The SG9665GC comes with 3M VHB tape for the mounts which looks like it's somewhat more temperature resistant than 3M Extreme.

I haven't had VHB fail me yet, but I can't recall if I switched to the VHB mount either before or after last summer.

Should I care about having accurate time and date stamps on my videos? Should I use the stamps at all?

FBS posted:Should I care about having accurate time and date stamps on my videos? Should I use the stamps at all? How much effort is it to get accurate stamps with your device? Hardware‐wise, it’s trivial to run a quartz clock off a CR2032 for a decade. Or if the thing has a GPS chip, it can get the time from that for free. If it’s hard to get accurate dates on your camera, the manufacturer cheaped out. Platystemon fucked around with this message at 04:45 on Mar 22, 2017 |

Platystemon posted:How much effort is it to get accurate stamps with your device? I bought a cheapo G1W capacitor model so at this point I'm not sure how reliable the time setting will be. I ran the power cable tonight from the center console under the door weather stripping and under the edge of the headliner, which was surprisingly easy. Now, my power outlet is always on regardless of the ignition, so at this point I'm wondering if 1) I'll remember to turn the thing on/off manually when I get in and out of the car and 2) if it's capable of draining my battery in a day or two. I can't wait to find out!

I would expect it to take more like a week to kill a healthy battery, but doing it repeatedly wouldn’t be great for the battery.

I have some mid-level Chinese cam that is always on or off too. The thing eventually killed my battery when I tried just leaving it plugged in. I don't remember how long it took, but it wasn't as long as I expected, though it could have just been a bad battery to start with.

The Locator posted:You car appears to pull pretty hard to the right on full braking. The road is somewhat off camber through that intersection, more than what's obvious from the video. I think I lock the brakes up at the end there and the front of the car is just sliding sideways down the hill, as soon as I let up it goes back on course. Since the front is sliding to the right, the back of the car is going to try and pass the front of the car, especially with weight transfer forward, so the back is probably sliding out as well, adding to my direction change. Due to the fact that I don't have ABS I was pulsing the brakes pretty hard throughout that stop, but looks like I got a bit aggressive on the pedal toward the end. If I'm driving down a flat road and stomp on the brakes (not hard enough to lock them) it brakes perfectly straight. EDIT: It also looks like I may have actually steered to the right, obviously it's a case where steering left would be better to go around the back of the car, but it was drilled into my head in commercial driving school NEVER STEER LEFT TO AVOID AN ACCIDENT. You can cause a head-on collision on the other side of the road. Flying planes and driving boats (my two other forms of transportation), collision avoidance is also generally "steer right", so it's sort of programmed into me. chrisgt fucked around with this message at 23:11 on Mar 22, 2017 |

Saw a crash this morning - car straight up Duke Boys-ed off the road, across the grass verge, and sploosh into a pond without slowing down. I stopped, called 911, and checked my dashcam was on. When I got chance to pull the footage I discovered the front cam has slowly slipped from how I set it on installation, so it was angled to point up at the sky and missed everything. Rear cam was good, but nothing happened out the back. The ball-knuckle adjusting thing for the front cam was fully tight but still it slipped - how do I fix that? Solvent weld it so it's no longer an adjustable adjusting thing? ChickenOfTomorrow fucked around with this message at 18:39 on Mar 24, 2017 |

I actually bought the first one just a few weeks ago, and the other one in 2105! The $69 one has been a trooper in my bus, in Phoenix, since install August 2015. The $59 one seems okay so far. I put it in the Crown Vic, and it looks and feels identical. I wanted to test it out.

Can I just hack that off and get one of those 12v-->5v converters The cigarette lighter plug will likely have a 12v->5v circuit board in it already, you can use those guts and wire to the fuse tap. Crack the plug case open with an x-acto knife, find the wires heading from the circuit board to the contacts on the male end of the plug, then solder some new wires onto those to extend them. Solder the + wire to the fuse tap and the negative to a ring terminal to ground to a screw or bolt on the chassis. Shrink wrap or tape the bare solder points, snap the plug case back together to hold the circuit board, and wrap with electrical tape to keep it shut. Bing bang boom.

Thanks for the heads up on this. i ended up buying a separate 90 degree usb cable with a 12-->5v converter built in. And some fuse taps. Looks like my accord has a passenger side fuse panel so that'll make this even easier.

I snagged a couple today. A particularly egregious red light runner: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGqSM9xrFBY There's nothing quite like rounding a blind corner to find a young family (including a baby!) in the middle of the road: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JjkbDALooFo And just a quick PSA: These videos also made me realize I needed to adjust my camera upwards. It was focusing on the dash, and having a big black dash in view throws off my white balance. Be sure to take a look at your video to make sure your camera's pointing in the right direction people!

Had to reformat my SD card and lost the video, but as I was driving down a dark 4-lane street one night I saw a woman standing right on the median. I wasn't a great part of town so I figured it was just some crazy lady and prepared to nudge over and pass her, then my headlights caught her motioning her young child out into traffic with her. Luckily cars both ways were able to stop so they could get across, but when she got the horn she looked at me as if I was the crazy one <>
