUILD TRAMS" things that are going on right now.

If Quebec didn't get a team because "it's a market with no discernible value to the NHL", Hamilton isn't going to get it either.

Bettman is desperate for Kansas, Houston and Seattle.

I'm fine with Seattle but I wish he'd realize that teams in the southern U.S. draw poorly already. Tampa drew well this year but they couldn't get people to watch them to win the Cup without giving away a lot of tickets. The teams in the bottom 10 of attendance have 6 teams in the southern U.S., 2 Canadian teams (one of whom is playing very poorly), the Blue Jackets, and a couple teams in the NY/NJ area. I'm not saying this league needs to be EXCLUSIVELY CANADIAN or some nonsense, but maybe stop trying to appeal to areas that have a dozen sports franchises already. And in Kansas' case, they already lost a team and had the worst winning pct in modern NHL history (.241). Is anybody in KC REALLY clamoring for a KC team?

I wish KC had the worst team of all time, but look at the 74-75 Capitals. Luckily I think the NHL has learned a little bit and won't let an expansion team ever be that bad again (8-67-5 .131 win%). Is KC even interested in having a NHL team now? I thought I read that their arena made more money on concerts than they would with a full time tenant.

I'd forgotten about the legendarily poo poo Caps team. Still, I feel like the best candidates for expansion are Hamilton, Seattle, Quebec City, Milwaukee (Wisconsin loving loves hockey, as much as Minnesota does I'd say), and this might seem odd, but Omaha. Population of close to 500,000, and their NCAA team is one of the best attended teams in the NCAA.
