Why isn't there a French politics thread? I enjoy reading about the upcoming election, but it seems as if there's enough interest for a genuine France thread here. And even if nothing happens, you can have regional slapfights like Bretons vs Parisians or whatever, like we do in the German politics thread. (Southern Germans are scum :cheeky:) Or talk about the best French food etc.

Jews fleeing the Holocaust are not in any way comparable to North Africans, who don't flee genocide but want to enjoy the social welfare systems of Northern Europe.
I just realized that Emmanuel Macron and his party have the same initials.

Funny.

Seems like Scotland voted for another chance to leave UK.

I'd be surprised if it doesn't pass this time. I was really surprised it didn't pass the first time around, as every single Scot i've talked to wants out.

Not quite. Scotland's parliament has voted to support a motion ask the UK parliament for legislation allowing another referendum.

I'm surprised that your surprise last time didn't lead to you considering that your sampling may not reflect broader public opinion.

Deliberate. It's a marketing trick. Macron is all marketing with no actual political ideas. You'd like him.

The last referendum was fairly close (55.3% to 44.7%), and a not insignificant portion of stay voters voted that way because they didn't want to lose access to the EU shared market.

Over 60% of Scots voted against brexit, so I think they have a right to feel like they've been victims of a bait and switch.

And a third of Scottish Nationalists voted to leave the EU.

However this is a conversation best suited to the Scotpol thread. Grab a flag and join us there.

In the event that Fillon wins the presidential election, Valls is ready to "find some common ground with the right". Whatever it takes to get a cabinet portfolio.
Pierre Laval would be proud to see that thirst for power regardless of the consequences still lives well on the "left" wing.

One part of me hope Valls endorsing Macron is part of some ultra deep strategy, making Macron loose votes because people hate Valls, and making Hamon even more isolated so he drops out in favor of Mélanchon.

But then I remember those fuckers only care about their comfy seats and would sell their soul to the devil if it meant one more mandate.
